TERRACE INDUSTRY: M SQUARED BOX 1980-1983ASCENSION RECORDSFormat: 4xCDs Cata No: ANCD036 Barcode: 705105693248 |
An outstanding compile, that truly encapsulates an insurgent scene from 30 plus years ago, in Sydney, Australia: With the assistance of Ascension Records, M Squared have revisited their catalogue to compile their favourites into Terrace Industry an M Squared box set of 81 tracks over 4 CDs. Originally released on vinyl or cassette by the M Squared label between 1980 and 1983 the majority of these tracks now appear on CD for the very first time. This completely remastered 30-year anniversary set includes tracks from Systematics, The Makers of The Dead Travel Fast, Scattered Order, Ya Ya Choral, A Cloakroom Assembly, Patrick Gibson, Prod, Pel Mel, Wild West, SoliPsiK, The Limp, Tame O'Mearas, Severed Heads, Height/Dismay, Belle du Soir, The Slugfuckers, The Same, Splendid Mess, Pleasant Peasants and The Barons. The Dru Jones designed box also contains a 36 page booklet with label history, recollections from the bands involved and previously unpublished photos, plus a set of commemorative drink coasters. Almost all the material that comprises the box set makes it's first appearance on CD, two tracks being completely unreleased. Newly transferred & mastered all of the material is sounding better than it ever has! About M SQUARED Operating in Sydney, Australia from 1980 to 1983, the M Squared label was founded by Mitch Jones and Michael Tee of seminal noisemaking band Scattered Order. Joined by The Systematics' Patrick Gibson in their tiny recording studio, the trio steered the label through 24 vinyl and seven cassette releases in a brief burst of creative hyperactivity. The prevailing idea behind M Squared was that creating music was possible even with limited equipment and training, and the studio was in constant use as a testing ground for that theory, especially as the M Squared personnel became involved in many small side projects. As a consequence, the label's ability to release the subsequent torrent of material was stretched to the limit. One solution was split cassette releases in editions of 100 or less, but many more tracks remained unreleased and in some cases completely forgotten. At the time M Squared was in operation, press reaction to the label's catalogue ran the gamut from outraged to ecstatic, with a good dollop of complete incomprehension somewhere in the middle. There's probably no doubt that the unreleased material would have provoked similar reactions. But with hindsight this previously 'almost lost' music slots perfectly into what is now a better understood, and much less maligned, strand of experimental music. For Fans of 4AD, Industrial Music, early Mute, etc... * * Purchasing all the original releases that feature on this box set would either mean a serious dent in your bank balance, or an appointment with your bank manager. * Extremely plush packaging: each CD in individual full colour card sleeve, 36 page booklet, and commemorative M Squared drink coasters all housed in sturdy, full colour ?clam shell? style box. | |
