Around since 1999, The Intelligence has to date released seven singles, five split singles, two EPs, seven albums and have made eight compilation appearances. They join the ranks of hyper-prolific artists themselves. As with their previous album, Males from 2010, they returned to The Hangar with Chris Woodhouse to record, and they continue to jettison their deliberately blown-out, lo-fi recording approach for a much clearer sound. Not that there's any loss of intensity. The band's scrambling postpunk guitars, dry-as-a-bone drums and laconically abstract verses are all here, viewed through an unusually clear lens. If one didn't have the songs or the chops, this sort of thing could reveal weakness but here it highlights their knack for catchy songs that incorporate pop hooks, metronomically repetitive guitar riffs, and new wavey synth moves. For those who haven't been paying attention, The Intelligence are the brainchild of Lars Finberg (formerly of A-Frames, currently of Thee Oh Sees and Wounded Lion). Initially a studio project in which Finberg played all instruments on his home recordings, the band soon began to play live and tour, while the releases volleyed between solo and ensemble recordings. On Everybody's Got It Easy But Me, Finberg goes for a mixed approach. Having recently relocated to Los Angeles, he assembled an LA lineup of the band-but since he still spends time in his original home base of Seattle, he has retained a separate lineup in that city as well. For this new album, he uses them both?and does some songs all by himself. He also invited a number of guests to come in and add to it. The result is the most varied yet cohesive Intelligence album to date. like Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall in the impossible-to-stay-on-top-of department. That said, like the aforementioned artists, with each release The Intelligence continues to evolve, grow artistically and top themselves. And, yes, you do need to keep up with all the releases. With Everybody's Got It Easy But Me, The Intelligence do indeed top themselves. As with their previous album, Males from 2010, they returned to The Hangar with Chris Woodhouse to record, and they continue to jettison their deliberately blown-out, lo-fi recording approach for a much clearer sound. White Manna plays space rock using a scorched-earth policy. The Arcata, California, quartet may telegraph where they're coming from and where they're going to take you with their track titles, but knowing the itinerary doesn't dampen the thrill of their excursion into stellar depths. Opening track "Acid Head" is not false advertising. It begins with an amiable boogie-rock amble before tumescing into stentorian, Loop-like riffing. You know that you can count on White Manna enveloping your head in the Asheton brothers' genius string thuggery and convulsing you with the primordial throb harnessed by the Stooges (and, later, Hawkwind), before sonic irony was invented. For most of White Manna, the group focuses on mantric riffs that accelerate into speed-freak, headbanging frenzies. But on "Don't Gun Us Down," they throw a changeup, setting the science-fictional scene with billowing solar winds before shifting into a mantric cruiser over which a wah-wah guitar articulates a hedonist manifesto-something along the lines of "fire all of your guns at once and explode into space." White Manna don't dazzle with eclecticism; instead, they're monomaniacs with the irrepressible ability to soar out of the mundane and into the unknown via tried-and-true methods upgraded to modern 21st century specs. MUGSTAR - 'AD MARGINEUM OST W/ DVD'

Formats
  • AGIT014 - LP / DVD
    N/A
Details

AFTER MUCH PRODCUTION HASSLE, ITS FINALLY HERE.....Ad Marginem began life as a collaboration between filmmaker Liam Yates and Mugstar, created outside a traditional framework whereby a filmscore is added to a completed film. Members of the band were equal partners in writing, directing, editing as well as acting; the on screen drama was shaped to complement the musical form. Ad Marginem is both tightly controlled and claustrophobic.; though is not without a supersonic, dark and dense explosiveness, echoing Slint and Pink Floyd. Visually, the stark black and white photography of the cover pays homage to classic world cinema. The entire project (interiors and exteriors) was filmed within a stone's throw of the coast and contrasts post-industrial urban landscapes with some of the most beautiful Merseyside locations: the Sefton coast of Liverpool Bay and Hilbre Island, where the Dee Estuary meets the Irish Sea. A tale of obsession and betrayal, it takes as a theme physical and social marginality: a cult on the margins of society, a man on the margins of the cult. In case you've not heard of them before, Mugstar ((Peter Smyth - Guitar, Keyboards, Vocals; Neil Murphy - Guitar, Flute, Viola; Jason Stoll - Bass, Saxophone; Steve Ashton - Drums, Percussion)) are an instrumental rock band all the way from Liverpool, influenced by krautrock, Pink Floyd, Neu!, Sonic Youth and Oneida. 500 COPIES ONLY. LP AND DVD
