Males is the sixth full-length release from Seattle, Washington's The Intelligence. This time, main-brain Lars Finberg ditched his usual method of recording all the instruments himself and had his current touring band play on it-Susannah Welbourne, Beren Ekine Huett (Eat Skull) and Chris Woodhouse (Mayyors, FM Knives, Karate Party), who also served as the record's producer. Hopefully this will still be the current line up by the time you read this. The results are as powerful as a punch in the face by Mike Tyson but with the velvet touch of a dandy fop. Marrying buzzsaw punk, DIY post-punk, ramshackle garage (as in played by The Fall-not the Chesterfield Kings), and pop hooks aplenty, Males is The Intelligence's finest statement to date. Current line-up features members of Eat Skull, Mayyors, FM Knives, Karate Party. Major tours of the US and Europe in the works. No returns on vinyl.

Tracks

1. Bong Life
2. Tuned to Puke
3. Sailor Itch
4. The Universe
5. Like Like Like Like Like Like Like
6. Estate Sales
7. Mom or a Parking Lot
8. White Corvette
9. The Beetles
10. Chateau Bandit
11. Males

Press

?[The Intelligence casts] a pronounced British Invasion
pop influence in warped, peak-level lo-fi sonics, emphasizing
a connection between post-punk and psychedelia that
stretches from Clinic and Guided by Voices through the deconstructionist
pop of Swell Maps and Wire and back to the
whimsical wordsmithery of Syd Barrett and Skip Spence.?

Memphis is home to several of rock's most endearingly offkilter rock storytellers, from Jim Dickinson to Jeffrey Evans to Ross Johnson. To that list, one can now add Shawn Cripps, leader of The Limes. On the band's debut full-length, Rhinestone River, Cripps retains the musical talents of Harlan T. Bobo, who previously helped on The Limes' Rock 'n' Roll Heart single. Bobo's hypnotic keyboards perfectly complement Cripps's gritty guitar work and vocals, particularly on "Sounds Like a Shimmy." Rhinestone River also features contributions by Memphis scene stalwarts Ross Johnson, Paul Buchignani (Afghan Whigs, Bobo's backing band), Alicja Trout (Lost Sounds, River City Tanlines) and Bruce Saltmarsh ('68 Comeback, Porch Ghouls). The title track, with its wobbly gait and lyrics like "Sitting on this barstool, sweating the rhinestone river," can induce secondhand drunkenness in anyone within earshot. "Rhinestone River" is the closest an American band has gotten to the pickled poetry of the Country Teasers. The momentum and melody of "Bottom of the Hole" unfurl like the narrative thrust of a bourbon-soaked anecdote at two in the morning. The album's crown jewel is the closing track, "Last Year." Cater-cornered rock guitars and Cripps's talkin' vocal style build up to a woozy climax that culminates in a feral "woohoo." Like the other great songs on Rhinestone River, it threatens to fall apart several times but Cripps, with a little help from his friends and his engaging personality, holds it all together. No vinyl returns. GONER is this year's label of geatness!

CIRCLE PIT - 'BRUISE CONSTELLATION'

Formats
  • SB140 - LP

Details

Glimmer Twins infatuation-well, some folks can pull it off, others cannot. We all know how well Royal Trux rocked 'n' cocked it through the '90s, and now in the second decade of the 21st century, Circle Pit have sauntered into the boozy sway with their debut LP Bruise Constellation. Seemingly born out of the tar and tobacco of Nellc?te / Exile on Main Street-session blooze, Circle Pit ably finesse a torn and frayed sound that's as retro as it is original. Oozing raw talent and possessed with uncanny sensual / sexual osmosis, Bruise Constellation will have you believing it's the Summer of '72 all over again (again).

Tracks

1. Wave Machine
2. Dead Meat
3. Speed Limits
4. Infinity
5. Hurricane
6. Another Trick
7. Drowning in the Dark
8. Shallow Grave
9. Strange Blue
10. Beginning and the End

?? fuses elements of scum rock, garage and straight rock
to create songs of detached cool, displacement and frustration.?
?Spook Magazine
?Circle Pit is the type of rock band that most others are too
lazy to be: aligned closely with tradition but replete with
the type of individuality and wit, honesty and intimacy that
is usually shed in favor of blindly channelling riffs already
written. Bruise Constellation sheds light on the gaudy
subterranean sleaze of a Sydney rapidly devolving into a
Ballardian capitalist nightmare?all tidy swept streets, pedestrian
free thoroughfares and oiled seven-to-when-youpass-
out workdays. It?s also the catchiest record you?re going
to hear all year.? ?Mess + Noise

THE DOOZER - 'GREAT EXPLORERS'

Formats
  • SB137 - LP
    655030113710
Details

Originally released as a CD on the UK label Pickled Egg in 2009, Great Explorers is the second full-length effort from oneman dynamo The Doozer. Siltbreeze was delightfully chuffed to make its acquaintance (by way of Matt Valentine's suggestion) and agreed to release it unto all the world on the muchsought- after vinyl format. Hailing from Cambridge, England, The Doozer bears an almost uncanny vocal resonance to past legend Syd Barrett, as well as a knack for cobbling together occasional found-tape narration with string-strum and hypnotic percussive plonk not unlike The Shadow Ring. The gin doesn't come much pinker than this. Great Explorers is limited to 500 copies and includes a free download.

Tracks

1. Nothing Like the Hero
2. God Does Not Need Light
3. Hornbill
4. Brother Lazarus
5. Semut 1
6. Up and Down
7. Great Explorers
8. Public Transport
9. Decisive Mind
10. Semut 2

Press

?The Doozer makes angular bedroom psych-pop from guitar,
keyboards and drum machines. He insists that he ?builds? music,
and it?s an apposite word. Sheet Music has a lovely constructed
precision underlying its surface awkwardness, with a gift for
finding chords or sour melodic twists that initially sound wrong,
but turn out right. His counter-intuitive logic and oblique associations
put him in a lineage connecting The Incredible String
Band, Kevin Ayres and Billy Childish, but most of all another
Cambridge alumnus, Syd Barrett. The Doozer has a voice of
his own, though, and the quavers and quirks of songs like ?Dogwalking?
and ?Burn the Tape? lodge themselves in the brain with
strange persistence.? ?Sam Davies, The Wire
?The Doozer furrows a path somewhere between the progressive
folk styling of Animal Collective and the wide-eyed wonder
of early Badly Drawn Boy. Weirdness levels are ramped up to
eleven?not least due to some initially jarring chord sequences?
and pastoral psychedelia reigns in a not unlovely debut.?

Forte is pleased to announce the addition of Sitckman Reocrds to its roster: full listing of catalogue next time. But we start the ball rolling with. 35007 co-founder and guitar player, Bertus Fridael, has now started a solo project called "Mother-Unit". As the guitar player of 35007, Bertus was responsible for most of their typical guitar riffs and the heavy guitar sound that made 35007 famous. Their heavy wall of sound, long soundscapes and wild video shows were legendary. To keep the best tradition of instrumental rock music alive, he is now releasing a new album titled " Brain-Massage". The fingerprint he put on 35007 is also present on this new album. By learning how to play drums and keyboards after ending his 35007 voyage in 2003, he had total freedom to compose his music, to be sure that all the instruments fit the guitar riffs perfectly and to give the music an even more hypnotic and massive sound than that which was 35007's trademark. Not only will these heavily hypnotic sounds lead you to another world, the more mellow parts will also guide you to another universe. This album will give you the total brain massage your mind and body was waiting for, it hurts a little but still feels great. While listening to these hypnotic sounds you will experience new dimensions in time and space, leading you to the question "what do we actually know?". Have a nice trip! Vinyl is 500 only White vinyl, and non returnable: for fans of 35007, Hawkwind, Amon Duul, etc
