THE RESIDENTS - 'SANTA DOG'

Formats
  • SV072 - 2x7"
Details

Welcome to the wild, bizarro world of the experimental artists The Residents. Little is known about the group’s origins or its members’ identities, although it is widely believed that they are based out of San Francisco, California. When their debut release, Santa Dog, first appeared in 1972 on the equally enigmatic Ralph Records / Cryptic Corporation, the few hundred copies quickly fell on deaf ears and blind eyes. Rumor has it that then-President Richard Nixon sent his record back. True to their “Theory of Obscurity” concept, The Residents cultivate mystery to ensure artistic integrity. With different musical personas for each of its four tracks, Santa Dog is a fully-formed avant-garde pastiche of musique concrète, Raymond Scott-esque exotica, television sound effects and the group’s own mutilated take on rock ’n’ roll that later became their trademark aesthetic. Superior Viaduct is honored to present the first-time vinyl reissue of Santa Dog, complete with Christmas-themed fold-out sleeve. The package is an essential artifact for devout fans and beginners—a puzzle wrapped in a piece of commercial music. Or perhaps it is the other way around?

MICHAEL KIWANUKA - 'YOU'VE GOT NOTHING TO LOSE'

Formats
  • TMR215 - 7"
Details

Third Man Records is delighted to present Michael Kiwanuka's contribution to the TMR Blue Series of releases. Kiwanuka, a 25 year-old UK native of Ugandan heritage, was raised in north London where he split his time between session work and local gigs. Along the way, having found footing as a solo artist, he was signed to Communion Records, then Polydor, and has since performed throughout Europe and North America too—touring in direct support of Adele. He made his way through Nashville this past summer with just enough pause and aplomb to commit these morsels to tape. The A-side "You've Got Nothing to Lose" is an original composition, featuring The Buzzards' Dominic Davis on upright bass and Cory Younts on piano, joined also by fellow balladeer Lillie Mae Rische on fiddle. Their contributions transform his work into a stone-cold groove with almost orchestral underpinnings, making it a fitting extension of their previous Blue Series. PRODUCED by Jack White (not collaborated with, so please fight your every urge to put "collaborator" in your headline!), the single also features a chilling rendition of Townes Van Zandt's infamous "Waitin' 'Round to Die" on the B-side, the perfect compliment to the timbre and mood of the A-side.

THE KREMLINGS - 'WHOLE EARTH CLEANSING'

Formats
  • DEFCON4 - LP
    934334401793
Details

Desperate Records is mighty proud to be releasing the debut LP by Geelong's . This young 5-piece has a self-released CD EP and a 7" EP on the Anti-Fade label under their belt and one of the wildest, most energetic live shows in the land. Singer Andre Merino manages to channel the spirit of Bon Scott and a young (AKA before the muscles took hold of his body and mind) Henry Rollins with an untamed, screeching performance, whilst the rest of the band emit a sweaty physicality in their music which harkens back to the glory days of '80s US hardcore (Black Flag, Husker Du) and the best Australian underground rock of yore (Scientists, Radio Birdman, Saints). Thanks to Mikey Young (producer of all good things Down Under), this energy has been captured on tape with this 14-track LP. “Whole Earth Cleansing” is an unrelenting roar of untamed rock & roll - the real thing - from a band who sound like they mean it. When they supported Jello Biafra last year at his Melbourne show, he was so impressed he talked of releasing an album of theirs himself. We've beaten him to it. Geelong is experiencing a real renaissance of great rock music the past 12-24 months (Living Eyes, Bonniwells, Frowning Clouds etc.): it's time you got on board. features some truly eye-popping cover art from Ahmad Oka, and comes on 180-gram vinyl in an edition of 500 copies. There's also a download card of the album, and a full-colour insert with lyric sheet.

LONDON DIRTHOLE COMPANY - 'THE SOUNDING ALLEY TAPES'

Formats
  • PHOER0021 - LP
  • PHOER0021CD - CD
Details

The gnarled bloody revenge that is THE LONDON DIRTHOLE COMPANY is back with another set of tales celebrating the absurdities of life and mankind’s futile role as it stands with the ripped out still fluttering heart beating to survive against all the odds. Part prime-time partisan punk noise, part Futurist disdain with a full dose of Dadaist sense of humour. Recorded with the regular live line up of the last 12 months (4 drummers, 3 guitars, bass and 3 different vocalists) producing the band’s blistering blend of Monks, Stingrays and Pussy Galore and like all these seminal bands, they have pulled apart the possibilities of 60s garage music and dragged them fighting and screaming into the 21st Century, albeit entirely with the vintage equipment of the day of course. LDC have also continued in their adopted music hall tradition of having multiple guest turns. This time in the form of regular contributors; Medway poet-cum-agit artist Sir Sexton Ming and Miss Bongo Debbie (Headcoatees, Nuns, A-Lines etc etc), plus the legendary back from the dead punk raconteur Mr Dick Scum (Armitage Shanks), songstress of love Miss Ludella Black (Masonics, Delmonas, Headcoatees) on vocals. The deft sax-work of Mr Terry Edwards (Madness, Gallon Drunk etc etc), who took time out from working on Yoko Ono's Meltdown Festival 'Double Fantasy' finale, to contribute, with last but not least a few guitar squiggles from meanest guitar this side of Rochester High Street, Mr Mickey Hampshire (Milkshakes, Masonics etc) completing the picture. All in all there are 17 tracks of the bands signature intense melee of short sharp punk, short sharp pop and darker heavier psych-outs clocking in at around 45 minutes in total. Recorded at analogue studio Gizzard, a place that really suited the hard, fast and loud working methods of the band, engineered by Ed Deegan, a kindred spirit in experimenting and bastardizing the fuzzy edges of music, LDC have in many ways, come of age.

GAY - 'BLUE HEART'

Formats
  • ZM017 - 7"
Details

*** Zoo Music is pleased to release the debut 7" from Grenaa (Denmark) band GÄY. In their own words: “There's not really an interesting event that started the band. We were bored, and decided to play my songs with full setup, and just went on with it. The songs on the LP ain't full set-up, it's just me in my room eating mcdonalds and writing songs. To be honest, I don't remember what I was listening to at the moment I recorded the songs. Bee Gees or something I guess. Probably a lot of other things too. Leonard Cohen, Jonathan Richmann, Walker Brothers... i could go on, but prefer not to.” “For paradox personified i did draw inspiration from literature, such as crime and punishment, history, meaninglessness, etc. The bassist, JAKOB, called me and asked if we should make a music video to one of of my songs and I told him YES, he said that he would be at my house in 30 minutes. Then i wrote the song in 20 minutes or something, and started recorded it trough the microphone on my macbook. In the first take of recording, Jjakob walked into my room with a great smile on his face, we used that first recording, and then we walked out into the beautifully boring landscapes of our hometown Grenaa, and filmed the video. Note: we are a band from Grenaa, not copenhagen, a lot of people get that wrong. The horrible sadness of the town inspired a lot of songs, along with it's beautiful woods and beach. “Blue Blue Heart” was just a love song to my girlfriend written and recorded very fast, with not to much hope for it to ever reach anyone. The songs are now played with full line-up, and I usually just bring a song to where we practice, and we play and work a little bit on it, everyone together so it can function.”

DUANE PITRE & CORY ALLEN - 'THE SEEKER AND THE HEALER'

Formats
  • SOD105 - LP
Details

Performed and put to tape at Estuary Recording Facility, The Seeker and The Healer constitutes the first collaborative work by Texas-based sound artist Cory Allen and Louisiana minimalist composer Duane Pitre. The album’s two side-long pieces were developed out of multiple improvisational sessions governed by predetermined rules, sourced from piano, bowed guitar, harmonium and 49-stringed drone harp (a custom-made instrument of Allen’s own design featured here on record for the first time). In the context of both musicians’ discographies, these pieces occupy a unique and important place, synthesizing the strengths and compositional tendencies of each into a sympathetic and symbiotic whole. Pitre’s powerful, overtone-laden string work, documented on sterling outings for labels such as Important and Root Strata, is on fine display, augmented by the keen sense of pacing and attention to the finer points of acoustic atmosphere that typify Allen’s solo output. Both tracks go beyond academic minimalism, mining deeper and more personal terrain . The arc of “The Seeker” begins with contemplative piano clusters that are wed to guitar and harmonium drones, building to a dramatic crescendo and punctuated by percussive histrionics sourced from Allen’s drone harp. “The Healer” conjures a focused, mournful environment imbued with rich sonic lyricism by way of Pitre’s bowed guitar. Operating as a duo, Allen and Pitre have found truly fertile ground, producing an album that stands as a radiant beacon in their already exemplary catalogs —a masterful record that proves to be distinct from their past releases and simply cannot be missed.
