The B.E.F. return with a shape-shifting prog-rock indietronica record. March 26th will see the return of The British Expeditionary Force with their highly anticipated next installment on Erased Tapes Records, entitled 'Chapter Two: Konstellation Neu'. The British Expeditionary Force, short The B.E.F., was formed in 2007 by Northerners Aid Burrows, Justin Lockey and his brother James Lockey. Whilst their trademark indie-electronica marriage 'Chapter One: A Long Way From Home' was solely created via email, the long-awaited sequel 'Chapter Two: Konstellation Neu' was recorded in one room, with two drummers and mad professors on synthesisers contributing to an even broader sonic palette. A sound that producer and ex-Yourcodenameis:milo mastermind Justin Lockey likes to describe as 'prog rock, innit'. 'The tactic we've used is the 'more' method. More sounds, more layers, more people. More face to face, more angles, more songs. If we've done our sums right, it should total more than the individual pieces', explains singer Aid Burrows. Press: 'This album is inspired by late night explorations and arguments, the random inputs of the internet, and some slippery tip of the tongue ideas that can't completely be grasped or nailed like the tenacious whack-a-moles', adds Justin Lockey. So here we are. It's the year 2012. And it's time to 'Roll on Chapter Two...'(NME) 'A more confident, expansive affair. Sitting somewhere in between prog, electronics and more traditional songwriting fare 'Chapter Two: Konstellation Neu' is a definite step forward from the band' ? Clash

THE MALLARD - 'YES ON BLOOD'

Formats
  • CF011 - LP
    N/A
Details

THE MALLARD are an inside-out-echo-laser-garage-psych-rock trio from San Francisco. Their home fried songs harness the naked abandon of '60s punk (think earliest Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd), but inject the form with a deranged spirit all their own. Close attention to texture and dynamics allow the band to explore unusual terrain-to grant access into unexpected realms of beauty and terror... with dessert. GREER MCGETTRICK (guitar/vocals/drums) and DYLAN TIDYMAN-JONES (drums/keys/vocals) met playing music in Fresno, California, and later moved independently to San Francisco. McGettrick helmed the Mallard through several incarnations-and self-recorded an initial eight-song cassette tape-before inviting Tidyman-Jones to play drums with her in early 2011. Multi-instrumentalist DYLAN EDRICH (bass/guitar) came aboard in the autumn of '11, filling out the low end of the sonic spectrum and heightening the energetic synchronicity of the ensemble. The Mallard perform regularly in San Francisco (playing shows with Thee Oh Sees, Blasted Canyons, The Burnt Ones, and many others). Hold onto your ear-holes.

TOM JAMES SCOTT - 'CRYSTAL'

Formats
  • CAR004 - LP
    N/A
Details

Crystal is the third release and first vinyl LP outing by composer Tom James Scott. Sonically, the pieces presented on Crystal contrast as structures of space and density, dividing and inhabiting the space of the format. While Scott's previous releases used acoustic instrumentation to explore aspects of melodic form and song structure, 'Crystal' sees a shift towards a more electronic means of sound production. 'Skire' - the opening track - employs a repeating musical phrase which rests upon and mimics the rhythms of the sea sounds captured along the shores surrounding Scott's childhood home on Walney Island. Through the sweeping saccharine phrases and looming dissonance of 'Lown', the two tracks together play the alchemist in inventing and reviving lost thoughts. The counter point is the singular track, Crystal. Akin to the title, it is a dense and transparent form in which elevating tones and cyclical melody strengthen and fragment throughout its course, creating swathes of luminous texture that shift the focus to new and imagined harmonic patterns. Although the paced, progressive build in Tom's work is apparent - the remarkable engine of the music is how the strands separate and unravel with duration, inviting the listener to engage and deconstruct their form rather than to simply observe them being built. The result of which is a record of candid disorientation and ecstatic effect.
