THE WHITE STRIPES - 'THE BIG THREE KILLED MY BABY / RED BOWLING BALL RUTH'

Formats
  • TMR117 - 7"
    N/A
Details

FOUR Classic White Stripes 45s reissued in one fell swoop...this is a reissue of the decade-plus out of print only single off the White Stripes self-titled debut album. The A-side is Jack White's tempered screed against the monopoly of American auto companies against the accented thud of Meg's pounding drums. The B-side "Red Bowling Ball Ruth" is exclusive to this single and overflows with AC/DC-inspired rock riffs. Re-mastered direct from the original analog masters!

THE WHITE STRIPES - 'LORD SEND ME AN ANGEL / YOU'RE PRETTY GOOD LOOKING FOR A GIRL (TRENDY AMERICAN REMIX)'

Formats
  • TMR118 - 7"
    N/A
Details

Another classic single from the White Stripes archives.. originally released as part of the White Stripes Japan-Australia-New Zealand "Three Island Tour" in October 2000, and now these songs are back in print for the first time in over a decade. The A-side is a cover of Blind Willie McTell's "Lord, Send Me an Angel" with parts of his classic "Ticket Agent" thrown into the mix for good measure. Pay attention to Jack White's update of the lyrics to reflect his own geographical location. The flipside is an Auto-Tuned (before they called it that) remix of "You're Pretty Good Looking" that's a peculiar novelty to say the least. Both tracks are re-mastered directly from the original master tape.

THE WHITE STRIPES - 'HELLO OPERATOR / JOLENE'

Formats
  • TMR067 - 7"
    N/A
Details

While a picture disc version of "Hello Operator" b/w "Jolene" was available in 2010 from Third Man's subscription-only series the Vault, the black vinyl, picture sleeve version is now available for all to buy and will be kept in print eternally. The sole single off of the Stripes sophomore "De Stijl" album, "Hello Operator" was the first song John Peel ever played by the band. If that wasn't enough, the B-side showcases the band's cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene" a long-time fan favorite the studio version only ever available on this single.

MASTER MUSICIANS OF JAJOUKA - 'THE PRIMAL ENERGY THAT IS THE MUSIC AND RITUAL OF JAJOUKA, MOROCCO'

Formats
  • SRS001 - LP
    655035007113
Details

In the Djebala foothills of the Rif Mountains in northern Morocco is the ancient village of Jajouka. For hundreds of years music has poured out of that village, music by the world's only "4000 year old rock band" (William Burroughs), the Master Musicians of Jajouka. For hundreds of years the Master Musicians were the musical group of choice for the princes of Morocco, but they were not heard outside their native soil. Fast forward to 1950, Morocco, free of French and Spanish colonialism, is alive and the Beat Generation has discovered it. Author/composer Paul Bowles and writer/painter Brion Gysin hears the Master Musicians at a festival and have their minds blown. At different times both Bowles and Gysin make their way to the village of Jajouka, visits which result in some of the first recordings of the group. Eighteen years after his first encounter with the Master Musicians, Gysin takes Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones to Jajouka to experience the group's wild and wonderful trance music. Jones spends a month recording the group and releases the album Brian Jones Presents The Pipes of Pan at Jajouka. While the Jones record brought attention to the group, leading to associations with musician/legend Ornette Coleman and writer Robert Palmer, Jones treated the music with special effects. In 1972, Joel Rubiner made his way to Jajouka to do fresh recordings of the group. He knew that there was an audience for the unfiltered sounds of the Master Musicians of Jajouka and spends the summer with a tape machine and the musicians. Jams formed into songs, Rubiner had tapes that music freaks would die for. Hypnotic, pulsing, energetic, and discordant - the Rubiner recordings needed to be released. In 1974, Adelphi Records took a chance on the Master Musicians and released The Primal Energy That Is The Music And Ritual Of Jajouka, Morocco. When the album was released on CD, it netted the All Music Guide's Best of Genre award. Out of print on vinyl for over twenty years, The Primal Energy... makes a return on Sol Re Sol Records (a spin-off of avant-rock label S.S. Records). Sol Re Sol's repressing of this classic album contains the music of the original (remastered by John Golden), plus the original liner notes by Robert Palmer. The packaging however is something new - housed in a gatefold sleeve, it includes a new cover with little seen Rubiner photographs from the time the album was recorded. The recordings and photographs have been fully licensed. The group's publishing royalties have been paid. No one is getting exploited in order to return this wonderful music to vinyl. Fans of Sublime Frequencies, Mississippi Records, the Nonesuch Explorer series, Ocura Records, and the Ethnic Folkways series will dig this release.

THE STRANGE - 'FLIES / NO FUN'

Formats
  • ELI021 - 7"
    N/A
Details

RELEASE DATE IS ACTUALLY 19TH DECEMBER...WE WILL SHIP THESE THE WEEK BEGINNING 12TH DECEMBER: Born into a house of music, brothers Sam and Elias Hartley, as small children were forced to listen to classic vinyl. By rights, they should have rebelled and become accountants, or worse still liked heavy metal. At home, drum kits, guitars and amps were part of the furniture and by the age of 12 their 1st rock & roll band more or less formed itself. Sam found his stride and started writing brilliantly crafted songs in the Northern grit tradition. 'If love is the drug, you should see our back streets' 'Like a hung pig in the butcher's clutches' . Joined by Matt Seel on Guitar and Tyler Hanley on drums, they already have a coach filling, venue packing following. New label to forte, hand letter printed generic sleeves, runs of 500..

BRAIN F# - 'SLEEP ROUGH'

Formats
  • SSR11 - LP
Details

Really pleased to be working with Static Shock Records on some distribution, their first LP releaase is by Brain F#: The first two singles from North Carolina, USA's Brain F≠ left a lot of people scratching their heads: Is it garage? Is it hardcore? (It's definitely punk.) How did they write such catchy riffs? How do you pronounce "F≠?" Brain F≠'s debut long player, Sleep Rough, will force you to ponder those same questions and may breed even more (and we mean that in the best way possible). Everything has been amped up for this release... the hard stuff is harder, the catchy stuff is catchier (oh, is it catchy!), and the weird stuff is weirder. There's no need for band comparisons, but if you're into that sort of thing then imagine the SAINTS' minds in TEENGENERATE and the AVENGERS' bodies sent to a dystopian future. Really, though, this sounds like the year 2011; if you like huge guitars, endless vocal hooks, and a turbo-charged rhythm section (you do), then you need to hear this record. A download code is included. Highly recommended...

"This rules. I feel like this band used to be a two-piece? Well they aren't anymore, and the sound is less claustrophobic and total - more digestable. I can't decide what I prefer... I sort of like the stripped down attack of the 7"s. They used to remind me of a less downer/more garage-ier GUN OUTFIT mixed with this old Olympia band PLASTIQUE (that Sarah Utter used to be in, see the song "The K.I.L.L." for further reference). A million squirrely riffs and hooks crammed into each song, a band that sounds consumed by what it does but also sorta indifferent... It's got a garage-y swagger but it's not really garage, like the TYRADES on ludes? Watching the TYRADES while you're on ludes then starting a band?! Bad reviewer alert! Someone kill me! It's got the relenentless attack of the early WIPERS 7"s ("No Solution" and "Does It Hurt"), but it's not really that either, more all over the place. In short, this is punk rock. It's good and imaginiative and off kilter and somehow sounds bored and aggro, with male/female vocals. I can imagine this appealing to fans of the VICIOUS, people looking for a modern day Dangerhouse Records, it's just so relentless. (LG)"
