HIGH WOLF - 'ATLAS NATION'

Formats
  • HOLY1983 - LP
    655035698311
Details

France's High Wolf possesses a natural-born ability to produce tones most conducive to inducing transcendental states. Prolific without wearing out his welcome, the guitarist and effects box manipulator sets loose fervid streams of fever-dream drones. High Wolf's tracks sound as if they've been sluicing since the beginning of time, siphoned for teasingly brief absorption before they shimmer off to the vanishing point. This elite droneur is one of the few musicians who could title a 7-inch A Guide to Healing without it coming off as an ironic gesture or a laughable boast. (Cop one and try not to get a spring in your chakras.) Atlas Nation-recorded in 2010 after a long trip to India and Nepal-deepens High Wolf's penetration into the mystic. It evokes an uneasy peace with a new breed of tribal psychedelia shorn of all hokey signifiers. "Fuji Descent" starts the album with what could be a languid, paradisiacal soundtrack to a scrapped Alejandro Jodorowsky film. "The Dawn of Man" is a stark, stoned processional burrowing into malarial climes where guitars squawk in ominous tongues while congas cave in chests and clear brush with a vengeance. "Raagini" magnifies and psychedelicizes Rapoon's mantric, ritualistic hand-drum patter and tropical-forest drones while hinting at Don Cherry's jazz-raga peregrinations. High Wolf claims that "Haiti" was "recorded in a couple of hours [on] the day of the big earthquake in Haiti, so it's the darkest / saddest High Wolf track ever." It's a fittingly miasmic, climactic threnody. Think of Atlas Nation as a surreal aural travelogue that takes a giant step beyond Jon Hassell's "Fourth World" music-a humid milieu teeming with alien tonalities and oracular currents. It's as welcome as a new, improved entheogen on the streets.

1. Fuji Descent
2. The Dawn of Man

Mark Sultan, better known as BBQ of one-man band and The King Khan & BBQ Show fame, has been pounding out his own stew of R&B, rockabilly, garage, doo-wop, psychedelia, punk and whatnot since he was a mere child fronting Montreal's Spaceshits. Releasing a slew of albums and touring relentlessly, Sultan has established quite a reputation as a songsmith and vocalist of the highest caliber. Recently he went into the studio and ended up more than two albums' worth of material. After trying to whittle it down to one LP, In The Red decided to simply release it all (well, most of it, anyway). Whatever I Want, Whenever I Want is two separate vinyl LPs and one abridged CD. This material represents Sultan's most adventurous and varied songwriting to date. He ditched his normal stripped-down / lo-fi approach in favor of a more full-bodied sound and replaced his one-man recording technique with a complete band, all to stunning results. Whatever I Want, Whenever I Want features a number of his musician friends; Dan Kroha of The Gories, Erin Wood of The Spits, Cole Alexander and Jared Swilley of the Black Lips, Bradford Cox of Deerhunter and King Khan, to name a few, all contributed. It has something for everybody: soul stompers, doo-wop weepers, a dash of hardcore and even an Ultravox cover!

Everyone's favorite space-age mutant skate punks The Spits are back with their long-awaited fifth album (selftitled, as were the previous four) and these twelve new action- packed songs of apocalyptic, fuzzed-out, over-driven madness do not disappoint. Going strong now for over fifteen years, smashing the windows and tearing down the walls every time they roll through town, these truly vicious visionaries have cooked punk down to its most powerful base form, crawling like Neanderthals through the muck and creating a flaming trail of hits that'll take quite a fit of dementia to ever forget. A perfect distillation of punk's original open-ended weirdness and modern music's serrated salvation, The Spits have proven themselves to be no one to fuck with, over and over again. True headliners, never to be followed and for good reason. One of the only modern bands to have several of their songs covered by their contemporaries, The Spits have already done so much but still have so much more ahead, as they continue to influence anyone with a penchant for irresistible punk music, played like there's nothing to lose. ? Twelve new throbbingly addictive tracks mix the synth work of early Devo with the best thug-punk grunt of the Ramones

BARDO POND / CARLTON MELTON - 'SPLIT'

Formats
  • AGIT009 - LP
    N/A
Details

An epic two track 40 minuter from two of the Modern Psychedelic Underground's greats, the legendary Bardo Pond spoon out the molasses with the track Fallen on side A, that has an expansive droned psych thrum, helmed by some driving rhythms, the power, the loud..and then as you are almost pummelled into nothingness, Isobel's flute comes through.and then furthur on until she begins to sing..theres wash upon wash of righteous guitar sound, a sonic attack indeed. On the flip, Agitated's flagbearers Carlton Melton bring the magiick karpet ride much higher with "Slow Growth", still as dense but almost much freer than their previous recordings, like a MV/EE Saucer Attack. Synths lead in, the name is apt, but it builds and transforms into a drone meets new-age psychedelic haze, be careful where you sit maan! The karpet lands fine..phew. 800 copies only. LP only.

RENDERERS - 'A ROCKET INTO NOTHING'

Formats
  • BING076 - CD
    600197007624
Details

Over the past two decades, The Renderers have crafted half a dozen albums of intimate psychedelia infused with Americana and noise. A Rocket Into Nothing is another extraordinary display of Brian and Maryrose Crook's talent as songwriters and sound sculptors. The Renderers are still as essential a piece of the diverse New Zealand indie rock puzzle as they were on their first Flying Nun album. Crafted during the series of earthquakes that hit the country in 2011, A Rocket Into Nothing seethes with the anxiety born of life-threatening experiences. On opener "Down River," slippery minor key melodies lie on beds of shaky feedback. Even the upbeat "This Shining Life" features wild, overblown guitars and subtle synth squeals. At any point, close listening reveals unexpected textures and tectonic shifts hidden just below the surface. More successfully than on any previous release, the band balances detail-oriented and spontaneous songwriting and recording techniques. Uncertainty plays a key role. Twenty years into most careers, bands lose the edge of their earlier work, but The Renderers' music is as exciting as ever.

Tracks

1. Down River
2. Shadow and Its Shadow
3. This Shining Life
4. Restraint of Beasts
