BLASTED CANYONS - '2ND PLACE'

Details

BLASTED CANYONS-HEATHER FEDEWA, ADAM FINKEN and MATT JONES-return with their second release for Castle Face. Heather and Matt initially started the band to play an art opening at MoMa which ended with everyone getting kicked out. Matt met Adam handing out mushrooms on the 4th of July and together they convinced a crew of similarly fucked up strangers to light fireworks off the roof. Together, they round robin instruments and crush huge riffs, singalongs, caveman drums, and gooey synthesisers into thrashy wizard rock for weirdos that dig dorky shit but aren't total dorks about it. Six songs. Pressed on one-sided vinyl with a lazer etching onthe B-side. Artwork by JOE ROBERTS. Includes a download.

CIAN NUGENT - 'GRASS ABOVE MY HEAD'

Formats
  • VHF130 - 7"

Details

Cian Nugent's lovely follow-up to 2011's much acclaimed Doubles album presents two short solo acoustic turns-one original, and one Black Flag cover. "Grass Above My Head" is a wistful, fingerpicked, South Dublin coastal lovesick blues. In contrast to the two ambitiously complex side-long tracks on Doubles, "Grass" is simple and elegant, full of just-so chord changes that make all the right references to the genre classics. In contrast, the truly unusual assault on Black Flag's "My War" is a knot of edgy picking, starting with an abstracted take on Greg Ginn's naggingly dissonant intro and rapidly moving into a hypnotic variant that suggests an entirely different kind of blues than the A-side. Truly one of the weirdest (and best) Flag covers of all time.

It is the late 1970s and recently politicized filmmaker and musician ED MONTGOMERY makes his way from San Francisco to New York City. His thought is to find like-minded musicians in order to create a politically-infused, free jazz-inspired performance ensemble. He starts playing in Latin groups and takes part in jam sessions at Bobo Shaw's LaMama space. He finally assembles a group of musicians and starts making some seriously funky and far-out music. In 1979, Montgomery meets ROBBIE MCCAULEY, a performer & playwrite (she'd later win an OBIE for her work), who proved to be the perfect front person for what became the SEDITION ENSEMBLE. But McCauley wasn't the only major talents in the group. BERN NIX of ORNETTE COLEMAN'S PRIME TIME and THE CONTORTIONS played guitar. MELVIN GIGGS of DEFUNKT, THE DECODING SOCIETY, and later the ROLLINS BAND was on bass. BEN BIERMAN played horns with Johnny Pacheco, Larry Harlow, Hector Lavoe and other Latin greats. BOB DE MEO drummed for Jackie Byard, Eddie Gale, and high life star Souliman Rogie. Together and with others, the Sedition Ensemble recorded their one and only album, Regeneration Report in Brooklyn, April 1981. Released on Mongomery's Context Music label, Regeneration Report got some notice, but not what it deserved. The music is a tough blend of funk, jazz, no wave, and Latin-very strong stuff that sounds as fresh today as it did in 1981. It was the lyrics that kept the Sedition Ensemble from a larger audience. Revolutionary words with absolutely no compromise, Montgomery and McCauley attack injustance and give an analysis of the world as stark it is true. Their message is sadly still relevant today. A private pressing when independent labels had weak distribution, Regeneration Report never sold a lot of records. Few copies made it off the East Coast. Nowadays, original copies fetch good money in collectors' circles. We at Sol Re Sol Record are proud to reissue this great LP. The vinyl has been remastered by JOHN GOLDEN and is housed in an old style tip-on sleeve and includes liner notes by band founder Ed Montgomery. The CD comes in a digipak.

Hailing from Tennessee, Cheap Time has been around in one incarnation or another since 2006. The nucleus has always been Jeffrey Novak, who writes and sings in addition to playing guitar and keyboards. The band began with members of the band Be Your Own Pet rounding out the lineup-theirs was a sound of a teen punk band with more attitude than musicianship, owing more than a little to early Redd Kross. By the time Cheap Time recorded their debut album, the personnel had changed drastically and, in addition to improved musicianship, Novak brought in influences of '70s glam and power pop acts like Sparks and The Quick. The band followed this with more lineup shuffles and a sophomore album, Fantastic Explanations (and Similar Situations), that was darker, moodier and more complex than its predecessor. Despite the many changes, however, Cheap Time has always been a sum of its parts. A quintessential ingredient is the low-fi bombast with which they scuzz up their otherwise lightweight brand of simplified 1970s glam punk, packing an impressive amount of adolescent snottiness into two-minute blasts of sound with both precision and melody. Cheap Time are now back with their third and by far strongest record to date. Recorded in Novak's new home studio, Wallpaper Music distills perfectly all the phases through which the band has passed to date. Retaining both the punk moves and pop-damaged glam jams, the band delivers their most realized, cohesive record yet. Songs like "More Cigarettes" and "Another Time" are Aussie-esque punkers in a Saints-like vein, while "Underneath the Fruit Flies" shows that Novak has found a happy medium between his punk tendencies and his desire to experiment. This latest installment will satisfy anyone who has been keeping track of this band's trajectory and make them look forward to what might come next.
