Kim Salmon (Scientists,/Beasts of Bourbon/'Grunge' inventor) Michael Stranges (Morning After Girls/Ripe) team up as 'Precious Jules' to create punk mayhem! Precious Jules' debut album is 11 slices of glam, garage, punk and pop in the tradition of Ramones, NY Dolls, T-Rex and Bowie. Their debut album, Precious Jules plays up to, and scrutinizes the notions of rock 'n' roll that have been distilled since its early days. The tracklist - 'Cheap N Nasty', 'You're a Backlash', 'Pearls Before Swine' and ' The Urban Swamp' ? alone tells you where these guys are going and where they've been - Punk, Glam and Rock 'n' Roll filtered through the post modern nineties and naughties and brought up to the minute by a couple of master-pop theoreticians THAT is Precious Jules. Having been repeatedly invited by various international touring artists to fill their support spots, Kim Salmon tired of playing alone and eventually asking producer friend Mike Stranges to accompany him on the drums. The pair of them would rock out on punk back catalogue and standards adding their own newies with each successive show. The duo eventually tracked 9 songs and it was clear from the results that a suitable moniker was needed. Given that they'd just recorded 'Cheap 'n' Nasty' by Kim's 1977 Perth Punk outfit The Cheap Nasties it wasn't difficult to come up with something opposite yet similar and Precious Jules came into being. Precious Jules have carefully cut, added to and indeed 'polished' their collection of gems. They may well move onto some other unlikely genre in the future but for this album, P.J.s have got something to prove - that even though there are just two of them, their rock is the hardest. Diamond hard in fact! LP RELEASE DATE IS ACTUALLY MARCH 5TH....

ED LAURIE - 'CATHEDRAL'

Formats
  • MOON103CD - CD

Details

CATHEDRAL' Ed Laurie's new album reveals the singer/writer, alongside his band, in singular mind: largely unrehearsed, improvised, few takes, no click-track ... the result is a raw, emotional record, and far removed from anything produced today. With a nominal budget Ed and co-producer Richard Neuberg headed to the North Italy to record this 3rd record with Ed's preferred band. Over one week in the heat of June they recorded unrehearsed, with no click track, improvising sections and relying on instinct above anything else ? a few takes and out. Largely indebted to impressionistic works such as Astral Weeks and Paris, Texas this album is due for release in Europe early 2012 and in the UK through Ed's own label Moonpainter. More release details to follow.

EXPENSIVE LOOKS - 'DARK MATTERS'

Alec Feld grew up in New York on a steady diet of Chicago house, disco, old Motown stuff and a smattering of his parents' psych records, as well as "trashy '90s dance." As a kid, he didn't really know how any of the songs were created, or that sampling was even a thing that people did-but he wanted to be part of it, so he taught himself to DJ. From there, he began to produce. Feld has been surrounded by electronic music his entire life, but with no blueprint for how to make what he wanted to hear, he figured it out on his own. "I became sick and tired of the notion that there are right and wrong ways to create and be creative," he says. Dark Matters is his debut LP as Expensive Looks. It flows continuously across nine tracks, touching on elements of all the music he grew up on: hypnotic house, textured minimalism, and the gorgeous moment of musical epiphany that happens when a beat drops out and all that's left is the aural equivalent of taking a deep breath and staring at the stars. It's a dance record with the sort of scrappy, open heart that can only come from someone like Feld. Expensive Looks is all encompassing, it draws from all genres without border, pulling everything into one warped but pointed mass. "Dark Matters comes into play as confusion and constant bipolar shifts all for the pursuit of happiness," Feld says. "I kill for euphoria and use it as a venue to get that polar-shifting depressive state across. This isn't about me not being happy, it's more about my frustration with the pursuit of happiness. I'm also kind of a space nut. There is little logic behind what 'dark matter' is and how it works." Dark Matters feels like the beginning of something for Feld. It's a survey of what it means to spend your whole life trying to figure out what you want from music without any guidelines. "Smashing keys turned into sequencing and sampling," says Feld. "I have no creative process. I don't write songs and I don't know what I want. I've narrowed down what Expensive Looks represents, taught myself a skill set previously non-existent in my mind and engaged myself in something that was once a fantasy." Dark Matters is a strange record, but it's also familiar. A summation of a sound or mood, and a fantastic beginning point for what will come next for Expensive Looks.

CHRIS ROBINSON BROTHERHOOD - 'S/T'

Formats

Details

LAST COPIES! You can go home again but you have to do some hard traveling first. THE CHRIS ROBINSON BROTHERHOOD proves it on their debut recording, two live tracks steeped in influence and respectful of the past, yet with a finger pointed straight toward the wide open future. This is the first release from The Chris Robinson Brotherhood, CHRIS ROBINSON's (BLACK CROWES) new band that traveled all of 2011 crafting its unmistakable cosmic soul, boogie and heady medicine on the open roads of America. It all started with a West Coast tour last spring and finishes the year with a four-night run at San Francisco's historic Great American Music Hall in December. "Vibration & Light Suite" brings to mind the '70s of the South, layered and handcrafted with chunky keyboards, syrupy guitar solos and inspired vocal harmonies. "Last Place That Love Lives" is as sad as a weeping willow, drenched in soul and anchored by the ache in Robinson's voice, weathered and husky and his alone. The Chris Robinson Brotherhood train has left the station and its loving travelers are jumping on board at all stops across the old weird and new freaky America. Drop the needle on this new Spiritual Pajamas limited-edition 10-inch single and hear the sound of one of the best new live bands in the land spreading its gloriously glad tidings. Debut release from BLACK CROWES lead singer's new band, limited to 1,000 copies.

MIKAL CRONIN - 'TIDE'

Formats

Details

The San Francisco scene keeps producing serious psychedelic clack 'n' burble and Mikal Cronin is the latest. Everyone loved the fuzzed-out Fading Yellow pop-psych he delivered on his debut album, and Tide shows him just getting better at it. Good luck getting the knee-buckling guitar hook and woozy falsetto chorus of the title track out of your head. The flip might even be better-"You Gotta Have Someone" is a sweet, swirly collision of Ride and The Byrds. Limited to 500 copies. we get a handful, will share them out...

THE DOOZER - 'KEEP IT TOGETHER'

Formats
  • WOODSIST055 - LP
Details

Keep It Together is the fourth full-length album from the Fenlands shadow puppet master The Doozer. Relocating to a village hall, little-theatre-style, he sets the task with a cast of eleven players dipping in and out, old Mrs. Mallows holding the keys. Previous albums are primarily lonesome affairs, so this group activity holds sway on the album's all-enveloping sound. Chords are the name of the game, and it's certainly got them! You hear guitars, bass, piano and drums; slipping in to lift those harmonies, a string quartet and horns?. Is that a tuba from the Salvation Army, you say? Yeah it is, and salvation is at hand. Just let it come down from the "Aluminum Dome." Perhaps you know what the weather's like here, but if you don't, take some advice from "Fen Drayton." Or, if you're in doubt about what flowers to get your girl, then check out "Fold Up Chair." Are you undecided on your God? That's "Oh Unbelievers!" But none of it's good advice, it's just a crack at the seam. First Woodsist full-length from UK artist is a group affair. Limited to 500 copies

?A recent show that blew all attending asses out of the water was
a short gig by a Cambridge, UK, duo known as The Doozer. The
Doozer actually seems to be one guy, and his playing partner is
called Ben, but never you mind. Anyway, they have a new LP
out on Siltbreeze called Great Explorers and it is a gas and a
pleasure of great dimensions. The lazy man?s way to review it
to call it a bridge between Syd B and Chris Knox, carrying all
the weird damage and superb left field pop motion that implies.?

GOLDEN CALVES - 'COLLECTION: MONEY BAND + CENTURY BAND'

Formats
  • WOODSIST056 - 2xLPs

Details

"It was really all about The Godz, Jandek, The Shadow Ring, Strapping Fieldhands, Swell Maps and Tower Recordings. Beyond these, I had only heard the 'classic' and most available free jazz, krautrock and noise albums. I was a long way from, say, the second Comus album or Charles Gayle. But this music changed my life. It was a record store owner named Eric Mc- Carthy and a man who needs no introduction to anyone reading these notes, Matt Valentine, who taught me that there was a world beyond Dischord, Vermiform and Ebullition. I went to college, met hip people, and got a job at both the local record store and the college radio station. I was taking drugs. I bought a four track and began emulating my heroes. I called the project Golden Calves. I was eighteen years old.... "In hindsight, I like to think that the noise scene liked us and responded so positively to us because, in our own na?ve way, we were subverting a very rigid paradigm. Touring with noise bands and moving in experimental circles but playing proper 'songs' is what made us weird. It was an exciting, unforgettable time. "These are not perfect records. Perhaps worse than so-called 'na?ve art' is 'only-marginally-informed art' and that's what this is. I should have let my talents marinate for a while before rushing out records that now sound to me like thinly-veiled love letters to Siltbreeze. But fuck it, man. I was hopelessly arrogant then and remain so today. Why else would I greenlight this fucking thing?" -James Jackson Toth, Lexington, KY, Summer 2010. Fans of Wooden Wand take note..

T.I.T.S. - 'THE GIRLS'

Formats
  • TITS01 - LP

Details

The third record from San Francisco's T.I.T.S.-WENDY FARINA, ABBEY KERRINS, KIM WEST, and MARY ELIZABETH YARBROUGH-following releases on Upset The Rhythm). Recorded at Lucky Cat Studios with PHIL MANLEY, The Girls find the group adding melodic guitar riffs and fast, complex rhythms to their multifaceted sonic landscape. T.I.T.S. draw from a wide range of experiences in music and art including, DEATH SENTENCE: PANDA!, MEOW MEOW AND THE MEOW MEOWS, TOWEL, CONDOR, and CRACK WAR, but now? This Is Their Sound. T.I.T.S are four ladies from San Francisco known singularly as Kim West, Abbey Kerins, Mary Elizabeth Yarbrough and Wendy Farina. Their name is a "revolving" acronym, with one of the finer ones being Technicolor Inner Troll Syndrome. The quartet ply their trade in a kind of witchy, experimental doom-laden pop, which could easily evoke reminiscences as diverse as Sabbath, The Shop Assistants, Boris, or Christian Death with some Terry Riley/Eno repetition added for good measure. Pressed on two-color vinyl in an edition of 500 copies.
