EAT SKULL - 'III'

Formats
  • WOODSIST065 - LP
    655035036519
Details

While you were out kicking an empty Sparks cup around SXSW, world class musical talents Eat Skull were busy creating their third opus, entitled III, on a fever train between states, cities, community colleges and jails. Nearly four days or four years in the making (depending on who you ask), III is a more psychedelic and perfectly circular outing then their previous classics of paranoid ecstasy Wild and Inside and Sick to Death. Somewhere in between the subatomic joy of Primal Scream's "Keep Your Dreams" and the desperate loneliness of Same Place the Fly Got Smashed-era Guided By Voices lies the weird and wonderful world of III. Throw a dash of Iron Maiden's Wasted Years in the cauldron, stir and dip a cigarette in it to smoke. This is music to drink to, die to, fall in love to and quit your job to. Drive to Alaska. Fuck it. ? Third album from Portland noise-pop band and their first since 2009's Wild and Inside on Siltbreeze ? Includes free digital download coupon

?Eat Skull remains the scuzziest of all [contemporary noise-pop bands,
and] one of the most intriguing acts operating in this style?. [T]hey?re
more capable of using noise as a tool, another instrument, rather than
relying on it as the sole foundation for their material... [and] strike a fine
balance between 1960s garage-rock and the sugariness of early Flying
Nun acts the Clean and the Chills, adding a uniquely crusty, folksier quality
that lends the songs distinctiveness?. Eat Skull daringly ventures into
a stretch of haunted Americana here and manages to pull it off; they wind
up sounding like a spookier version of fellow lo-fi crusties Woods.?
?Pitchfork
?Portland?s Eat Skull straddles the noise / pop divide with more abandon
than most other musicians currently spewing jams into tape recorders.
But it?s probably misleading to presume this balance as calculated: it
seems that neither we nor they know which way their mutant pop is going
to fall?maybe jangly, maybe totally putrid punk? there?s also a strange,
muffled grandeur to their pop.? ?Tiny Mix Tapes

CALIFORNIA X - 'S/T'

Formats
  • DG63 - LP

Details

***Received a 7.8 rating from Pitchfork. In less than a year, Amherst trio CALIFORNIA X have emerged from basements and punk practice spaces of Massachusetts as one of the tightest new garage punk bands in the Northeast, teetering between various pockets of the punk spectrum-drawing influence from the worlds of noisy '80s Western Mass rock, fuzzy '90s garage pop, and classic post-hardcore SST sounds. Fronted by main songwriter LEMMY GURTOWSKY, their debut LP for Don Giovanni follows one prior release, a double A-side single "Sucker" b/w "Mummy" out via the UK's Sound of Sweet Nothing label. From start to finish, the record's eight hook-heavy tracks of melodic guitar punk could all be singles: the noisy vox and huge grungy riffs on "Curse of the Nightmare"; the slower-burning head-banging pulse of "Pond Rot"; the shoegaze-inflicted fleshed-out melodies of "Lemmy's World." Songs like "Hot Hed" feels so essential you'll wonder how they're not actually from some long-lost punk tapes of the 1980s Western Mass. Appropriately, the band recorded the album in MA with JUSTIN PIZZOFERRATO, previously a collaborator with Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr.-and though California X sound like they could have been contemporaries with those bands, they're also carving out their own space in a lineage of their hometown's punk history. NME have touted this as one of the "biggies" of the year?turn it up!!!

HANK IV - 'DEPRAVITY'S RAINBOW'

Formats
  • HOLY1989 - 7"
    N/A
Details

Recorded in a lacerating hi-fidelity previously unheard on their other 7-inch singles, Depravity's Rainbow is something of an alternate-universe rock 'n' roll pop hit vista for Hank IV. But these songs aren't any sort of gauzy or hazy faux-California summer jams-this is some straightup TV-MA-LSV shit and the screen's inside your eyelids. "Depravity's Rainbow" is a mid-tempo self-loather about moral relativism that grinds three different gears before finally achieving escape velocity for its pummeling climax. Feel free to shout along with the chorus and / or cry along to the verses the next time the crushing weight of your misspent life keeps you awake in the small hours. The flip, "Your Mind Is a Disco," sports a propulsive skiffle-bounce beat, but lead vocalist Bob McDonald has worn concrete shoes to the dance. His mirrored ball of a brain spins, dazzles and ultimately explodes inside his skull, causing guitar feedback to leak from his ears as he screams the refrain over and over. ? New single from San Francisco band follows releases for Siltbreeze, S-S, Hook or Crook, Plastic Idol ? Recorded by Phil Manley (Trans Am) at Lucky Cat Studios in San Francisco ? Art by the renowned American painter and street artist Chris Johanson (Anti-Hero Skateboards, Beautiful Losers, Museum of Modern Art permanent collection) ? Edition of 300 with covers silkscreened by Idiot or Genius? ? "San Francisco is a town with a rich history of politically charged punk bands that aren't afraid to cry out against injustice and champion equality through their crude though effective music. Thankfully, Hank IV is not one of those bands." -Vice

GUIDED BY VOICES - 'DOWN BY THE RACETRACK'

Formats
  • GBVI28 - 7"
    N/A
Details

Welcome to the commencement of 2013's Guided By Voices recorded output. Please take your seats quickly. For those who slept through 2012, the Dayton, OH, rock legends released three hugely-acclaimed albums last year and toured throughout the United States of America, including Florida. Bandleader Robert Pollard also put out two solo albums, a couple issues of his collage-heavy zine Eat, as well as a "Best Of" record by his other old band Boston Spaceships, and conquered the moon, probably. Down by the Racetrack is Guided By Voices stretching out in a way not seen since early- to mid-'90s EPs like Get Out My Stations or Clown Prince of the Menthol Trailer. It's a particular kind of lo-fi weirdness, from the spooky background "aahs" on "Pictures of the Man" to the drunk piano bashing on "Standing in a Puddle of Flesh." The mix of wild, tossed-off vocals, raw guitar chug and skewed "Eleanor Rigby" / "See Emily Play" sweetness could only have originated from the Midwest-warped minds of Dayton's canniest rock warlocks. A total of 6 7"s will be released over the next three months?.limited edition..proper pop singles folks!!

Formats
  • GBVI29 - 7"

Details

"Flunky Minnows," the first single from the upcoming Guided By Voices long-player English Little League, is a classic Robert Pollard- penned power-pop gem, as catchy as anything in the band's canon. B-side "Jellypop Smiles," a reverb-heavy acoustic number with out-of-tune recorder, wouldn't sound out of place next to Bee Thousand's "Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory." Very Limited edition!!

RIO EN MEDIO - 'PEACE SEQUENCE'

Formats
  • WW1 - CD
    641444125821
Details

Peace Sequence is the third full-length from songwriter Danielle Stech-Homsy under the Rio en Medio moniker. Recorded and produced by Stech-Homsy herself in the New Mexico and California deserts, the album offers nine reveries on a borrowed Martin guitar, several of which feature veteran koto master Shoko Hikage. Also guesting on organs on two songs is psychedelic multi-instrumentalist Nathan Shineywater. Rio en Medio's debut album Bride of Dynamite was released on Gnomonsong in 2006, and she toured with Devendra Banhart across the US as main opening support, appearing at the Banhart-curated All Tomorrow's Parties in England. Stech-Homsy has toured the USA and internationally with such bands as CocoRosie and Brightblack Morning Light, and shared the stage with Michael "Snock" Hurley, Grizzly Bear, Vetiver, Vashti Bunyan and Diane Cluck. She was requested to perform at '60s folksier Linda Perhacs's first public performance in decades. Los Angeles's Manimal Vinyl label released the second Rio en Medio full-length, Frontier, in 2008. ? Third full-length album from New Mexicoborn musician draws on her subtler wiles ? Guest appearances by veteran kotoplayer Shoko Hikage and psychedelic multi-instrumentalist Nathan Shineywater (Brightblack Morning Light, Library of Sands) ? AL CISNEROS - 'DISMAS / VERSION'

Formats
  • SINAI001 - 7"
    N/A
Details

***"Bassist/vocalist for heavy music's most methodical and verbose purveyors of polysyllabic lyrics, OM, AL CISNEROS has just released a solo 7" on his own Sinai label. If you've immersed yourself in OM's latest mystical, mantric, metal-free works, God Is Good and the Afro-Arabic-leaning Advaitic Songs, 'Dismas' won't come as too much of a surprise. While the label copy implies that 'it could be a tribute to Alice Coltrane's World Galaxy album in the form of a reggae 45'-a truly exciting prospect-'Dismas' strikes me as more of a languorously tense strain of the sort of lysergic dub coming from WordSound artists like Scarab, Equations of Eternity, and Qaballah Steppers in the '90s. Whatever the case, Cisneros has created a real gem here. Various holy men intone god chatter ('The lord is the supreme reality/Om shanti shanti shanti,' etc.) over a sumptuous spread of resonant, sinuous bass peregrinations, vibraphone, cello (?), congas, and tablas. Everything is ergonomically optimal, precisely arrayed, and spiritually centered. The B-side, 'Version,' is slightly slower and more spacious."-Dave Segal (The Stranger). Packaged in white paper sleeves.
