THE RESIDENTS - 'RESIDUE OF THE RESIDENTS'

Formats
  • SV073 - 2xLPs

Details

Residue of The Residents collects outtakes, rare tracks and other experiments from this legendary San Francisco collective. Originally released on Ralph Records in 1983 and spanning The Residents’ career up to that point, this firsttime vinyl reissue has been expanded to a double LP and contains 26 songs from the late ’70s and early ’80s—the group’s most fertile period. Highlights from the first LP include the Morricone-inspired “The Sleeper,” the dreamlike “Whoopy Snort” (initially on the LAFMS compilation Blorp Esette), the intense collage piece “Kamikaze Lady” from the pre-Residents 1971 Baby Sex tapes, and the RAO Studio Orchestra version of “Ups & Downs” (which may be the group’s finest pop moment). The second LP features many insider favorites that have not been available on vinyl for decades: “Loser = Weed” (initially released as the B-side to the Satisfaction single), “Death in Barstow” and “Melon Collie Lassie” (from the Babyfingers EP), as well as The Residents’ contributions to the great Subterranean Modern compilation. Balancing the group’s conceptual impulses with a dark palette of electro-esotericism, Residue of The Residents is an intoxicating collection that serves as an ideal starting point for the uninitiated.

JOHNNY NOISE - 'THE DAY IS COMING'

Formats
  • SB166 - LP
    655030116612
Details

For the discerning pinetoppers of contemporary, post-everything aggro grit, the name Johnny Noise should be synonymous with the sound of grizzled, sonic élan. One of the principal constructors of Los Llamarada’s estimable creepy crawl, Noise’s guitar howls and snarls went deep in guiding that band’s portent vision of bleak, psychedelic ache. And now he’s cast all his brut-moderne madrigals— drums, strings, vocals, the whole shebang—into a solo cauldron of hairy, distempered muzz for your consumption. Sounding like a lurching composite of Randy Holden, Bruce Gilbert, Steve Hall and Eric Hysteric, The Day Is Coming is the out-of-nowhere masterpiece of 2014 no one saw coming. Seriously, this is some virtual goat-killin’, blood-suckin’, Chupacabra-damaged, splayed-out shit! The man is back and armed to the gills. You have been hipped.

BURNT ONES - 'GIFT'

  • CF037CD - CD

Details

Burnt Ones have been Castle Face favorites for years, and last year’s You’ll Never Walk Alone on Burger was the one for which they kicked themelves repeatedly for not getting to first. The label is very honored to present their third record, Gift. Far more psychedelic than their previous work, the album may be a bit of a surprise to fans on first listen. A potent blend of wide-eyed strummers on shifting sands is punctuated by blinking oscillators, left turns into wispy sound collage and tape manipulations, drug-rug-wrapped lushness and telephone whispers from a supremely stoned sounding Mark Tester, the guide through this cultish and vaguely sinister headphone-scape. It’s a woozy and a woolly one.

Tracks

1. Pulse
2. Money Man
3. Submarine
4. Bye Bye Floating Charm
5. Spell Breakers
6. Is It Over

SPIES - 'THE BATTLE OF BOSWORTH TERRACE'

Formats
  • SB164 - LP
    655030116414
Details

The Spies bear the unique distinction of one of New Zealand’s true missing pieces in the Underground puzzle. With no audio documentation ever seeing the light of day in their time (1978-79, Wellington), the band really did exist in a you-had-to-be-there bubble. Historically (as in, now) known as hatching both George Henderson (later of The Puddle) and Christopher Plummer (who also thumped heads in Shoes This High), The Spies possessed a lithe but keen awareness of both the Canterbury and DIY movements that were taking place back in Old Blighty. The Battle of Bosworth Terrance imagines a bridge connecting Kevin Ayers and The Desperate Bicycles—a much-needed safe passage over a mysterious chasm you never knew was there. The fact that these recordings exist at all is nothing short of miraculous serendipity; the story is beautifully retold by Mr. Henderson in the liner notes. If you’re thinking forgery, theft, drugs and distinctive footwear (Alpaca boots perhaps?), congrats, the sniffer is working just fine. Besides the heretofore unknown music, also included are photographs, lyrics and text. It’s only taken 30+ years, but the larcenous abandon that was The Spies is finally willing and able to be heard, read about and seen for the first time. Pressed in a one-time edition of 500 copies, The Battle of Bosworth Terrace includes a digital download card.
