The vinyl came and went, we had a whole heap...it sneaked into the WIRE top 5 of 2008, and now its gettign a CD issue on the MEDS label. Vinyl might come back at some point, who knows... a dusty nasty scuzz thats essential, not a follow up to the Load album (itself a blast of raw) nor their In The Red album (unkempt, gutter spuzz garage no-fi), led by Hospital leader Adam Stonehouse, this album also feats new member Chris Gunn from the Hunches. Nice digipak, a pretty much essential record, play loud, play often.

We are getting a handful, oneway orders only..stupidly limited...a special edition of 50 Handmade Triangular Polycarbonate 8" EPs.,: A special 8" triangular hand-carved polycarbonate record from Hackney's own answer to the Dodo, which of course had the advantage of flight, didn't it. Featuring Madonna, Nasal Sex, Sock Shop and Tom Stoppard. God in Hackney is Andy Cooke (Socrates that practices music) and Nathaniel Mellors (Skill 7 Stamina 12); Yes, expensive, but an artefact to covet!

SPIRAL JOY BAND - 'LITTLE SPARROW'

Little Sparrow is the third VHF release for this Southwestern Virginia ensemble that specializes in transportational sound sheets. Derived from the extended Pelt / Jack Rose / Black Twigs family, Spiral Joy Band traffics in lengthy microtonal explorations rooted in the expansive tradition of beards like Taj Mahal Travellers, Henry Flynt, Theatre of Eternal Music, etc. The four tracks here are an evolution from the trance-like gong and percussion sounds of recent Joy Band releases, with the quartet putting more of an emphasis on heavily bowed string sounds. Mike Gangloff's fiddle, which plays it relatively straight in the Black Twigs (and occasionally Pelt), cuts loose here with some of the gnarliest string scratching this side of Tony Conrad's Four Violins, giving the music a searing, visceral edge. The final track finds the band literally standing in the Atlantic Ocean, with their gongs and Tibetan bowls shimmering out a gentle lullaby. "No overdubs, no amplification, no effects." Little Sparrow has been printed in a very limited edition, with an elegant heavy card wallet featuring illustrations by Emily Keown. Lengthy microtonal explorations in the tradition of Taj Mahal Travellers, Henry Flynt, Theatre of Eternal Music, etc.

KURT VILE - 'CONSTANT HITMAKER'

Philadelphian one-man band Kurt Vile kicks off this excellent record with a lo-fi pop anthem: 'Freeway' is a simple enough guitar & drum machine affair, but there's a raw, energetic romanticism that instantly taps into the tropes of great Americana songwriters, & the fact that this is all strung together in a punky, DIY setting only serves to make the record more effective & heartstring-tugging. Not all-out pop though: you'll find weird sketchy pieces that sound like the emissions of some far out supermarket synth drones, like some freakish combination of Ariel Pink & Atlas Sound. Thoroughly weird & unfocussed, but not without considerable pop melody...and structure. Imagine Bob Pollard and Lou Barlow losing their Lo-fi Crown(s) to this chap...its easy.
