It's morning in Detroit: Organic cafes are sprouting up where liquor stores once dominated the landscape, cycle lanes now line even the most impassable roadways, and an army of aimless (white) youth, the shock troops of gentrification, are living out their wild west fantasies in maximum comfort and self-satisfaction. The names of their wifi networks tell the story: "homesteader," "eastside settler," "landgrabba." They come for a reason: a cheap practice space in other people's misery. True to their contrarian instincts, Tyvek won't give any quarter to the well heeled (and no doubt well intentioned) drum circle that has invaded their hometown, but they also can't help but feel a certain optimism. Their third album, On Triple Beams, picks up where the blistering proto-hardcore of the Nothing Fits record leaves off, but doesn't tarry long in familiar zones. The melodies open up into a much more spacious musical headspace, channeling unexpected positivity on tracks like "Wayne County Roads," "Say Yeah" and "Returns." Produced by Fred Thomas, On Triple Beams is hard and direct but it doesn't pummel. Likewise, the lyrics ain't pedantic. Searing punk rock is still the order of the day, and the tunes are just bangin'. And in case there's any doubt: these are tunes in a major way-the songwriting chops are on this album are completely out of place in the 2012 bumper crop of plastic platters. Welcome to the strange path that Tyvek has trod for the past eight years: for every step forward, they take two steps to the side for good measure. This trip won't be spoiled by the crass opportunism of the Nu-Detroiters: they have to keep it real. Sometimes the new jacks just gotta get put in check, and obviously Mommy and Daddy weren't ever going to do it. In the midst of so much change, Tyvek is energized by the chaos of a city in flux, the crucial moments that make up everyday life, and the unfiltered reality of sensory experiences. Hear the sound and jump all around. ? Third album from forward-thinking Detroit punk ensemble Produced by Fred Thomas (of Saturday Looks Good to Me, Swimsuit, etc.) ? BIG NATURALS - 'S/T'

Formats
  • GT001 - LP
    N/A
Details

A two piece psych rock, punk noise band, Bristol based Big Naturals are comprised of Gareth Turner on bass and Jesse Webb on drums. This is their long awaited debut LP, a melting pot of mesmerizing grooves, combined with rabid punk energy and psychedelic noise scapes. Self titled, self recorded and self released on their own Greasy Trucker label. To trace the genesis of one of Bristol's most startling attention bands, one must begin at the circle in the square, Kings Square, Stokes Croft. The dark cavernous dwelling of epic Bristol band, the HEads, to which Gareth had, for many a year, acted as consort and advisor to, as both a studio engineer and general band oracle. The Heads and Big Naturals recorded together under the name "Rituals" and released 3 limited CDRs of their wild collaborations. From this gruelling, primeval phase of sonic initiation, the Big Naturals emerged, now fully formed and fortified with their own musical vision. Many live shows followed, the bands' live set now a high energy onslaught of amped up fury, with startled onlookers describing the barrage as both hypnotic and pulverising. Utilising no less than three amp stacks for bass guitar and incorporating drones, space echo, phasers, mammoth thundering drums and some of the lairiest low end distortion to be heard currently in the UK, add some dememnted vocal outbursts and thats their sound... This is their 13 track debut LP, vinyl only, this is the second pressing of 200 copies on white vinyl, and comes in a "crass styled" wrap around, poster collage sleeve... fans of the Heads, Jello Biafra, NoMeansNo,and Skin Graft records take NOTE!

Hard to believe our planet had not yet been graced with Nathan Bowles solo recordings until now, but such is the case. After years of playing in celebrated ensembles, touring the world, and honing his skill on a host of instruments, Bowles unveils his first solo effort: A Bottle, A Buckeye. The spacious, rollicking, meditative, and above all powerful record bridges the methods and constructs of his two most notable groups ? The Black Twig Pickers (old-time) and Pelt (outer limits) ? while inhabiting a space all its own. Armed only with a 5-string openback banjo (built by Nathan's neighbor Greg Galbreath at the Buckeye Banjos workshop) and a bottle of Elmer T. Lee, Bowles recorded and mixed the record with Jason Meagher at Black Dirt Studio over two days in December 2011. Bowles' recent focus on the instrument's possibilities is on full display here; bowed & drummed textures, clawhammer boogie, and banjo soli sidewinding are all explored. With a mixture of traditional folk tunes, original compositions, and reinterpretations of material from players who've passed on, A Bottle, A Buckeye is a varied ride with a serious player at the helm. ? LP includes gratis download -------------------------------------------------------------------- Nathan Bowles is a musician & teacher living in the mountains of southwestern Virginia. He and his bandmates in the Black Twig Pickers steep themselves in local traditions of Appalachian folk music and dance. In his other projects, including Pelt and Pigeons, he focuses on the various sonic possibilities inherent in struck and bowed percussion -- metal, wood, skin, or otherwise. When playing by his lonesome, he prefers either minimal & hyper-nuanced percussive drone or tranced-out solo clawhammer banjo. Bowles has also famously backed Jack Rose and Charlie Parr on records and on stage.
