Lords of Falconry are a rock group with a spectacular psychedelic edge. Songs blast green, inferno-like hard rock, funneling clouds and stripping away sludge, turning it into the waltz-like sound of mastodons stomping across the tundra. Classic heavy psych is alive in tracks that interweave soft voices and loud guitars that continuously pummel and enchant at every turn like a seven-headed cobra. C.S. Lewis had better watch his step! If psychedelia is quixotically na?ve, then Lords of Falconry is its 21st-century doppelganger or spectral double wise to the ways of the fallen world. In an era of organized play dates and close parental supervision, there are already enough people ready to cooperate. Lords of Falconry offers what is missing-real rock music. Formed in a quest to find the lost note, Lords of Falconry examines the intersection of a mystical crossroads between the fourth dimension and their own 3-D universe. Since both members are a bit insolent and rather unrealistic about much of reality, the fact that Lords of Falconry even exists is remarkable in and of itself. This is wild wild rock action, like the that first Zodiac Mindwarp EP, like the first Hellacopters LP, you want to hear a rock and roll record that blasts out of the speakers like an amphetamine charged rhino looking for action.... this makes Tame Impala sound like the Communards! No vinyl returns...

Some people didn't know what to make of Cheap Time's self-titled debut album when it was released in 2008. It was a huge leap from their first 7-inch of the year before, and it didn't really sound like anything else going at that time. Too glamtastic and bubblegum for the garage purists and too raw for indie rockers. Cheap Time's new album, entitled Fantastic Explanations (and Similar Situations), proves that they are capable of still further artistic leaps. Guitarist / songwriter Jeffrey Novak soaks up his influences and spits out new songs with more complex structures and melodies than ever before, while bassist Stephen Braren adds backbone to the songs with his heavily compressed Roy-Wood-style playing, and new drummer Ryan Sweeney tightens up the sound while still keeping things very loose. The Fantastic Explanations sessions have also become something of legend-tracking for the album ended abruptly after engineer Mike McHugh suffered a breakdown and kicked the band out of the studio at gunpoint. Once the tapes were retrieved over a month later, Earle Mankey (ex-Sparks member and producer of the Quick's Mondo Deco and The Runaways' Queens of Noise) was brought in to mix the final album, which turned out to be a perfect match! Anyone who saw Cheap Time on tour last year opening for Yo La Tengo will be pleased with the way these new songs have turned out on record. Fantastic Explanations (and Similar Situations) will surely surprise, divide and leave fans scratching their heads as to where Cheap Time will go next! NO VINYL RETURNS

"Royal Baths haven't had it easy. In a city where garage rock reigns supreme and new bands form and fade away with the blink of an eye, it's tough to get noticed unless your songs can satisfy punk rock attention spans. But with four- to six-minute tracks and slow, methodical drum beats, Royal Baths have won their way into the hearts of even the most raucous audiences-a testament to both the ability that San Franciscans have to recognize talent when they see it, and also to the incredible music and spectacle that the Royal Baths have created. "The band has its obvious influences-The Velvet Underground and Spacemen 3-but to define them by these comparisons would be to vastly oversimplify their sound. Songwriters Jeremy Cox and Jigmae Baer draw from psychedelic soundscapes; dark, personal, and esoteric subject matter; and a bit of punk's apathetic humor and exigency. They conjure up haunting, reverb-heavy hymns to the degenerate and the broken." -Emily Rose Epstein (SF Weekly, Thrasher Magazine, drummer for Ty Segall)

SOFT LANDING - 'S/T'

Formats
  • BING071 - LP

Details

Soft Landing is all about respect. Sure, they love our environment and our womenfolk, but there is also a sincere appreciation for musical styles both near and far. Taking an entrenched understanding of Jorge Ben, percolating the groove of Dirty Projectors and incorporating all there is to learn from Italo disco and Brazilian Tropicalia, Pendleton, Oregon-born guitarist and singer Paul Collins crafts a sound bereft of irony and deep, deep, deep with heart. Rounded out by Perrin Cloutier (drums) and Mike Lawless (guitar, bass, Farfisa, Moog), Soft Landing plummets into your mind while expanding out into the stratosphere. Armed with a variety of experience (be it as leader of the modestly titled Paul Collins Dance Machine, creator of numerous cassette releases of droning experimentation or bass player and general rabble-rouser in Beirut), Collins cuts through any stylized muck on Soft Landing's self-titled debut to find something essentially human and teeming with emotion. With the help of producer Griffin Rodriguez (Beirut, Need New Body, Icy Demons), the trio fashioned an album thick with low end, unafraid to let a beat turn into a dance and possessing an extremely loose vibe. Only on "Pendleton Woolen"-the album's centerpiece- does the tempo get low and soft. Fans of Beirut will get woozy for this.

"When the On Patrol test presses hit the turntables, an epilogue burst from the side of the Sun Araw cranium immediately, before it was even cold on wax. The camera jumped all by itself, spontaneous framing and new perspectives: "Last Chants" grips you in heavy, end-of-shift panic; who knew "Holodeck Blues" got so rowdy? Surrounded and staring down the barrels of some serious forces, the scum is rising. No worries: you got backup, don't forget who's wearing the badge. Flip the vision and make it all the way down, it's your party. "Midnight Locker" is one chilled exhalation, all cold sweat and steam vents. The cab ride home comes with AM radio ghosts, whispering again of that heavier zone, it's time to get back. The flip side is pure secret sun-day, sacred rest: the stairway to the stars. "Deep Temple," float on up, the Heavy Deeds are waiting." -Aristocrat P. Child

Patience is both appropriate and inappropriate as a title for the latest release by The Dead C-inappropriate because it's been only two years since the last album, which in Dead C Time is but the flicker of a candle; appropriate since the key to enjoying their sounds is willingness to sit down, listen and let the music take over your mind. These four unforgiving and intense tracks will not be confused with the work of any other band. Recorded in Dunedin over the Southern summer of 2009/10, Patience captures a restless band that never settles into any form. The trio of Michael Morley, Bruce Russell and Robbie Yeats makes their improvised music sound like the most substantial ever recorded, no matter in what direction they go. Here, vocal-less, thick and thundering electric drones compound and retreat like a Pacific Ocean of noise. Morley once again provides the artwork and continues in his color palatte of late. Its circular, flowery texture provides the perfect mandala for contemplation while lost within the deep meditations that Patience inspires. Vinyl pressing of 1000 copies, includes free digital download coupon. NO RETURNS ON VINYL!

For any fan of real rock 'n' roll, it would be a goddamn shame to sleep on the raucous and inebriating revelry of Montreal's most delirious band, The Demon's Claws. These guys have been pounding out crazed rock slop since 2004, in which time they've toured endlessly and released two full-length albums and countless singles and 12-inches. Now the band has finally followed up their stunning 2007 album, Satan's Little Pet Pig, with The Defrosting Of? For legal reasons, the title has to be incomplete. We can only say that it's a reference to a very big name in the world of animation, long rumored to be cryogenically frozen. The Demon's Claws play roots-soaked music so ramshackle and loose that it sounds as if it could fall apart at any second, yet hangs together perfectly. Part Gun Club, part Back from the Grave, part lo-fi distorted crunch, part young Mick Jagger with a mouth full of pills, all delivered with a weird, backwoods creepiness. Stepping up his countrified roots on this outing, frontman Jeff Clarke displays a gift for writing incredibly catchy hillbilly stomp unrivaled today. The guy is the real deal. Self-described "liars and scumbags" and sweaty and belligerent by nature, Demon's Claws are one of the most dynamic combos to take the filthy route directly to your brain. The Defrosting Of? solidifies their earnest ambition to stomp their Americana-tinged blues-punk death trip into submission. "Their music reminds me of when I used to visit an old cabin in Northern Ontario and take mushrooms and drink tons of Labatt's and go night fishing. This is what we should've been playing instead of Sabbath." -Terminal Boredom No vinyl returns. BLack Lips and Strange Boys fans get hold of this!

PURLING HISS - 'PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT'

Formats
  • WOODSIST047 - LP

Details

Resident guitarist / noise-smith Mike Polizze of Philly jam-punks Birds of Maya takes another one-off vacation with Purling Hiss. Public Service Announcement take a more song-oriented approach than Polizze's self-titled debut LP (Permanent Records) and its follow-up, Hissteria (Richie Records). With the treble down and the tape-heads bleeding, the LP is a montage of flange-covered tunes, in-the-red and submerged below sea level. "... reminds me of some of my other favorite mystery rock albums, like High Speed and the Afflicted Man's Get Stoned Ezy, or any Les Rallizes Denudes or Vermonster records--not necessarily in style or attack, but certainly in spirit. This is full-on destroyer guitar rock, with a palpable sense of nothing to lose and everything to prove. To me, it sounds like a serious, sincere statement--and you don't hear that every day." --Ripley Johnson (Moon Duo, Wooden Shjips)

SEXUAL OBJECTS - 'CUCUMBER'

Details

The Sexual Objects is the latest project assembled by Davy Henderson, previously leader of the hugely influential Fire Engines and The Nectarine No.9. The group has released four limited edition singles to date exclusively on 7" vinyl, all of which have long sold out. The debut album, Cucumber, is a joint release on the Creeping Bent and Aktion und Spass labels and is only available on vinyl / LP format. The tracks on Cucumber were recorded in various studios in Scotland and featured several producers; Boards of Canada, Russell Burn (Henderson's old Fire Engines cohort), and John Disco (Bis). The initial idea of the singles was to capture the raw immediacy of early records by the Move and Modern Lovers, however echoes of John Cale's early solo work and Lou Reed's Transformer pervade the overall sound of album.

4****/5 UNCUT.The Guardian : "Time to lubricate your living room again,...doo wop x Velvets / Television drones x Bowie / Eno glam - period, it's totally ace"

The List : ?A frighteningly assured amalgam of freakbeat garage glam and east coast cool? Henderson and co are still the best rock?n?roll band on this or any other planet?

Basement Scam : ?Henderson spews a languid croon that sounds like Bob Dylan in the mid-sixties over an appealing Bolan-esque boogie, glamming it up like a reverbless Jesus & Mary Chain, the whole history of Scots pop flowing through their veins?.

Fire Escape Talking : ?Here Come The Rubber Cops has the attractively louche narcotic drawl of Lou Reed, and sounds like Prince taking on The Only Ones. You can hear a bit of Marquee Moon?s apocalypse ? the darkness doubling, lightning striking itself ? too?
