Deep in the graveyard of San Francisco, a young hand with black and cracked nails is pushing up through a broken pile of e-slag. Bitter teeth tear through server cables and motherboards, desperate to be free from the ever-deepening sludge of tech waste… the iPhone is the new styrofoam cup. Stepping over them—eyes glazed, feet dragging, blank face aglow in the eerie luminescence of smart phones—is the inspiration for these songs. San Francisco has long attracted newcomers… but now the city faces the most dangerous, the most egregious and blandest of them all—people with lots of money. In the vacuum that is now expanding, there is a ragged, determined sound vibrating out of the dirty underground. This is POW! Deep ’80s synth bass percolates under the circuit-swamp-fried-egg guitar. The drums, a teenage tiger’s heartbeat, underpin vocals delivered like a deadpan face-slap from a kid half your age. The recording is simple and dense, and it has a natural Doppler effect on headphones. It’s perfectly poppy and rough at the same time, and it has a message, so dig in, ear-wise. Heed the warning bells echoing down the streets of San Francisco clogged with the cholesterol of normals. Next they could be knocking at your door…

SHOES THIS HIGH - 'STRAIGHT TO HELL'

Formats
  • SB160 - LP

Details

While Shoes This High’s existence was a mere glint in the eye of Father Time (a year or more, tops), they made every second count, stalking the New Zealand post-punk landscape— both North and South islands—with ravenous abandon. For most fans, their legend and reputation rest solely on the strength of one highly formidable (and collectable) self-released 7-inch EP from 1981. And as anyone with ears who’s had the good fortune to come in contact with its jagged, scabrous genius can attest, the cry invariably rings out afterward: “Mein Gott, is this all there is?” In the 30-plus years since its initial release, the answer has been a most unflinching “yes.” That is, until Siltbreeze tapped into the massive tape library of famed New Zealand underground music archivist Bob Sutton, who had in his possession a white-hot live scorcher of the group, culled from a set that went down at the infamous Billy the Club way back when. Straight to Hell showcases a band at the peak of their menacing powers. Guitarist Kevin Hawkins slashes and rips strings from his ax like a mad butcher; the rhythm section of Jessica Walker and Christopher Plummer is par excellence, while the sneering, contemptuous vocals of singer S. Brent Hayward spit like poison darts above the swagger. Expertly sequenced by Jared Phillips (Times New Viking), Straight to Hell is a most welcome and astonishingly great artifact that delivers in buckets a shivering, toxic rain you always knew had fallen. Vinyl comes with a digital download of the complete album plus the four studio tracks from the original 1981 EP. One-time edition of 500—buy now or cry later. • Never-before-released high-quality live recording of early ’80s New Zealand post-punk band • One-time press of 500 copies • Includes digital download of the complete album plus the four studio tracks from the original 1981 EP

BORED - 'TAKE IT OUT ON YOU'

Formats
  • DEFCON2 - LP

Details

Desperate is pleased to announce that it is reissuing the Take It Out On You LP by legendary Australian rock & roll juggernaut, BORED! It's the only recording of the band from their amazing Tim Hemensley-era line-up from 1989 - '91, and for many people it remains their defining moment. Hailing from Geelong, the coastal city just outside of Melbourne, Bored! were formed in the late '80s by guitarists Dave Thomas and John Nolan as an outfit which would meld their mutual loves of punk rock (of both the '77 and '80s US hardcore variety) and '70s hard rock/heavy metal (think Blue Cheer, 'Sabbath, Billy Thorpe and Lobby Loyde). With already a couple of records and a new bass player under their belt in the form of ex-GOD member, Tim Hemensley, they entered the studio in 1990 and recorded this 7-track LP which defines them as one of the great bands of their time. Comprising of Dave Thomas originals such as 'Mr. Ten Per Cent', the elongated sludgefest, 'Sweet Charity' and the wildly aggressive slab of energy known as 'Motherfuckin' Motherfucker', they rank as some of Thomas' best ever songs. Hemensley contributes two classics with the title track and the opener, 'Conquest', both of which are phenomenal tracks of high-energy punk/rock complemented by Hemensley's typically incisive lyrical wit. Rounding the record out are two brilliant covers: Pere Ubu's 'Final Solution', stretched out with many minutes of glorious feedback; and the Sex Pistols' 'Satellite', barked out with abandon by Tim, rendering it an awesome slab of hard rock. Long unavailable, this 180-gram vinyl edition on Desperate comes newly remastered by Mikey Young with a download card and a detailed two-sided insert featuring rare and never-before-published photos and exclusive liner notes by Dave Thomas and John Nolan. Limited to 500 copies. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AUSTRALIAN RECORDS OF THE 1980’S…
