ANDREW WEATHERALL - 'A POX ON THE PIONEERS'

Formats
  • RGCCD017 - CD
    809651401729
Details

NEW RELEASE DATE: This is the first ever 'solo' album from Andrew Weatherall. Weatherall should require no introduction, but in case he does (shame on you), here it is: having forged a path against the mediocrity of popular music for nearly two decades by issuing releases under the names Sabres of Paradise, Emissions and Two Lone Swordsmen (both the latter with producer Keith Tenniswood ? aka Radioactive Man), as well as having produced the now-legendary Screamadelica by Primal Scream, he has still found time to run a number of record labels, notably Sabres of Paradise and, of course, Rotters Golf Club. "A Pox on The Pioneers" is a career-scanning yet forward-thinking beast of a release, taking clear sonic cues from his status as a dance, techno & house phenomenon whilst skillfully acknowledging his grandly professed love of protest music - Rockabilly, Soul, Rock 'n' Roll - from the mid 20th Century. As Mr Weatherall himself says, "I'm not purist, I'm not precious, it's just about that rock n roll essence, whether it's done with a drum machine or by twanging a guitar. It's just about that swing, that kind of groove, just music that means something to the people that listen to it and the people that made it."

A massive coup / release for Forte Distribution: From Fluxus and performance-art pioneer and Two Virgins to chart-topping dance-music heroine (inspiring punk rock along the way), Yoko Ono has been an innovative and influential force on music and art, while simultaneously campaigning for peace on the world's stage. At 76 years young, Yoko continues to kick ass. BETWEEN MY HEAD AND THE SKY, a career-defining album made with her new Plastic Ono Band. The record is a gorgeous, mind-melting blend of styles, restating and sharpening themes while plunging into the always-mysterious future. METH TEETH - 'EVERYTHING WENT WRONG'

Formats
  • WOODSIST030 - LP

Details

***"Meth Teeth reside in Portland OR. and in some ways embody the rainy day big country vibe of the city with its youth culture dreamers, old druggies, and rustic history. There is something that is really hard to pin down about Meth Teeth, the songs rely on simple ramshackle rhythms, upbeat shinny guitar interplay, and big fat chord churners, and a lot of tambourine banging away on the snare drum. Ultra catchy summertime rockers keep you sad and lonely, and upbeat and hopeful all at once."-Shawn Reed/ night people

DORONCO GUMO - 'OLD PUNKS'

Formats
  • HOLY738109 - LP & DL
    N/A
Details

Doronco Gumo is led by Doronco, a bass player most well known for his stints with Les Rallizes D?nud?s, Suishou no Fune, and Keiji Haino. Translated as "Mud Cloud," the name is actually poetic in a Zen beggar / wandering monk kind of way. On Old Punks, Doronco is joined by members of Maher Shalal Hash Baz, a Frenchman, and an addi-tional female vocalist. The band uses vocals, bassoon, and trumpet over a see-sawing battle of piano / guitar shrill balanced against warm rhythms. Their avant bar-rock style is not unlike Cinder-ella's Revenge recorded in the same studio as Vintage Vio-lence with the conscious heartbreak of something like Even Serpents Shine. A bright-to-bummer-and-back-to-bright narrative flows throughout the album's nine songs.Resequenced to include an additional track not on the Japanese CD version, Old Punks nails down something for you didn't know needed to be nailed down. "The sound balances the idiot-avant stumble-punk moves of the Org axis with classic dark Tokyo psych, with fuzz guitar leads and vocals from Doronco that sound one ciga-rette away from oblivion. There's a decadent, wasted edge to most of the proceedings, crossing the enka / psych divide with songs that orbit the Kazuki Tomokawa school of suave existentialism, high, childlike, almost Reiko Kudo-esque backing vocals from Reina Higa, and some great overload-ed garage rock moves. A ton of Tokyo heads have been rav-ing about this CD and it's not hard to see why-some of the best post-Rallizes avant punk to emerge from that secretive cabal to date." -Volcanic Tongue

THE MANTLES - 'S/T'

Formats
  • SB104 - LP & DL
    N/A
Details

With two acclaimed seven-inches under their belt, The Mantles answer the call for more with a stunning debut LP sure to please all who cross its path. The Mantles have been dead-on in distilling a contemporary pop / psych concoction that mixes equal parts early Chills with early Dream Syndicate-and really, who among us wouldn't want a bottle of that with which to quietly tipple the day away? Recorded by Greg Ashley, the LP taps said hybrid, and if anything, burrows deeper into the core of rock, extracting essential magma that fuses early SF Ballroom psychedelia, Byrds-ian jangle-pop, and the Velvet Underground's extraordinary ability for serpentine leads and bridges. And yep, that pretty much covers all the bases. Look for the band to embark on their first US tour in September, supporting Ty Segall coast to coast.

?? a vibe somewhere between the crisp gauze of Midwest
groups associated with the early-?80s garage revival (Vertebrats,
Plasticland, etc.) and the mysto-stroke of late-?80s
New Zealand.? ?Byron Coley, The Wire
?... really stokes the node in its uncanny similarity to oldschool
Paisley Underground?you know, before it had
been so sadly tagged. The strains, strums, and streams that
permeate so lost and wonderfully ? remind my tired soul
of early Leaving Trains, The Last, as well as the roster that
made up Steve Wynn?s Down There label.?

so limited, its probably sold out by the time this email goes out..sorry..Comprised of various members from Christchurch's obscure fringe (MCGOOHANS, SHALLOWS and SCORCHED EARTH POLICY), GAS harkens forth with an effusive hybrid of Nuggets-styled garage psych fused into the miasmic, post industrial rust clamor of Hearthan-era Pere Ubu. These recording date from '96 to '98 and the six-track EP clocks in at 14 minutes flat. Edition of 300, no repress.
