Formats
  • NTNF006 - CD

Details

New label for this release (same barcode etc), the incredible debut from (now) philly based a sunny day in glasgow; already causing a minor stir in the us on blogs and websites (8/10 on pitchfork)now beginning to filter over to the uk, (9/10 on drowned in sound last week): using mandolins, samplers, banjos, noise, lots of cuttin and pastin and all of the normal band instruments, asdig adds lush female vocals and dance-y rhythms to make dreamy pop music. the album succeeds in marrying cocteau twin's otherworldliness, jamc white noise bliss, the best aspects of aphex twin, and the jangle of "strawberry wine" era my bloody valentine to create a sublime pop music. for fans of early 90's creation records, Sonic Cathedral, Deerhunter, Cocteaus, slowdive, seefeel, my bloody valentine, even panda bear or 65daysofstatic. highly recommended! On tour in UK at end of July, one of the best records of the past 12 months.

BATTLE OF LAND AND SEA - 'S/T'

Formats
  • NTNF008 - CD
    751937319429
Details

Now on new label imprint (same barcode!) a stunning debut: to describe the sound of the battle of land and sea, one might call up images of abandoned sea-worn ships floating through a thick coastal fog. and upon first listen you might call to mind cat power, or the soft glow of songs of green pheasant. but eventually, you start to hear what makes the music of portland based sarah o'shura so special. you get a glimpse of a world through the eyes of a someone on a musical pilgrimage, whether the tales are laden with sorrow or joy, they are enchanting and hopeful. growing up in a remote northern californian town as an only child definitely left its stamp on sarah's imagination. six of the eight tracks on this debut full-length stem from a hand sewn ep the band self-released in early 2007 and revisited for this release. jacob golden produced the album at his home studio in the summer of 2006 and spring of 2007, seasoning the home spun vibe and intimate songs perfectly. mixing took place in both london and silverlake, lending some cross atlantic perspective, which makes sense considering the seafaring thread. for fans of isobel campbell, marissa nadler, cat power etc. highly recommended

EAT SKULL - 'SICK TO DEATH'

NOW GETTING A CD RELEASE!!!!! This will scour yr ears! if you find the MBV remasters a tad MOR, then strap this on for some real FUZZ / SCUZZ! Leave it to the NME to embellish a term like "shit-gaze" and in doing so codify the current DIY threadbare scrape of Times New Viking, Psychedelic Horseshit, and Tyvek. No surprise that the greatest shit-gazer of all time was none other than Samuel Coleridge, an avowed Brit who, plied full of laudanum, would sit for hours and stare at his bowel movements, writing copious notes on their color, texture, etc. "Monday? Oh, stool journal, to where didst thine weekend go?" At any rate, it's hard to gauge how much mileage the eNeMEy can get with such a phrase, but cross your fingers it hangs around long enough for Eat Skull to share in the odorous mirth. Call their genre whatever you want; Eat Skull will be ensconced in the stately pleasure-dome at Xanadu, waiting for the checks to clear. Biscuit crumbs and tea stains be damned, Eat Skull are a quartet hailing from Portland, Oregon, co-masterminded by Rob Enbom (former bushwacker in the ranks of Hospitals and Hole Class) and another original Hospital, Rod Meyer (the greatest living genius of punk). Previous Eat Skull efforts include a cassette- only EP and a pair of 7-inches, all of which might be out of print. Like their brethren and forebears, Eat Skull runs a post pattern deep beyond pop and punk. They bring to the game an extrasensory appreciation of New Zealand's South Island Sound (Great Unwashed, Axemen), Cleveland art-damage skronk (Modern Art Studio, X-X), and the wretched excess of forgotten Midwest hardcore (Stiff Legged Sheep, Chemotherapy). In other words, just what you need! Pip, pip matey, rum, sodomy, chin up and all that. Sick to Death is sure to be a lock for many year-end bests or Tom Lax's (DJ) name isn't Kublai Khan. 800 copies, vinyl only.

PUMICE - 'QUO'

Formats
  • SAB029 - CD
    656605858128
Details

As the title self-effacingly implies, Quo proffers a triumphant, primo slice of past Pumiceisms: uncertain progressions, anomalous structure, inimitable guitar buzz, sublime melancholy & distorted vocals (crooned, spoken & moaned). Quo once more finds Pumice cruising the convergence of pop, folk & noise strains with bona fide inner mystique. Sputtering sub-underground skiffle aims for outer zones, diamond cuts of nervous guitar with pesky hooks that sting & tickle tread rough hewn punk turf, pop tangents charm with echoes of the Kilgours or Chris Knox, and woozy synth blurts & drones thread the patchwork patterns with Hulk-like grace.

DAMON & NAOMI - 'MORE SAD HITS'

Formats
  • 20202006 - LP
    600197100714
  • 20202006CD - CD

Details

Damon & Naomi present the reissue of their first album, More Sad Hits, on their own 20|20|20 label, which just last year released the band's latest album, Within These Walls. Created as a swan song response to the dissolution of Galaxie 500, More Sad Hits was recorded with Galaxie producer Mark Kramer, and is just as cutting a reaction to the sinister allure of fame as it was when released back in 1992. The album was so strong, that a presumed one-off led to a long relationship with Sub Pop Records, who offered to put out future releases after hearing what the duo could accomplish on their own. Damon & Naomi originally released More Sad Hits on Shimmy Disc one year after the breakup of Galaxie 500, when Dean Wareham left the group to pursue a career with Luna on Elektra Records. With no intention of doing any more recording, the duo were nonetheless convinced to go into the studio after Kramer told them he'd assist with both recording and release. While Damon & Naomi have remained publicly silent regarding Wareham's recent autobiography, this album serves as all the answers anyone needs concerning their side of the drama. And with a shimmering and lonely beauty as only they can achieve, the two made a series of songs as emotionally stark as you're likely to hear. It was recently voted one of the "Top Twenty Most Overlooked Psychedelic Albums" along with Skip Spence and 13th Floor Elevators. This remastered reissue will contain new liner notes and photos. In advance of the release, Damon & Naomi will be touring the states for a serious of special shows with Masaki Batoh and Helena Espvall, including a show at Terrastock.

AUFGEHOBEN - 'KHORA'

Formats
  • HOLY196180 - CD
    655035618029
Details

Khora is the fifth full-length by Aufgehoben. Since the release of their previous album, Messidor, the group has somewhat relaxed their strict commitment to anonymity by allowing their names to be known and photos to be taken, and even playing a few well-received live shows. Messidor may have been mellower, but the progression displayed on Khora leads one to believe that full-on rock may be in the cards for this group, who have seemingly removed the elbow patches from their jackets and rolled up their sleeves for good. The album begins with three short pieces, sonic examples of texture meeting metal-like a djinn trapped in molten gold, attempting to burst free from his cage but only managing to express rage via infinie temporary sculptures ranging from the nightmares of the M?tter Museum to futuristic expressions of nature not yet captured by a conscious eye. The final track is 28 minutes of pure glory that will surely become one of noise rock's classics. Massively blown-out and beautifully recorded, "Jederfursich" lays down twin mirrors side by side as a model of infinity is allowed to morph through sounds that recall the energy of existence and the sand of time itself.
