Fake Surfers, the fourth album by Seattle's prolific and sacred Intelligence, is destined to change your whole outlook on "pop" music. As with 2007's Deuteronomy, The Intelligence has employed In The Red house producer Mike McHugh at the Distillery to hone their edge to its sharpest yet. The possibility of an industrial/pop music crossover seems as unlikely as a black metal/country conglomeration, but on this new album, The Intelligence introduces a whole new spectrum of sonic awareness cleverly buried under little piles of dirt, with glimmering specks of brilliance poking through. Lars Finberg, who performs here as The Intelligence, makes experimental post-punk rock weighted down by paranoia. As the bolts-and-bolts drummer of A-Frames, he builds songs off goose-stepping beats and coded lyrics. The Intelligence can't help but swing a little, however-the singing hints at emotion, as stilted phrasing sometimes becomes a howl. It never breaks a sweat, but these songs are like pop that has been wiretapped, shocked, and muzzled, whereas the A-Frames are a robot's guess at how rock music sounds. The Intelligence has faint whiffs of Swell Maps, Tronics, and Wire's Chairs Missing, though Fake Surfers is more relaxed and evenly paced than any previous releases. The sole cover on the album, "Pony People" by LA's Wounded Lion, has been stripped down to an acoustic pop ditty. This is by far the best Intelligence release yet?until the next one.

PSYCHEDELIC HORSESHIT - 'SHITGAZE ANTHEMS'

***we have 20 copies with broken sleeves: we will sell these (they arent that bad....they look fine, but...) cheap as...!!first come first served..etc..., what has happened since we last peeked in on these "shitgaze" innovators? Well, that famous "distorto-lo-fi-sound" has been popping up in quite open spaces: No Age has become the new Britney Spears, Wavves crashed in outta nowhere like a mid-90s grunge signing, and Vivian Girls are playing on the speakers in Urban Outfitter stores nationwide. Expect better production, poppier songs with druggier references, and elements as disparate as dub & emo combining to form a revionistic classic sound that is at once new & strangely familiar

JACK O & THE TENNESSEE TEARJERKERS - 'DISCO OUTLAW'

Details

Jack Yarber (aka Jack O) is an underground Memphis legend. With a band family tree that goes back to the early 80s with Corinth, Mississippi punks Johnny Vomit and the Dry Heaves and Memphis new wavers The End through ragged rockers the Compulsive Gamblers and the influential garage punk trio the Oblivians, Yarber knows no bounds - and, unlike many in his field - seems to get better with age. After putting a blender to Dan Penn, Dr. Feelgood, Marc Bolan and Ike Turner on his last five solo records, "The Disco Outlaw" is the happy result of his musical exploration and ambition: a focused album packed with bits and pieces of his past that flows seamlessly to create something entirely new. Is this the year Yarber finally gets his due?

GANGLIANS - 'S/T'

Formats

Details

Sacramento's Ganglians want an island somewhere where they can soak in the sun and prowl the canopy by night. It's not often that they do get out, but they can get down for that. Recording sometimes as one, sometimes as four it's a real game to figure out where the entity comes from and where it's going. First and foremost it's about uncertain pleasures. It's a bit like choose your own adventure. There's "codeine balladry"; a slightly upsetting tempo that is quickly flushed into an aural high, the next moment you're in the toy strewn abyss of the bedroom and then out to the tribal caves of the natives. The planets align and the sun beats down, palms tingling, and you are on the island they've built, the scenery constantly shifting for a better view, of you. 8 tracks in 24 min.

"If you ask them, Sacramento's Ganglians consist of "the whole of the
Ganglian race" as well as "the squirrels in the walls that bounce acorns across the ceiling in the dead of night." So far, I've resisted the urge to look too hard to find out more. What I do know is that the group, who
creates all-over-the-map damaged-and-psychedelic noise-pop, is about to release an LP on Woodsist. The label's already had a banner year and change via Crystal Stilts, Wavves, Blank Dogs, Vivian Girls, etc. Add this to the trophy case. Really, Ganglians' sound isn't as easy to
peg as some of their cohorts -- listen to three songs and you'll hear three different approaches with some similar threads running through. See, for instance, "Hair"'s rollicking dark surf and the more pastoral (and considerably epic) "Valiant Brave." After that, there are links for more."-Brandon Stosuy /Stereogum

HOLE CLASS - 'S/T'

Formats
  • MEDSIV - LP
Details

Mostly recorded on a farm in Ohio in 2006 by BETH MURPHY (TIMES NEW VIKING) and ROB ENBORN (EAT SKULL). Great pop songs from this duo with a "gothic country" vibe that vaguely calls to mind an interpretation of Nancy & Lee by Neil & Jennifer. There is a stripped down feel and intimacy to everything here. From roadtrip singalongs to true heartbreakers, a perfect album. No returns!!!
