This collaboration between the mellow, Memphis-meets- Germany duo of Kip Ulhorn and Simon Wojan (a.k.a. Cloudland Canyon) and Chicago's great rock 'n' roll concierge and knower-of-mystics Mr. Robert Lowe (a.k.a. Lichens) was born on a trip to the West Coast of the United States a few years ago. Exterminating Angel's single 30-minute track (split into two parts on the LP version) uses voice, guitar, samplers, and ARP synthesizer. You've heard of the unmade science fiction epic whose would-be director proposed using different big-name progressive bands to perform a soundtrack for specific planets used in the script; here then are the sounds accompanying a spacecraft that's a combination Death Star and Taco Bell from the 1970s filled with cement Mayan temples and pyramids populated by large, snappily dressed reptilian beings. Every so often a bell goes off to break the spell and presents convincing evidence of this record's special journey. Now getting a vinyl release.

Mt Pollard's brand new label offers up Robert Pollard's newest solo material. Pollard amicably departed Merge Records after four albums in two years, and this will be his only proper "Robert Pollard" full-length for 2008. With ten songs in 35 minutes, it's an extraordinary rock tour-de-force. Robert Pollard Is Off To Business sports Todd Tobias's cleanest and meanest production yet, giant songs and riffs that pack a wallop, and arguably Pollard's finest singing ever captured on record. For Pollard, whose albums normally run 15-25 songs, this ten-song work is a departure from form. Since freeing himself of a band in 2004, his albums have each had very distinct and varied flavors, and his creativity has flowered. "Weatherman and Skin Goddess" takes the listener back to a time when Rock Radio ruled!!Album's release coincides with Fantagraphics' Town Of Mirrors : The Reassembled Imagery of Robert Pollard, a lavish coffee-table book retrospective of Pollard's collage art and lyrics, as well as several Pollard art exhibits! Super deluxe (and very limited) heavy vinyl version too!

FABULOUS DIAMONDS - 'S/T'

Formats
  • SB89 - LP

Details

Adorably known to friends and family in Australia as Jarrod and Nisa, The Fabulous Diamonds' beguiling truck is a mesmerizing mix of synth, dub, and percussion, woven around honey-ache vocal stylings recalling (in spirit) past Aussie noisemakers Scattered Order or Makers Of The Dead Travel Fast, as well as those of Augustus Pablo, Young Marble Giants, and Suicide. Their one previous release was a 7-inch co-released by Nervous Jerk and Misteltone, and it garnered praise from the Blogosphere and a smattering of airplay on discerning freeform radio stations around the US. This LP on Siltbreeze has been in the works for the better part of a year; its release coincides their first American tour (along with Siltbreeze labelmates, Psychedelic Horseshit). "Borne out of a tradition that lies somewhere between classic dub, experimentalism and post punk, Fabulous Diamonds foreground a style (unique) and substance (intriguing) that come together in a hypnotic frenzy. Assembled amidst high levels of delay, this Melbourne two-piece creates a truly bewildering mix.... It's the hit you've been waiting for throughout this post post-punk m?l?e we live in. Fabulous Diamonds present a world drenched in discordant jams stemming from a parallel universe of sonic intensity, one that picks up on the heritage embedded in post-punk, but recreates rather than rehashes the influence." -Eliza Sarlos, Mess + Noise

WOODEN SHJIPS - 'VOL. 1'

A collection of long deleted vinyl only sides from San Francisco's Wooden Shjips, playing debut UK shows next week at ATP and in London, very much a hot tip! The Wooden Shjips' earliest material was released on vinyl, pressed in small quantities that were either free or hard to come by and are now hopelessly out of print. Who are we to keep you away from the rush of "Shrinking Moon for You"? Vol. 1 collects all the tracks from the free 10-inch, the Dance, California 7-inch, and the SOL 7-inch. The band will be out playing live, in their own nimble way, this spring and summer, road-testing new material for their next record. "... [T]ight-wound repeato psych guitar raunch with spoony (maybe even imaginary) percussion, surprisingly Rev-like keys, and vocals buried under burning driftwood. It's a nice one." -Byron Coley, Wire "... Wooden Shjips seem to have their wagon hitched to a post psychedelic/ punk damaged Krautrock environ that just not enough people are astute enough to homestead." -Tom Lax, Siltblog "Like fellow locals Comets on Fire or English space rockers Hawkwind or Spaceman 3, Wooden Shjips' magic is created by a mix of pummeling hypnotic grooves and otherworldly guitar that sounds like Hendrix strung out in a methadone clinic." -Andy Tennille, HARP "'Dance, California' locks onto a three-note, twangy, nuclear beach groove and hangs out there for the duration, guitar slashery (in the single-note sweepstakes for a good long while) shooting over the top like artillery fire. On the other side, an atmospheric, slow drone and steady pulse frame blistery lead and what's that, vocals? Oh, so nice, and sounding more like the new incarnation of F/i with each listen." -Doug Mosurak, Dusted "... [T]he band have locked it in and sound like they are never gonna stop. A looped cyclical minimal fuzzrock jam that sounds almost like some crazy crossbreeding of the Doors and Spacemen 3, which should appeal to Circle, Salvatore, and Magyar Posse fans as much as all the druggy psychrock dronesters out there." -Aquarius Records:
