SEWERS - 'HOISTED'

Formats
  • HOMELESS9 - LP
Details

Vinyl LP only, incl. download code Limited edition of 400 only. Bottom-feeder band, Sewers combine the cunning of the Country Teasers, the wonk of The Fall and a Killdozer scrawl. It’s a stew of Australia’s finest deadly exports like King Snake Roost, Lubricated Goat, and feedtime. Sewers ain’t afraid to piss in the pond, keeping the Tasmanian tradition of inbreeding alive. Sewers was borne unto this wretched world in two, double ‘O’ eight. The band was originally a two-piece inspired by Uncle Sam’s army of skull music ala Clockcleaner, Homostupids and the local Brisbane scum talent of Kitchen’s Floor and Marl Carx. But the band vamoosed before the water was boiled leaving behind only a demo - Piss Vapours. Song ‘Lineage’ from said demo was resurrected on Negative Guest List sampler ‘Songs of Negativity 2’ and given the kiss of wax via ‘Wings Over Gabba’ LP (the best songs of Negativity on NGL). Sewers were originally described by RK of Terminal Boredom as “a more feral Pheromoans”. Although lain dormant, the oil was still bubblin’ away. Eventually it seeped its way up through the soil to the surface. In mid-2011 the band started rehearsing sporadically and expanded to the standard four-piece. Some shows were played and recordings made. Album attempt number one was made in extreme heat that rivalled the Gobi desert. That session was canned, two members left and another two replaced them. Invited to go on tour by Martyr Privates they cobbled together a demo tape, which made small ripples around the world as far as Spain, USA and the UK. RK weighed in once again, “ some hillbilly-punk shit, like Pogues if they were actually as cool as they looked in 'Straight to Hell' and were actually King Snake Roost and not The Pogues”, ‘Music is surely rooted in the dirt a la feedtime or 3Toed Sloth, more outback and dusty grime than swamp-n-muck”. “Excellent songs, with good titles even,” and the kicker, “These guys had a track on the NGL comp that wasn't even half as good as any of the songs on this if I remember right”. Take two. Set in stone, the album was to be recorded in February. However, the singers face met with a slab of sidewalk after being thrown from a moving cab and the plans were, once again, in the cement mixer. Come April and despite the extra brain damage accrued, the LP was finally recorded, accident free, at Alchemix studios in Brisbane by Andrew Mclellan (who has also been responsible for recording Whores, Psy Ants, Ruined Fortune). Sewers finally found their home in Homeless (yeah that’ll never get old) and they called it ‘Hoisted’. Limited pressing of 400 copies only

PASCAL BARBARE - 'SORRY, MORNING'

Formats
  • BM008CD - CD
    5065001747106
Details

Pascal Babare was born in southern Australia, his mother a singer and his father the first gangster to join the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Raised in and out of ashrams on a diet of Pet Sounds and droning chant, Pascal helped care for his first mentor, a camel named Jinglebaba, whilst listening to 2-Pac and devising uniquely horrific ways to kill insects. Wondering what it all meant, he wrote to Brian Wilson, who told him to focus on his heart's vibrations in a letter he keeps close to this day. A drummer in his pre-teens, Pascal starting picking up instruments he found in his house until the banging expanded to encompass guitars, harmoniums, birds and thighs, finding its way into the sublime chunks of warm, rickety pop committed to tape and released on cassette as ‘Thunderclap Spring’ in November 2009. With his sophomore album ‘Sorry, Morning’, Pascal Babare presents a beguiling set of fluid yet unpredictable pop songs that touch simultaneously upon the majesty of The Flaming Lips, the whispered beauty of Sufjan Stevens, the clattering rhythm poems of Microphones and the psychotropic flux of Animal Collective. From the languidly beautiful 'Insomnia' to the bright, propulsive 'Family Hands', to the immediate, assured pop of 'Heaven Clubs' a ‘Sorry, Morning’ is a generous and enveloping listen built around uncommonly handsome songs rich in originality and lo- fi charm. These are songs possessed of a looseness, a lightness and a song writing alchemy that belies its creator's 25 years and announces a major talent and slacker super star in waiting. The album is packaged in a deluxe reverse board gatefold featuring artwork by Pascal and a fold out poster.

TEENAGE GUITAR - 'FORCE FIELDS AT HOME'

Formats
  • GBVI36 - LP
    655035083612
  • GBVI36CD - CD
    655035083629
Details

For the most discerning aficionados of Robert Pollard and Guided By Voices, Teenage Guitar offers experiments in spontaneity and lo-fi witchiness and wizardry, exploring multiple moods and styles. This is pure high-potency solo Pollard (vocals, guitars, piano) with occasional assistance from Greg Demos (drums) and Joe Patterson (bass). Brewed in the home laboratory using a historic mid-90s Tascam 488 cassette recorder, without professional engineers or adult supervision, Force Fields at Home recalls the sound and spirit of mid-’90s GBV EPs like Clown Prince of the Menthol Trailer. Only the lyrics were composed ahead—the music flowed spontaneously while the tape ran. Don’t blink, these will disappear quickly.

FEDERATION X - 'WE DO WHAT WE MUST'

Formats
  • RECESS170/MMLP02 - LP
    789397829813
Details

5th full length record by Northwest hard rockers Federation X. Founded in 1998, Fed X has played over 5 hundred shows in Europe, Israel, & the US, been reviewed in MOJO, NME, VILLAGE VOICE Ect, selected for air play on the John Peel show & recorded records with Tim Green & Steve Albini. We Do What We Must is 10 brand new songs produced by DEAF NEPHEWS (Dale Crover & Toshi Kasai). “We Do What We Must is a more fully realized vision of the songwriting power hinted at on their previous efforts. Apart from being filled with shit kicking riffs, a more mature melodic sense pervades. My biggest problem with this album is that there are so many great tracks, I can't easily figure out which one is my favorite… the album abounds with instant classics.” – AARON BEAM – RED FANG "Federation X has delivered another stellar record on par with all that have come before it. Maybe not as consistent as AC/DC, but as thoughtful as Bruce Springsteen, Fed X bring another solid record of pummeling tracks full of stories of epic journeys and self realization. It's also super sick to air drum to." – FRANKI CHAN - IHEARTCOMIX “This record is what I imagine it would sound like if Matt Dillon's character from ‘Over the Edge’ had survived, moved to some other shitty town, got messed up on drugs, learned some lessons, and then started a really good band.” – JARED WARREN – MELVINS/BIG BUSINESS

STAVE - 'REFORM'

Formats
  • FSS021 - LP
Details

Reform is the first work by Stave. The album is an exercise in precision and spacialization, with isolated electronics and icy beats producing a grisaille of vaporized metals. Tracks move from disembodied murk and blunted pulses to sustained forcefulness. Touch points include techno, ambient and industrial predecessors, all bent gravitationally towards a dark, cold and unsettling soundworld. Based in Chicago, Stave is the solo project of Jonathan Krohn who also collaborates in the group Male. FSS has manufactured a limited edition of 200 LPs, each packaged in hand screened, die-cut covers with a download code. Mastered and cut to lacquer at Chicago Mastering Service by Shelly Steffens. Grinding, noisy and decidedly cavernous, "Tower9" slots Stave in amongst contemporary techno/drone botherers Vatican Shadow, Container and even Raime, but listen closer and you'll hear that Krohn's influences are a little further into the past. "Tower9" takes the Muslimgauze imprint (punishing overdriven loops, decaying samples, off-key drones) and fuses it with the rhythmic sensibility of an early, Analogue Bubblebath-era Richard D. James and comes up with a sound that while capturing the zeitgeist, manages to stand out pretty easily. FACT April 8, 2012
