SUN ARAW - 'BOAT TRIP'

Formats
  • WOODSIST018 - LP
    N/A
Details

Boat Trip might be some hidden soundtrack to Donkey Kong, warp-whistling straight into Ayahuasca Country. In about twenty minutes, Sun Araw manages to navigate a psychedelic jungle cruise through canopy din & spooked drone, then he noses the boat out of the water and lifts into uncharted dub-spheres. The back half of this entranced tour is like being (fortunately) trapped inside an old Upsetters jam played at half-speed with twice the shaman-chant and reverb-drenched percussion. Normally we wouldn't trust taking this kind of trip with just anybody, but with wheel and rudder alike in the hands of Magic Lantern co-captain Cameron Stallones, we can sip our yage-of-choice in peace and share the Sun Araw vision as one. Limited to 500 on black vinyl. Believe us on this one, this and the 12" on NNF could be the hot new shit...like the Beach Boys on some really bad downers, or Panda Bear with proper distorto vision...limited as all hell. Dont miss out now and weep wehn these are 50 plus on ericbay.

CAR COMMERCIALS - 'ERIC'S DIARY'

Formats
  • SAB30 - LP
    N/A
Details

Car Commericals are generally uncomfortable; probably shifty-eyed loners that barely leave the basement. Their brand of strictly personal suburban ooze was borne deep within the recesses of New Jersey, just east of I-95. More specifically, this music springs from inside that unspeakable zone deep within the mind where feelings get very messy. Eric's Diary is the second LP release from Car Commericals, following the out-of-print Judy's Dust LP (Cenotaph) from early 2008. Those confounded by Judy's Dust will be pleased to know that Eric's Diary is where things get...weird. Breath deep, and prepare to scratch yr head faster than you can say 'Home Blitz.' LP limited edition of 200 with full color paste-on sleeves

ERNEST V. STONEMAN - 'THE UNSUNG FATHER OF COUTNRY MUSIC'

Formats
  • 5SPH001 - 2xCDs
    880336005098
Details

New to Forte, 5 String Productions present Ernest V. Stoneman, pioneering composer & country performer, defined the formula of "three chords and the truth" and became the first rural singer/songwriter of the 20th century to record. This collection features 46 beautifully re-mastered performances of Ernest Stoneman and his circle of talented friends & family. Sentimental love songs, early gospel hymns, fiddle-breakdowns, and disaster songs are included in this set with over 20 never before reissued. Ernest Stoneman's earliest recordings bridged the span between authentic field recordings and studio produced country music and demonstrate the highest quality of musicianship with a unique sensitivity for both traditional tunes, comedy skits, and original handmade songs. With an introduction by Patsy Stoneman, the two-CD set with a 44 page booklet-which contains many rare & haunting images-was respectfully crafted by the Grammy award winning team of producers Christopher C. King, Henry "Hank" Sapoznik and designer Susan Archie, who helped create Charley Patton: Screamin' and Hollerin' the Blues; You Ain't Talkin' To Me: Charlie Poole and The Roots of Country Music; and People Take Warning: Murder Ballads and Disaster Songs 1913-1938. Songs Include: Goodbye To My Stepstone, The Titanic, Are You Washed In The Blood?, John Hardy, The Road To Washington, The Fate of Talmadge Osborne, The Wreck Of The C & O, Flop Eared Mule, Too Late, Mountaineer's Courtship, The Raging Sea How It Roars, Possum Trot School Exhibition, and many others. Fans of Revenant, Dust To Digital, Old Hat etc will find this a more than worthy addition to the colleection.

There was always music in our home, even when there was little food, and at times, the roof over our heads was a tarpaulin, but Daddy had three loves in his life: our mom, us kids and his music. Daddy was just recently inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and I was beginning to wonder if I would live long enough to see it happen. But it happened a short while before my 83rd birthday. ?Patsy Stoneman, from the Introduction

CHEICK HAMALA DIABETE & BOB CARLIN - 'FROM MALI TO AMERICA'

Formats
  • 5SP06004 - CD
    837101349109
Details

New label to Forte, 5 String Productions is pleased to announce the UK release of From Mali to America (5SP06004) by Cheick Hamala Diabate and Bob Carlin, with special guest, Solo Tounkara. From Mali to America blends the musical traditions of West Africa and America. As the American banjo grew from Western African roots, this exploration should come as no surprise. What is surprising is that it has taken this long for the ngoni and banjo to join together to illuminate this obscure corner of American musical history. Cheick Hamala Diabate (pronounced shake haMAHla jaBAHtay) was born in Kita, Mali, and is recognized as one of the top ngoni (a stringed lute that is the ancestor of the American banjo) players living today. The Diabates are a Jali (Griot) family that traces their heritage back over eight hundred years. Among the wellknown Malian stars with whom Diabate has appeared are Ami Koita, Kandia Kouyate, Salif Keita, Yayi Kanoute, Fanta Disco and Fadiala Diawara. More information on Cheick Hamala Diabate can be found at: www.malimusic.net Bob Carlin is probably the best-known clawhammer style banjoist performing today. Carlin has been offering performances, lectures and conferences for over thirty years. He largely left the solo arena in the mid-1990s after an invitation to join the band of songwriter John Hartford. Since Hartford's death in 2001, Carlin has returned to solo performing and appearances with other musicians. He has participated in three Grammy-nominated recordings. His book The Birth of the Banjo: Joel Walker Sweeney and Early Minstrelsy was published this spring by McFarland & Company. Nominated for a Grammy in 2007.
