**RESOLICITED DUE TO NEW VINYL FMT & PRICING**TV Ghost’s third full-length for In The Red, Disconnect is a journey to the center of dreams. The Lafayette, Indiana, band displays a newfound maturity, incorporating churning rhythms and psychedelic drone into a lush torrent of gaseous keys, sprawling guitars and eerie melody. Think Porcupine-era Echo and the Bunnymen and Tago Mago-era Can run through a Cure Pornography blender. “TV Ghost’s 2009 debut LP, Cold Fish, is a maelstrom—10 hectic songs ripped out in 25 minutes. Stuffed to the seams with wiry guitars, trembling keyboards, crashing beats, and Tim Gick’s mad-man warble, it has the creepy tension of a post-punk haunted house where the Cramps, the Scientists, or Pere Ubu might leap out from the shadows at any moment. The band deftly balances precision and abandon—every moment sounds lunatic and unhinged, yet no track collapses into complete anarchy. “That abandon has subsided a bit on Mass Dream, which doubles the length of its predecessor despite having only one more track. That’s by design—Gick says that his intent was to “space things out more, let the songs breathe.” And while I miss Cold Fish’s farther-flung moments, the band has countered that loss with songs that are deeper and more open. Now, along with all the post-punk echoes rattling around, unexpected reference points pop up. At times I hear the enervated drama of Echo & the Bunnymen’s Ian McCulloch, or the stridency of Ian Svenonius during his Nation of Ulysses days. And TV Ghost prove as adept at stark dread as they are at fevered bedlam....” —Pitchfork

SECRET PYRAMID - 'MOVEMENTS OF NIGHT'

Formats
  • SOD102 - LP
    600197510216
Details

Secret Pyramid is the solo project of Vancouver-based musician Amir Abbey, whose previous output includes The Silent March cassette (to be reissued on vinyl by Students of Decay in early 2014). Movements of Night finds Abbey further develop and refine the haunting, faraway sound-world that earned the aforementioned release well-due praise. “A Descent” opens the record; its title aptly portends the track’s dirge-like drones and throbbing cycles of low-end. Throughout Movements of Night, Abbey deftly navigates the properties of sleep and unconsciousness, charting a course that is equal parts harrowing and funereal, tranquil and sublime. Juxtaposing the everyday with the obscured, the half-there melodies and arcs of hazy guitar histrionics of “Closer” dissolve into “To Forget,” a track that posits a more familiar, tangible atmosphere in which radiant drones are tethered to a driving bassline, recalling perhaps a lost ’70s Popol Vuh Herzog soundtrack. “Escape” closes the album on a nostalgic note, akin to the feeling of waking from a wondrous dream which one knows one cannot revisit. With Movements of Night, Abbey casts his net into the abyss of the unconscious and returns with a potent paean to the dreamworld.

ELVIRA - '2 BIG PUMPKINS'

Formats
  • TMR238 - 7"
Details

As the Shaggs so wonderfully sang "It's Halloween! It's Halloween!" How could Third Man let the year pass without any celebration? They couldn't. They are beguiled to bring you two new original recordings from Elvira™ Mistress of the Dark. With two songs written by the otherworldly Fred Schneider (of the B-52s!), both "2 Big Pumpkins" and "13 Nights of Halloween" brim with fun double-entendres, campy cackling, devilishly danceable beats and so much more. If that weren't enough, the cover art for the single is printed with heat-reactive ink. So while Elvira may appear to be only a dark silhouette, once things heat up you'll definitely get a delightful eyeful. And did we mention pugnacious purple vinyl? I think we just did. The 7"s will begin shipping this week, set to arrive to folks just in time for their wonderfully wicked Halloween parties.

COPPICE - 'BIG WAD EXCISIONS'

Formats
  • QB25 - CD
    680569061409
Details

Coppice, the Chicago-based duo of Joseph Kramer and Noé Cuéllar, have released a small but beautifully formed body of work showcasing unique instrumentation (bellows and electronics) and compositional practice. Big Wad Excisions builds on earlier experiments while tightening the focus and introducing new, unexpected elements. It also re-launches the Quakebasket label, which after lying dormant for six years and relocating to Louisville, KY, is entering a riotous second phase. Using specific instrumental preparations and aiming for an “impression of transparency” in their music, Coppice’s compositions are drenched in both clarity and mystery. They squeeze full-on velocity and lilting beauty out of instruments seen as discarded artifacts of unconsidered eras—huffing and cracking, puffing and firing. “Both of us are very focused on visceral ways of performing,” they reflect. “[We] let specific gestures and textural changes draw an audience into a special experience.” All throughout Big Wad Excisions, one hears music coming into being. Given the state of technology and society, no group should sound quite like Coppice does. However, the brilliance of their recent work has proven otherwise, blasting open the gates of the status quo and helping to redefine the future of music. Through their “sense of quiet risk” and their delicate balance of the transparent and the occluded, Coppice’s compositions parlay a double-tease of seduction and nuance: the humming and wheezing of the universe, breath by bellow breath.

CHEAP TIME - 'EXIT SMILES'

Nashville, Tennessee’s punk warlords Cheap Time soldier on, delivering their fourth studio album. Produced once again by band leader / singer / guitarist Jeffrey Novak at his home studio, Exit Smiles builds off the sound of 2012’s Wallpaper Music, employing sharper production and more expansive songwriting. Along with danceable artrock stompers like “Kill the Light,” and “Slow Variety,” the album also includes more progressive material like “Modern Taste” and the abrasive title track that opens the album. Taking everything up a notch is new bassist Jessica McFarland (vocalist of Heavy Cream), whose voice is the perfect counterpoint to Novak’s Bailey / Devoto punk snarl. McFarland’s tight bass playing fits right in the pocket between Novak’s overblown guitar chords and drummer Ryan Sweeney’s endless, Moon-y drum fills. Sweeney is Cheap Time’s backbone, an integral part of the band since 2010’s Fantastic Explanations. His drumming is powerful and relentless, especially on songs like “Country and City.” Where most bands drag or burn out around their second album, Cheap Time are students of rock history. They tread in the footsteps of their ’70s heroes—like Sparks or Alice Cooper—learning from the shortcomings of previous works and continuing to develop their craft. They’ve worn out their John Cale and Peter Hammill LPs, and finally delivered the classic punk album for 2013!

MOLLY DRAKE - 'S/T'

Formats
  • ST5 - LP
    656605763217
Details

Squirrel Thing Recordings, the label behind the mysterious lost recordings of Connie Converse, is proud to announce the proper release of this self-titled collection of never-before-heard songs recorded by Molly Drake in the 1950s at the Drake family home, lovingly restored by Nick Drake’s engineer John Wood. According to Joe Boyd, legendary producer of Five Leaves Left and Bryter Later, “this is the missing link in the Nick Drake story.” For fans of Nick Drake, Molly Drake reveals an undeniable influence on her son’s celebrated canon. Moreover, these songs present a comprehensive first look at a singular and sophisticated artist in her own right. Molly Drake’s music is at once beautiful, charming, dark and pensive. The easy elegance of her lyrics belies their deeper themes of regret, memory, dread and the sublime, crystallized as only a poet can. Her performances are intimately staged in the family sitting room, and perfectly complemented by her own piano accompaniment. With an initial CD pressing that quickly sold out earlier this year, Molly Drake is now receiving a grander release, and appearing on vinyl for the first time. The album features family photos and a biography by her daughter, Gabrielle Drake.

GOOCH PALMS - 'NOVOS'

Formats
  • ANT023 - LP
Details

NOVO: A word used to describe the actions, attitudes, beliefs, and dispositions (among other things) of a lazy, apathetic, and above all, worthless individual from Newcastle, Australia.  Move over Savage Garden, Australia’s got a new favourite duo, The Gooch Palms! And they’ve just released their debut album, NOVO’S. Aptly set against news footage of The Star Hotel riots, in Newcastle in 1979, from which Leroy MacQueen & Kat Friend emerged. Novo’s rare capture of Friends’ sweet nasally vocal, sidles with The Gooch Palms’ scuzzy garage sound and lucid surf-style guitar tones effortlessly. NOVO’S was recorded over a short day at the "Gooch Farm", before sending it across the Pacific, to be mixed and mastered by NOBUNNY guitarist, Jason Testasecca (AKA Elvis Christ) in Oakland, CA. It's charming, it's slacker-punk, and we've got a feeling you'll fucken love it. It’s out on Anti Fade Records!!

VICTOR DIMISICH BAND - 'S/T'

Formats
  • SB153 - LP
    655030115318
Details

Siltbreeze is proud to announce the long-awaited vinyl retrospective of perhaps the most elusive of all Christchurch ensembles, The Victor Dimisich Band. Originally released in 1983 on Flying Nun in a minuscule edition, the band’s lone self-titled 12-inch has become a cult classic more sought-after than owned. Through the intervening years, both the Xpressway and Medication labels issued cassette and CD compilations of the band’s material. With a unique sound that fused an almost gothic styling with warbly desert psych à la 13th Floor Elevators, The Victor Dimisich Band created its own genre, one that still has not been been aptly codified to date. Membership included Peter Stapleton (Vacuum, Pin Group, Scorched Earth Policy), Stephen Cogle (Vacuum, Terminals), Alan Meek (Vacuum, Bilders), Tony O’Grady and Mary Heney (25 Cents, Scorched Earth Policy). Historians and enthusiasts know that Heney replaced O’Grady just prior to the recording of the 12-inch, as the former had become a born-again Christian and sold his equipment. So there you have it.

MAMMATUS - 'HEADY MENTAL'

Formats
  • SPIRITUAL012 - LP
    655036001219
Details

If you’ve seen mammatus clouds in person, you probably noticed the way those massive formations hang heavy like wilting and bulbous gray-blue sacs, bubbling from heaven towards us. Curiously, as monstrous as they look, these gentle giants are not portents of a storm; they cradle the sky, high above where they belong. How can something so heavy float? If you’ve seen Mammatus the band in concert, you probably noticed how visual their sound is. Guitarist Nicholas Emmert sports a one-piece full-body flight-suit, bassist Chris Freels dons a space cape, and drummer Aaron Emmert steers the ship, staring straight ahead with flashing laser eyewear. The homespun wizard-cum-trippy-dad-at-a-campfire look that they’ve adopted softens the blow of the heavy aural trickery afoot. Heady Mental is the perfect title for the third Mammatus album, for it rests heavily in the moldy caverns of heavy metal history, but doesn’t get too comfortable before revealing its true colors. This is music for flight, music for the sky, and music for the things that lie beyond. These men are searching for the source through sound. Repetitions of themes with variants spread over four separate songs that act as a whole. Heady Mental functions as a soundtrack to the Mammatus Brain: Heavy / Airy, Earth / Sky, Man / Creator, Complete and Grok’d. For the obligatory band reference, one could start by imaging what The Fucking Champs’ IV would have sounded like if they had been more into the McLaughlin / Santana LP Love, Devotion, Surrender instead of Iron Maiden’s Piece of Mind.
