MUGSTAR - 'SERRA (DISTANT SUN REMIX)'

Remixes were mentioned when Agitated asked to reissue the Mugstar LP "Lime", we asked about, we got some good response! this 2 Track EP / 1 track CDEP release features the remix work of Robert Hampson (Loop / Main), he has transformed Serra into some 39 minute planeshifting kosmische epic. The first 19 or so minutes (side One on the vinyl) pulse with some fizzing electrical energies that evoke obscurio Kraut rock demo tapes from the mid 70s, the sail by, and then the second part (side Two on the vinyl) the beats, the rhythms they subside into some early (early!) Tangerine Dream-esque ambient but not ambient soundscapes, wholly immersive, wholly essential. Both "sides" combined as the whole "piece" on the CD version. The vinyl cut is deep, the pressing is in germany (natch), and will be on clear green vinyl in a clear plastic bag, limited to 800 copies for sale only.

THEE CORMANS - 'HALLOWEEN RECORD W/SPECIAL EFFECTS'

Formats
  • ITR1313LP - LP
    759718631319
Details

Fiends! Ghouls! Creeps! In the grand tradition of Frankie Stein and His Ghouls and The Deadly Ones, Thee Cormans present Halloween Record w/ Special Effects-a bona fide Halloween rock 'n' roll album just in time for the only holiday that matters. The Southern Californian biker / surf instrumental combo has been bashing out their brand of Davie-Allan-andthe- Arrows-meets-The-Ventures-on-meth thrash for several years now. Theirs is a sound informed by scratched-up '60s instrumental records, KBD punk singles and exploitation B-movies chock full of monsters, bikers and mayhem. What this group of weirdos does to the surf instrumental genre is the same as what The Mummies did to Pacific Northwest '60s rock back in the '90s-they speed it up, drag it through the mud, pour a can of politically incorrect attitude over the top and call it a pie. In this case, the pie is filled with rubber bats, plastic fangs and novelty shrunken heads. Halloween Record w/ Special Effects will make you shriek, rattle and roll! These are spine-chilling sounds guaranteed to make you shiver. Flesh-ripping guitar playing! Skull-pulverizing drum beats! Gore-spattering bass lines! Spooky, hair-raising sound effects! The bloody horror of this record is positively sinister. You will hate yourself if you miss it! In The Red is not legally responsible for death caused by heart failure or fright as a result of listening to Halloween Record w/ Special Effects. In other words, this record is not for sissies.

ABOVE GROUND - 'GONE AIWA'

Formats
  • SB150 - LP
    655030115011
Details

Above Ground was a fleeting yet no less important piece in the awesome DIY Christchurch scene of the early '80s. Together only for a short period in 1983, the band was comprised of Bill Direen (Vacuum / Builders), Carol Direen, Maryrose Crook (Max Block / Renderers) and Stuart Page (Axemen). They combined a ubiquitous and detached Velvet Underground vibe and a smattering of early Modern Lovers keyboard angst with some kind of Sky Saxon / Seeds psychedelic mojo. Above Ground was a formidable outfit in their brief existence and deserve more than a mere footnote in the history of one of the most vibrant scenes to exist in the past 30 years. Gone Aiwa originally saw life as a limited-edition cassette made to order and sold to various shops and at the occasional gig. So unless you were there (and chances are, you weren't), it's a good bet this material will be fresh to your ears-though two tracks did see the light of day on the Direen / Builders retrospective CD, Max Quiz, released by Flying Nun in the mid '90s. Gone Aiwa the album is finally realized, and what a wonderful thing it is to behold. Just goes to show it's never too late.
