CRYSTAL STILTS - 'S/T'

Details

CRYSTAL STILTS started in Brooklyn in 2003 as BRAD HARGETT and JB TOWNSEND. Not really trying to be a "band" they recorded and self-released their single Shattered Shine on their Feathery Tongue label in '04 with friend SEAN MAFUCCI (producer of Gang Gang Dance, Psychic Ills, Kid Congo Powers etc.) Early on the Stilts played randomly in NYC opening for acts like Blood on the Wall, The Broke Revue, Cause Co-motion, and Psychic Ills. With no shortage of lazy Jesus and Mary Chain and Factory records comparisons, (more like VU, Felt, and Blue Orchids) in 2005-06 they continued to play in New York with bands such as the Long Blondes, 1990s and The Monochrome Set and recorded a 4 song EP. KYLE FORRESTER (LADYBUG TRANSISTOR) joined them at gigs playing organ as well. After a brief hiatus to record their back catalogue for upcoming LP (Slumberland) they adopted ANDY ADLER who played bass on Eric Copeland of Black Dice fuzzpop outfit Ninjas) to rock the bass. After opening for the Clean in November, FRANKIE ROSE (VIVIAN GIRLS) waltzed into their life to play the stand-up drums and complete the equation. Compiles their self-titled 12-inch and the Shattered Shine 7-inch. Six tracks. Theres a full length due soon on Slumberland, and apparently some UK dates. Keep em peeled...

BIG PINK, THE - 'TOO YOUNG TO LOVE / CRYSTAL VISIONS'

Formats
  • HA001 - 7"

Details

The Big Pink are Londoners Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell, two lifelong friends whose home studio experiments have bore some of the most inspiring British music of 2008. TOO YOUNG TO LOVE / CRYSTAL VISIONS is their debut single, a sublime pair of tracks which will only be available as a deluxe seven inch limited to 500 copies. It will be the first release by London based vinyl only independent label House Anxiety. Entirely characteristic of The Big Pink's unique furrow, the hope-filled darkness of Too Young To Love points to both the digital hardcore and art-rock undergrounds, while Robbie's trademark soaring vocal melodies and densely encompassing reverberation complete their entrancing formula. The stately drone and overdriven trebly crescendo of Crystal Visions nods to such sonic reference points as the shoe-gaze of My Bloody Valentine and brooding minimalism of Earth, but the track's chiming chorus and tender melodic nuance allow it a fragile beauty of its very own. While all song writing and creative control remains in Milo and Robbie's able hands, The Big Pink's rapidly growing reputation as an essential live act has been ensured by the onstage collaboration of periphery members such as Daniel O'Sullivan from Guapo and Sunn0))), electronic artiste Jo Apps from the Planet Mu label, drummer Akiko Matsuura of Pre and Comanechi, and Al O'Connell producer/engineer for the likes of The Rapture and Klaxons. Will sell out on presale!

VIVIAN GIRLS - 'TELL THE WORLD'

Formats

Details

Will be in stock this week: last copies of this killer single on WOODSIST, from one of the hottest bands around (well from NY) right now. UK tour in December, album in october, press going bananas...stock up:"So what's the big deal? Well, this trio (CASSIE, KATY and FRANIKIE) sound like Electrelane and Scottish pop C86 heroes the Shop Assistants fluttering about and jamming Saints covers on a fluffy cloud in heaven. "Tell the World" is uncomplicated, bounce-around pop, steeped in reverb and the spirit of punk (the low-end sounds Cramps-like), and recorded smile-free-which isn't necessarily characteristic of the band."-Exclaim Magazine.

PINK REASON - 'WINONA'

Formats
  • WOODSIST014 - 7"

Details

We've not had this before, but its on Woodsist, so its worth checking...if its anywhere near as good as the SiltBreeze blastings..then....you will probably need this. During a show with hardcore punks Hatefuck, DeBroux and company traveled to Winona, Minnesota. After a five-hour drive to the town, wasted locals, angry punks and gnarled three-legged dogs greeted them by leading them into a commandeered park. Inside the park, DeBroux found "the ultimate punk rock experience" with townies huffing rubber glue and mohawk-brandishing kids starting fights with crusties. The show ended and the locals gave the band three dollars for their troubles. A few kids asked DeBroux and company to chip in the three dollars on a keg. Soon, the crowd dispersed and left the band with no money or place to stay. The band wound up sleeping on an island between Minnesota and Wisconsin and breaking up soon thereafter. He wrote the first Pink Reason song, "Winona," about this experience."-Steve Kobak (Blastitude #25)
