Cult new wave band The Art Museums tell sordid tales of artists, lovers, and poseurs. Bay Area psych burnouts Josh Alper and Glenn Donaldson converged in San Francisco in the summer of '09 to record Anglophile jams on a Tascam 388 tape machine (state of the art home-recording circa '85). Rough Frame is their debut LP for the Woodsist label. They would make a hi-fi studio record if they had the money, but reviewers would probably still say it was lo-fi. The Art Museums are into: art, poetry, Whaam! Records, and films about Mods. The Art Museums are not into: flared trousers, drip coffee, or dirty sneakers. Woodsist start the year with a a whole run of keepers again. Vinyl is not returnable. new lower CD price on new Woodsist titles.

KING AND THE OLIVE FIELDS - 'FIREWORKS EP'

Formats
  • KATOF001 - 10"
    N/A
Details

King and the Olive Fields is the project of Philip Serfaty, who resides in the infamous London borough of New Cross. He is sometimes but not always accompanied by his very talented, beautiful group of friends who often come and go and when they come, they lend his music the sound of their percussion, their reverb-soaked guitars, cellos, banjos, ukuleles and voices. The music is delicate indie-pop that focuses on the struggles that love and heartache can bring. Their debut EP "Fireworks" shows the influence of the messy minds of less traditional singer songwriters, one that took root in colorful tape before blooming into freshly cut vinyl. Super limited, we wont get many.

San Francisco's Moon Duo was formed in 2009 by Sanae Yamada and Erik Johnson (Wooden Shjips). Inspired initially by the legendary John Coltrane and Rashied Ali, Moon Duo counts such variant groups as Silver Apples, Royal Trux, Moolah, Suicide, and Cluster as touchstones. Utilizing primarily guitar, keyboards, percussion, and vocals, the pair plays space against form to create a primordial and disorienting sonic stew. They released two acclaimed records in 2009: the Love on the Sea 12-inch single on Sick Thirst and the Killing Time EP on Sacred Bones. Escape, their debut long-player on Woodsist, marks the fullest realization yet of the young group's evolving sound. "Moon Duo are the combined forces of Wooden Shjips' Erik Johnson and Sanae Yamada, and following a couple of singles this year, they're releasing a debut full-length on Woodsist in 2010. 'Stumbling 22nd St.,' a gauzy, lo-fi rock number built on a repetitive riff, goes on for nearly seven minutes and presents a pretty epic introduction to this band." -Pitchfork: Vinyl is not returnable: Wooden Shjips have new singles compilation out in March, tour in April, Moon Duo are going to release a bunch more 7"s over the next few months! And a uk /eu tour in the late summer. a busy year for Mr Johnson!

MV / EE - 'HOME COMFORT'

Formats
  • WOODSIST039 - LP
    N/A
Details

"Here is the first ever all live LP of MV & EE material and it is the perfect example of the scene in the tapers pit. The familiar tunes which have become staples in their set shine with an unheard intensity with killer solos and sonic excursions into the unknown, and then there is the deep of their singular 'environments', their space which manages to showcase the pastoral freakouts and cosmic raga forms so singular to this unique band. Home Comfort distills the gems of their live shows onto sweet wax. For those familiar with MATT and ERIKA's cottage label Heroine Celestial Agriculture, known to the heads as 'Heroine,' this LP reads like a best of curated by the 'you are there' Swingin' Pig and the results are a stunning cross section of their duo exchange, funky trio with WOODS' JEREMY EARL and big band exploratory stomp with DOC DUNN, MUSKOX, and WILLIE LANE of the GOLDEN ROAD. Here is the true sound of MV & EE with the songs, the extended jams and the feeling. This seminal duo and all they sail with need to be heard live and need to be heard live often, what a glorious document from the tapers pit. That's tapers pit twice in a paragraph, class. Peace."-Woodsist. Limited to 550 copies. No returns, we are getting very few indeed, MV/EE are touring next week... dont be greedy, but dont miss out..

ROBERT POLLARD - 'WE ALL GOT OUT OF THE ARMY'

Formats
  • GBVI10 - LP
    655035081014
  • GBVI10CD - CD
    655035081021
Details

Robert Pollard simply can't be stopped. Indeed, the ever-prolific bard is in the midst of one of the most creative and hyperactive periods of his career. Since the summer of 2008, he has released an astonishing ten (10!) varied and terrific albums with his bands Boston Spaceships, Circus Devils, Cosmos, and as Robert Pollard. Retired from the road, two years deep with his own Guided By Voices Inc. label, the man has the artistic freedom to record what he wants, whenever he wants. What's particularly remarkable is the high quality of his output. With We All Got Out of the Army, Pollard delivers yet again. The new album blasts out of the speakers with "Silk Rotor," a power-pop gem with a swirling, fist-pumping chorus. This song alone is worth the album price. For the next 38 minutes, Pollard puts his unique stamp on sludgy, glam psychedelia ("Rice Train"), jubilant, synth-spiked pop ("I'll Take the Cure"), the kind of moody, melodic, perfectly weird rock 'n' roll long beloved by Guided By Voices fans ("I Can See," "Poet Bums"), and concludes with a haunting acoustic / electric ode with shades of Bowie circa Hunky Dory ("Faster to Babylon"). Vinyl non returnable!
