Many years dreamt, one cold winter realized, Haunted Hearts is Dee Dee Penny (Dum Dum Girls) and Brandon Welchez (Crocodiles). It is not the melding of two bands; it is a true collaboration. The duo’s first full-length album, entitled Initiation, was written in the winter of 2012, holed up in their apartment, surrounded by a lot of books, Motown and krautrock. It was recorded by Jon Greene at Electric Orange Studios in San Diego, mixed by Jorge Elbrecht (Ariel Pink / Violens) at Static Recording in Brooklyn, and mastered by Joe La Porta at Sterling Sound in New York City.

MORDECAI - 'NEIL'S GENERATOR'

Formats
  • RR/TT38 - LP
    655035023816
Details

Why does everybody make such a big to-do about Mordecai’s Montana origins? Hell, it’s a place just like any other, just bigger than most. And it’s not like the (true) story of them recording in a YMCA bathroom really offers a proper “big sky” vibe, although it certainly had a more unique aroma than most studios. But on Neil’s Generator, things really do open up in a way where the juxtaposition between huge space / not so huge amount of people really makes sense. If the previous LP College Rock formed a friendly union between noisy Swell Maps-ian clatter, post-garage Fall prickliness, and the all-American DIY basement joy of Mike Rep / Tommy Jay, Neil’s Generator embodies the same kind of loose, ragged glory perpetrated by the Meat Puppets, Rayne, Dead Moon, and the Velvets staring into a cracked and filthy mirror. The guitars—and make no mistake, this is a guitar record, and a damn fine one indeed!—retain a spiky waywardness, like if Robert Quine had recorded a Rough Trade single. But these songs have more space to breathe, and therefore function as a launching pad for some gleeful six-string abandon. Who knows how many rodeos the Bodish brothers have witnessed, but for sure they understand the risky notion that sometimes you’re in control of a guitar, other times the guitar can get the best of you. If they’re not afraid to take the chance, you shouldn’t be either—so hop on board.

SOME EMBER - 'S/T'

Formats
  • DREAM10 - LP
    655035071015
Details

Self-produced and recorded over a period of two years, the debut full-length album from Calfornia duo Some Ember is the culmination of a range of experience for these two wanderers. Some Ember is rich with meaning, sonic creativity, and emotional energy, a striking evolution from previous releases Hotel of Lost Light and Asleep in the Ice Palace. Here, cold synthesizers and harsh industrial beats dominate the A-side, while swirling drone and organic percussion characterize the unique second half. The exceptional voices of Dylan Travis and Nina Chase balance the record, their melodies anchoring things firmly in the pop realm. Thematically, Some Ember explores the emotional contours of the perilous, exhilarating era in which it resides: channeling the free, open skies of California; cataloguing the oppressive grip of technological obsession; the deep contradictions inherent in life under the shadow of a crumbling post-colonial empire.

Tracks

1. River Walker
2. Shards
3. Shining
4. Mourning Jewelry
5. Splendor

H.USUI - 'SINGS THE BLUES'

Formats
  • VHF135 - LP W/ CD
    783881013511
Details

Solo darkness from remarkably pedigreed but rarely recorded Japanese legend Hiroyuki Usui (Ghost, Fushitsusha, L, Marble Sheep, A-Musik, August Born, etc.), Sings the Blues is raw and gripping, like a darker version of his all-time classic folk-psych work Holy Letters (VHF). Performed by Usui alone on voice, guitar, banjo, bass, steel guitar and cornet, the music is blunt and rough around the edges—a Tonight’s the Night-like offhandedness that increases the feeling of existential seriousness. Like Holy Letters, most of these tracks are undeniably “blues,” but there’s nary a familiar progression or guitar phrase. Vocals are a whisper, accompanied by simple guitar or banjo. Clever overdubs add to a few of the tracks—untutored (but just right) blats of cornet here, some electronic static there. If you like Loren Connors, Simon Finn, Jandek, Kan Mikami, Six Organs, etc., this is for you. Pressed in a limited edition, the vinyl includes a CD version of the album as well.• Solo darkness from Japanese legend • Member of Ghost, Fushitsusha, L, Marble Sheep, A-Musik, August Born, etc. • Limited edition vinyl press includes a CD version of the album • Will appeal to fans of Loren Connors, Simon Finn, Jandek, Kan Mikami, Six Organs, etc.
