MORDECAI - 'COLLEGE ROCK'

Formats
  • RR/TT34 - LP
    655035013411
Details

College Rock is the rabidly anticipated new full-length from Mordecai, the most charismatically tuneful knuckledraggers in Missoula; quite possibly in all of Montana. The album cruises and plods across twelve tunes that recall the rougher trades coming out of the UK, the early squall of Cleveland?s proto-punk merchants and the reckless abandon of Will Shatter and crew. This rock trio lacks pretense; their power comes from the electric joy of plugging in and turning up. Geographic isolation works in their favor, as guys of Mordecai?s talent and vision would surely have been chewed up and spit out long ago by a more populous metropolis. Instead, College Rock proves that at least a few residents of Silver Bow County can teach a lesson in urban detachment. ? New album from Missoula power trio follows their debut on Killertree Records (Universal Indians, Ex-Cocaine, etc.) ? For fans of Rocket From the Tombs, The Fall, Cheater Slicks, broken strings, latenight noise, etc.

Simon Joyner, who over the course of thirteen albums has released a unique and influential body of work on a myriad of independent labels, and Dennis Callaci, who has recorded nearly as many records with his band Refrigerator and runs one of those said labels, present their second record together. Their first collaborative release was a one-sided vinyl-only release on Catsup Plate Records a decade back entitled Stranger Blues, a direct-to-one-track live recording of the two playing together and sharing one mic. Though recorded in the same spot (i.e. the living room of the Callaci home), New Secrets is a different record altogether?a call and response exercise of sorts, with a Joyner song answering the plea to the preceding Callaci dirge. Recorded and mixed live by Jarvis Taveniere (noted for his Rearhouse recordings and as a member of Woods) over the course of three days, the duo was backed up by Joyner?s band from the Ghosts record of last year. Augmenting the album?s eleven tracks are guest appearances by Franklin Bruno (Human Hearts, Nothing Painted Blue) and Kevin Morby (The Babies). Reuniting the original cast from the first release, noted artist Rob Carmichael designed the cover art around Callaci?s drawings. ? All new music from Simon Joyner and Dennis Callaci (Refrigerator) ? Follow-up to 2003 Stranger Blues EP ? Recorded and mixed by Jarvis Tavernier (Rearhouse, Woods) and Joyner?s full backing band, guest spots by Franklin Bruno and Kevin Morby (The Babies)

RED TEMPLE SPIRITS - 'S/T'

Formats
  • IP063/064/065 - 3xCDs
    616892108047
Details

Independent Project Records is thrilled to announce the long-awaited CD reissue of the two phenomenal albums released by enigmatic Los Angeles band Red Temple Spirits: Dancing to Restore an Eclipsed Moon and If Tomorrow I Were Leaving for Lhasa, I Wouldn?t Stay a Minute More... Originally released in 1988 and 1989, these records sound like nothing else from the period, deftly blending gothic post-punk with pagan tribal psychedelia. Red Temple Spirits? debut is a haunting masterpiece laden with exotic musicianship and a unique combination of Native American and Eastern mysticism. While shimmering guitar textures weave patterns over heavy hypnotic rhythms, the enchanting lyrical imagery of vocalist William Faircloth brings a trippy, shamanistic quality. On its ten powerful originals, plus what may be the finest cover version extant of Pink Floyd?s ?Nile Song,? Dancing to Restore an Eclipsed Moon showcases an austerity, grace and pureness to form that remains fresh over two decades after it was originally recorded. A fully developed excursion into other realms, the band?s second album is marked by rumbling basslines and slithery guitar washes of elegant brilliance. Once again drawing inspiration from Tibetan and Native American cultures, vocalist Faircloth leads the listener through a tangle of mystical themes while guitarist Dallas Taylor, bassist Dino Paredes and drummer Thomas Pierik blend heavy tribal rhythms and etherial guitar. In the UK, Sounds magazine described ?City of Millions? as ?a song many bands have died trying to execute.? In addition to the nine originals, If Tomorrow... also features cover versions of Pink Floyd?s ?Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun? and 13th Floor Elevators? ?Rollercoaster.? Both albums have been completely re-mastered and are supplemented with three bonus tracks (both sides of the New Land single, originally released on Independent Project in 1989, along with a previously unreleased later version of the song ?New Land?) and a third disc reproducing the band?s first demo tape. Packaged in a deluxe over-sized four-color hand-letterpress discfolio designed by Bruce Licher, with full-color lyric inserts and gilded letterpress-printed glassine inner sleeves, this essential reissue is limited to a numbered edition of 1000 copies. ?? Dancing to Restore an Eclipsed Moon by Los Angeles psychedelic futurists Red Temple Spirits is a double album of tribal art metal and hypnojangle?. If Tomorrow I Were Leaving for Lhasa, I Wouldn?t Stay a Minute More... is a trippy earful of stark, foreboding psychedelia and heavy, jagged mantra rock laced with echoes of ?60s shamans all drowning in reverb....? ?David Fricke, Rolling Stone ? Completely re-mastered with bonus tracks ? Beautiful over-sized 4-color hand-letterpress printed package with full-color lyric inserts ? Limited, numbered edition of 1000 copies

  • ITR238CD - CD

In The Red is proud to announce the release of The Oblivians? first studio full-length album from since 1997?s ...Play Nine Songs with Mr. Quintron. Desperation picks up right where the band left off, delivering fourteen scorching tracks of soulful punk-garage-blues trash rock informed in equal parts by ?50s rock ?n? roll, ?60s garage rock, Memphis soul, Delta blues and Killed By Death-style punk. There?s even a Cajun Zydeco cover here! As Greg Oblivian puts it, ?Between our last record as a band in ?97 and now, a lot of water has passed below that bridge. We three went our own ways after that and pursued our own musical goals. Personally, I often missed the dynamic that Jack and Eric offered to my songwriting. Almost as much as I missed being given carte blanche to add a thing or two to theirs. I?ve played with lots of great musicians in the interim but needless to say, it?s a hard itch to scratch. The dynamic between us was a singular thing. So, over the years as we would occasionally reunite for a festival or special occasion, the idea began to grow in the back of my mind?the idea of making a new record. I mean, if you?re going to keep playing as a band eventually you?ll want new songs to play. Because as much as we enjoyed playing together the thing I missed the most was creating together. So that?s what we did.?

OBNOX - 'A RAGIN' IN THE SUN'

Formats
  • AW069 - 7"
Details

Anyway is proud to release "A Ragin' in the Sun" by Cleveland's Obnox which is the alias by Lamont "Bim" Thomas, who has spent a lifetime immeresed in music. Some may look at Obnox ?A Ragin' in the Sun? ep as another overgrown 7" with no direction, but in actuality, this record is simply a pop record that's been sprinkled with raw punk and a little hip hop beat culture. "Ragin" is not unlike this year's previous three releases by Lamont Thomas, best known as the drummer in Bassholes, This Moment in Black History, Puffy Areolas, and Unholy 2, all of whom have records to be released in 2013. Needless to say Thomas is responsible for nearly a dozen releases last year and there's not a bad one in the bunch. The "A Ragin in the Sun ep" is one of the strongest releases of the pack with its blown out, some what, Spectorian production. This record is limited to 500 copies and then it will be gone.

RUFUS THOMAS JR. - 'BEAR CAT / WALKIN' IN THE RAIN'

Formats
  • TMR-185 - 7"
Details

Originally released in 1953, "Bear Cat" by Rufus Thomas is as certifiable a primitive R'n'B smoker that's ever existed. Complete with the inimitable Joe Hill Louis on guitar, the future "Funky Chicken" Thomas gives his male-perspective answer record to Big Mama Thornton's "Hound Dog." In the process, the legal powers behind "Hound Dog" writers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller won a lawsuit claiming "Bear Cat" infringed on the duo's copyright. Ever since the writing credits have been Leiber/Stoller, but what has not changed is the unbeatable groove that moves the song. "Bear Cat" is as fresh today as it was when it was originally released sixty years ago.

PRISONAIRES - 'BABY PLEASE / JUST WALKIN IN THE RAIN'

Formats
  • TMR-186 - 7"
Details

Also released in 1953, "Just Walking in the Rain" by the Prisonaires was Sun's first certifiable hit. Penned Johnny Bragg and Robert Riley, both inmates at Tennessee State Prison, the solemn, haunting doo wop vibes were enough to garner the group, all incarcerated inmates, frequent day passes out of prison walls to perform across the state...including numerous engagements at the governor's mansion. The vocal prowess and good behavior on day trips would be enough for most group members to be pardoned by the governor. Elvis Presley often said the Prisonaires were his favorite vocal group and even covered "Just Walking in the Rain" on occasion. The proof is in the pudding on this one.

JOHNNY CASH - 'GET RHYTHM / I WALK THE LINE'

Formats
  • TMR-187 - 7"
Details

Released in 1956, "Get Rhythm" is an upbeat number by Johnny Cash with positive lyrics speaking of a happy shoe-shine boy. While the song is classic, inimitable Cash, it would quickly become overshadowed by its b-side, "I Walk the Line." A peculiar song that changes key between each verse and has no chorus, "I Walk the Line" would become the song Cash is best known for, a tale of pledged fidelity with lyrical undertones implying even deeper meaning. Rolling Stone magazine ranked the song at #30 in their 2004 list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
