VINYL NOW INSTOCK!! A whole new LP from TIM PRESLEY, will be sure to please fans of last year's Family Perfume Vol.1 + 2. Heavy on the warp, mellow to the yellow, with perhaps even more earworms this time around, shoe-strung together and laced with adenoidal whimsy as only Mr. Presley can pull off. I have cyclops vision now. But I'm not a giant. I changed my name and body only, and stabbed my social nous in the right ear. I still read fear but there are no police this year. I can repeat the same dream. I can let birds talk to me. I'm in jail. I have love and a whistle. I lay where the lotus lay and then spring the frozen flowers on any giving day. I apologize to those put in the trees, but I was gathering the Cyclops reap. In the span of 4 1/2 years. I've lived in two different apartments and have used three different rooms during this time. All in Echo Park, Los Angeles, CA, only a couple miles from one another. After the death of my father in 2008 I started writing and recording non-stop in these rooms. I can't say it was directly because of that trauma, but I think deep down it might have much to do about it. This record was initially going to be a collection of the many songs trapped between the 4 White Fence LP's. As i was putting that together, there were more coming. a better crop. i couldn't stop. So, instead of a retrospective i said "Fuck It". might as well use the most current songs of the bunch. For the exception of "Make Them Dinner At Our Shoes" which is from 2009." - Tim Presley

GRASS WIDOW - 'GRASS WIDOW'

Details

Back in print on the band's own label, Grass Widow's sophomore release initially came out on Captured Tracks in 2009 and followed close on the heels of their self-titled debut album on Make A Mess Records. The 12-inch EP features three original tracks plus a cover of the Urinals' classic "Black Hole." "A diamond in the late-'00s roughs, SF's Grass Widow is like a modern-day analogue to early Throwing Muses, Glass Eye, Salem 66, maybe even Scrawl-a band with ideas about structure and clarity that has bypassed much of the past few years of intentional grounding of aesthetics. Without necessarily bowing down to the concessions of defeat, there's a sense that these women have something bigger going on, sort of a unifying theory between sweet sugar pop and a little something more to chew on. Here's three great originals and a Urinals cover by a band which has fully awakened to its abilities. No obvious turns are taken in their songwriting, and the spaces in them are kept busy by a lot of interesting, cool-sounding things springing up from each corner. If nothing else, they have a melodic inventiveness that should keep everyone entertained, but there's more here, and it'll be exciting to hear what exactly that may be." -Still Single

XENIA RUBINOS - 'MAGIC TRIX'

On initial listen to Magic Trix, the first album by Brooklynite Xenia Rubinos, one might feel as though one is being tased (bro). Little compares to the sharp, thick spine of keyboard sound that shoots out from the very first moments. An oblique assemblage of uncommon rhythms, forceful singing and dance-'til-you-puke styles combine to make Magic Trix one of the most exciting debuts in years. Surprisingly, the record's aggressive sound is achieved without the use of guitars. Rubinos, with the assistance of drummer / sound magician Marco Buccelli, creates a dozen songs that bring to mind the adventurous spirit and whacked-out mentality found in the best moments of Rip, Rig and Panic, DNA and The Contortions. Rubinos expands on her Cuban, Puerto Rican and American roots, and while the songs shoot off to new stratospheres, they never lose the sense that the music is at its core two people banging on things, making a racket. It was such a racket that their home production of the album was often interrupted by paintings falling from the walls of their apartment as they recorded. Rubinos and Buccelli can also fully replicate the record live, thanks in part to the latter's makeshift "analogic distorted snare." In order to alter his snare sound, he circuits the drum through an array of reverb and distortion pedals, projecting the sound through an amp at his side. Rubinos's songs cover intimate topics of family and travel. "Help" is based on a family legend of a woman flown to the states from Puerto Rico in order to heal a dying man with her powers. She brought over her six sons and lived under a bridge until she was able to afford a roof. "Los Mangopaunos" is a fantasy about the origin of the mice with whom Rubinos shared her Gowanus apartment; it chronicles their independent tribal lives and their lineage from Marvin the Martian. Meanwhile, "Cafe Con Leche" and "Aurora De Mayo" are original takes on traditional songs that Rubinos learned in her childhood. Magic Trix takes all its diverse origins and combines them into an

HUMAN EYE - '4: INTO UNKNOWN'

People of Earth, take heed: The year is 2013 AD, and Timmy Vulgar has graced our squabbling kind by returning to terra-dwelling humanoids the intergalactic, transcendental cyber-organism that is the twitching Human Eye for a fourth revelation. Prepare, peopleoids, as the Human Eye casts its gaze Into Unknown. Over the course of 4: Into Unknown, the listener rides along rising and falling cascades of fuzz. Mindless twist-and-jive anthems entice, but ultimately abandon false friends in psychedelic realms while remote melodies tickle and torment the cerebellum. In many ways, 4 presents longtime fans with a reverent re-education in Human Eye's style, as it pulls influences from way back-the epochal decades of the 1960s and '70s, when groovin' was the law and the mind a nebulous thing. Full of Sabbath-esque sludge-bass, trash-incinerating guitars and blown-out organs, these songs convince any would-be afficionado that the throbbing heart of rock 'n' roll, Detroit City, while currently on life support, can still produce. Mystics, ancient astronauts, and other Human Eye zealots can look forward to witnessing the four-piece live, as appearances are predicted in hometowns across the United States in the latter half of 2013. So, set your radios to interstellar frequency, pick up the album and do not miss an opportunity to experience Human Eye electro-shock firsthand- as long as you prepare to be sent reeling beyond our universe, beyond what we can only claim to know. ? MX - 80 SOUND - 'HARD ATTACK'

Formats
  • SV013 - LP
    857176003133
  • SV013CD - CD
Details

Had to pick up some of these, a classic record from the 70s, reissued on Superior Viaduct: MX-80 Sound is one of the real oddities in American music. Their debut album, Hard Attack (released in the UK on Island Records), found little-to-no audience in the States upon its release in 1977, yet remains a key document of the mid-'70s proto-punk zeitgeist. Hailing from Bloomington, Indiana, MX-80 Sound was lead by guitarist Bruce Anderson and defies simple classification with relentless riffs, dual drummers and vocalist Rich Stim's absurdist prose and dizzying sax. Assimilating the avant-rock of Captain Beefheart and conjuring the ghosts of Albert Ayler, MX-80 Sound evokes what free jazz would sound like if born in Bloomington. As archivist Byron Coley writes, "Hard Attack has long been considered one of the great squirts of the Midwest underground's prog-punk tradition. Fellow travelers include Debris' Static Disposal, Pere Ubu's Modern Dance and Destroy All Monsters' 1974-1976, and what makes each of these fine gushers unique is that they were all created in virtual isolation. No one else in the neighborhood was creating anything akin to them." Superior Viaduct is honored to present Hard Attack's first-ever vinyl edition in the US. Mastered from the original analog tapes for the first time since 1977 and remixed by the band, this deluxe reissue will soon become the definitive version for longtime fans and newcomers alike. The singular and staggering innovation of MX-80 Sound still harkens to rock's future potential. ? First-time vinyl reissue, mastered from the original 1977 tapes ? Liner notes by Byron Coley ? Includes digital download card ? For fans of Pere Ubu, Television, Swans "If ever a band realized the potential of pre-punk 'underground' noise rock, MX-80 is it." -Trouser Press

MONITOR - 'S/T'

  • SV016CD - CD
    857176003966

An errant project of suburban Los Angeles art collective World Imitation Productions, Monitor was the sonic outlet of four young artists grappling with their terror and amazement in the convergence of the late 1970s punk scene and Southern California's consumerist decadence. As with the collective's visual artwork and events, Monitor blends archaic influences with modern technology into one of the era's most curious albums. Eerie synthesizer, menacing guitar leads and morose vocal chants make "In Terrae Interium" an evocative ballad of paranoia. "I Saw Dead Jim's Shade" showcases Monitor's idiosyncratic vocal interplay in a sinister tale of a stolen hand. When "Hair" required a tempo beyond Monitor's instrumental chops, the band appropriated The Meat Puppets to record the track for them. Acquainted at first through mail art, World Imitation found a kindred spirit in DEVO associate Ed Barger, who meticulously recorded this LP in 1980, burying the presence of shrieking cats, closing doors and tape loops deep in the mix. Monitor associated with the original Hollywood punk scene but often met with ambivalence for their incongruity in the face of the movement's increasingly codified appearance and sound. Loosely aligned with like-minded pioneers such as Nervous Gender, Human Hands, BPeople and NON, who together constituted the sub-scene known as the Associated Skull Bands, Monitor operated in its own space within a progressive, diverse musical milieu. Few groups so deftly encapsulate the existential dread and delight particular to Southern California's antiquated culture of artifice. ? First-time reissue of only album, originally released in 1981 ? High-concept post-punk from Los Angeles art collective, produced by DEVO associate Ed Barger ? SHOVELS & ROPE - 'JOHNNY 99'

Formats
  • TMR202 - 7"
    N/A
Details

The pleasure is all ours in announcing a new Blue Series single from Charleston, SC's own Shovels & Rope. Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent are definitely our favorite inter-gender rock n roll two piece since... well, you know (somewhere Alison Mosshart yells "WTF?!")... and we're certainly excited to present this Blue Series single featuring two covers of real life titans of the biz. Side A gives us Shovels & Rope's piano heavy take on Bruce Springsteen's "Johnny 99" while the flip is a slinky hip shaking version of Tom Waits' "Bad As Me." This is the perfect soundtrack for two doomed souls dancing in the glow of a jukebox in a greasy spoon diner... We reckon Messrs Springsteen and Waits should be mighty proud.
