SUBTLE TURNHIPS - 'REDHAIR WITH SOME'

Formats

Details

The French punk-garage-rock scene the past decade has seen some standout acts emerge such as Cheveu, Frustration, The Feeling of Love, Dimi Dero and more. Add the oddly-named SUBTLE TURNHIPS to this pile, as their fifth album – Redhair With Some – is proudly brought to you by Homeless on June 16th. The lack of hair on our Homeless head helped our hearing (try saying that rapidly 10 times) - not that we needed an aid to decide whether to release Redhair With Some - we’ve been a fan since hearing Terd Album (Hozac, 2010) and Meal (Pouet! Schallplatten, 2013) and immediately loved the rough cuts we were sent. Recruiting recording ace Mikey Young to mix the album brought a fresh new set of ears to the Turnhips sound, and another instant fan, hell we even hear some Eddy Current Suppression Ring-style guitar work in “Eileen”. Some have stated they hear Swell Maps or Pink Flag-era Wire in the Subtle Turnhips influences, whilst others have noted The Fall or even the destructionism of Brainbombs. "Imagine if The Pheromoans wanted to rock a bit harder, but not too seriously. It’s a gorgeous mess of Mark E. Smith meets Desperate Bicycles or Wire." (Permanent Records) “The best thing about keeping an open mind towards new garage punk is the occasional pleasant surprise, in this case Subtle Turnhips’ Terd Album. I don’t understand the band name, but after a few spins of Terd Album, it’s a fittingly incongruous moniker to their utilitarian, single-minded punk rock. There’s a weird semi-British accent going on with the vocals, which is only evident when they rise through the din, and a general disregard towards good taste and valid songwriting that I really appreciate. Kind of like a non-Australian, less goofy UV Race, as if some bitter group of people really took the DIY insubordination of Fuck Off Records to heart. Great stuff.” (Yellow Green Red)  vinyl only release, includes download code  350 copies  gatefold sleeve with hype sticker  Mikey Young mixed (Eddy Current Suppression Ring,Total Control)  RIYL: Swell Maps, Desperate Bicycles, Wire, The Fall, ECSR

The Flesh Eaters is the name behind one Chris Desjardins a.k.a. Chris D. Taking his stage name from a 1964 cult film, Chris D. wrote for legendary fanzine Slash in the late ’70s and assembled the first of many Flesh Eaters lineups from heavyweights in the burgeoning L.A. punk scene. After releasing a ravenous EP and heart-ripping debut album, The Flesh Eaters unleashed their era-defining statement, A Minute to Pray A Second to Die. Originally released in 1981, A Minute to Pray brings together the greatest band in American rock history: Dave Alvin (Blasters) on guitar, John Doe (X) on bass, Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) on sax, along with Bill Batemen (Blasters) and DJ Bonebrake (X) providing the album’s trademark percussive backbone. Chris D. leads the group like a man possessed. Through a series of grotesque vignettes, his lyrical prowess and indelible growl stand toe-to-toe with the music’s powerful shifts. From opener “Digging My Grave” (resembling a dieselcharged Magic Band) to the gothic groove of “Divine Horsemen,” each song is its own hairy beast. Inspired by African tribal music, ’60s garage-rock churn and Funhouseera Stooges swing, A Minute to Pray remains (according to author / archivist Byron Coley) “the best rock record ever recorded.” This first-time vinyl reissue and long out-of-print CD release has been carefully remastered and features liner notes by Coley. Without a doubt, The Flesh Eaters will hypnotize a new flock of listeners in this millennium.

HELDON - 'ALLEZ-TEIA'

Formats
  • SV028 - LP
    857176003287
Details

Allez-Téia, the second album by French guitarist Richard Pinhas under the Heldon moniker, was originally released in 1975 on the artist’s own Disjuncta imprint. Far from the band’s prog-tinged trio lineup, Allez-Téia features a menagerie of guitars, Mellotron and analog synthesizers. While opening track “In the Wake of King Fripp” pays homage to King Crimson in its title, the album’s heady textures and rhythmic meditations are more reminiscent of the German Kosmiche movement (Cluster, Harmonia, et al.) and post-rock experimentalists, such as Jim O’Rourke and Gastr del Sol. Acoustic guitar even makes a rare appearance— on the beautiful and melancholy “Aphanisis.” With front cover artwork depicting the events of May ’68 in Paris (by renowned photojournalist Gilles Caron), these dark ambient sounds make Allez-Téia perhaps the most revolutionary release in Heldon’s influential catalogue, foreshadowing Pinhas’s incredible solo work for decades to come.

“The first time I heard Dan Melchior I felt betrayed that no one had turned my ear to his strange sounds before then. The LP was called Hello, I’m Dan Melchior and it starts with the line ‘I once did mushrooms with Björk…’ Goddamn, he had me at mushrooms. “Since then, I’ve been blessed with unearthing several of his masterpieces from LP bins all around the world. Dan has made mighty and copious marks upon the world of wax. Every record is a wade through the primordial poem- brain that is Dan Melchior’s creative force. “What we have here is a fabulous collection of classic Melchior und das Menace. We asked, he let us dig through the archive, and lo and behold: Hunger, a grip of unreleased Melchior gold. It will take less than ten seconds for the high to kick in after the rush of greasy guitars consume you at the get-go of ‘A Wizard Doesn’t Need a Computer.’ And yes, he’s taking the piss. “I’ve also been lucky enough to do some touring with him and his lovely wife and co-conspirator Letha. They may be the only white cats I know who don’t look weird in dashikis. I wish I was kidding…quite comely. Letha has been duking it out with a heavy illness, and although strong as ever, the bills are piling up and they could always use a hand. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of this record will go to aid them in this fight. Here’s a link to the website, should you feel the urge to donate otherwise: http://melchiorfund. blogspot.com/ “So please dig in with open ears and hearts. Let Dan melt your brains as he has ours at Castle Face.” —John Dwyer

THE GUN CLUB - 'FIRE OF LOVE'

Formats
  • SV054 - CD

Details

Fire of Love is the no-nonsense debut from blues-punk legends The Gun Club. Formed in 1979—when singer Jeffrey Lee Pierce taught a young Kid Congo Powers to play guitar—the band injects the Delta blues, rockabilly and ’60s garage with their own amplified fury. Originally released in 1981 on Slash’s sub-label Ruby Records, Fire of Love features the classic second lineup with Ward Dotson on guitar (replacing Powers, who left to join The Cramps) and The Bags’ rhythm section. Opener “Sex Beat” shakes and stutters through a dynamic slab of American rock ’n’ roll that reverberates throughout the album.“She’s Like Heroin to Me” is perhaps Pierce’s most famous paean to modern love, elevating him to raucous demigod of the underground. Take it straight from Chris D. of The Flesh Eaters, who (along with Tito Larriva of The Plugz) produced these sessions: “Fire of Love is probably the definitive record to come out of this roots revival movement. Several people have told me that record made them want to start a band and come to Los Angeles.” This long out-of-print CD release has been carefully remastered and features liner notes by Chris D.

HOLY SHIT - 'STRANDED AT TWO HARBORS'

Formats
  • PRIM02 - LP
    857176003812
Details

With a revolving door of collaborators that include Ariel Pink, Girls’ Christopher Owens and John Maus, Matt Fishbeck’s Holy Shit is ground zero for the West Coast’s lauded pop idiosyncrasies in recent years. The Harvard graduate and devout gondolier emerged as Holy Shit in 2006 with Stranded at Two Harbors, a collaboration with Ariel Pink that foreshadowed the latter’s work in Haunted Graffiti, and garnered a fervent cult following for Fishbeck’s singular approach to labyrinthine home production and chilling melodies. Later EPs appeared on imprints like Fat Possum, and recent years have found Holy Shit touring with Beach House. Fishbeck’s artistic character is further revealed by unusual projects: he contributed to a book on the venerable 1980s English pop group Felt and last year brandished a cover of “Woke Up Sticky,” a solo single from The Only Ones’ Peter Perrett, at an exhibition opening of visual artist Ryan McGinley in San Francisco. A latticework of understated percussion and tape hiss throughout, Stranded at Two Harbors on the front-end veers from the bristling new wave intensity of “Tokyo Gamblers” to the poignant psychedelic pop of “My Whole Life Story.” On the flip, Fishbeck’s pop adaptation runs wild. The damaged and buoyant thrill of “I Don’t Need Enemies” even puns on the English music weeklies, with an Anglo-inflected final line, “... or Melody Maker for that matter!” Production and surface aesthetic traits aside, “The Castle” illuminates Fishbeck’s principle assets: evocative imagery set to deeply penetrating melodies with that perfect guitar lead to match.

In the year 2014, in the ruins of the city once known as Los Angeles, three underworld dwellers with one job, one hot tub and one unkillable riff between them knew they had to make a ripping record—or die trying. This is their story. Guitarist Jed, bassist Patrick and drummer Bobby started in a room lit by a single green light, which changed them from humans to Zig Zags in the summer of 2010. Within the next four years, they’d record a song with Iggy Pop and an album with Ty Segall and go from playing house parties for pizza to staring off the stage at the Fillmore West. Before them had come giants—bands like Kiss and Sabbath whose names were carved into desks in detention for decades. Before them had come mutants, heavy metal and punk bands like the Dictators and Pentagram that spun into the void of history after failed orbital rendezvous with the fame they’d deserved. And before them had come freaks, one-known-copy private- press insanities like J.T. IV, White Boy and the Average Rat Band—the bands that happened when someone with a guitar thought fuck it loud enough

Rising is Straight Arrows’ new album half of which was recorded in frontman Owen Penglis’ house and the other half in his new, legitimate studio, set up after a neighbour started getting mad about all the quality 'medium fidelity' recordings happening next door. Straight Arrows began with Owen Penglis yelling about getting dumped and kicked out of bands into a four-track cassette machine in his bedroom. Joined by friends Alex Grigg, Angela Bermuda, and Adam Williams with colourful musical pasts, the four have honed their reverb-laden, fuzzed out, DIY punk garage into scrappy perfection and, in the process gained an outstanding reputation for being ‘‘the band that will make you start your own band’’. Since their inception Straight Arrows have pressed and sold out of internationally released 7”s, toured with friends Thee Oh Sees, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, The Black Lips, Jay Reatard (RIP) and Ty Segall and released their debut album ‘It’s Happening’ (Agitated, 2013) to a flood of praise. Bagging Album Of The Week from the likes of Australian radio stations FBi, 2SER, RTR and 3RRR, the record also landed them an invite to perform at the hugely respected Gonerfest in Memphis, Tennessee and a few rounds of touring the USA and Europe. Bands have been queuing up to have Owen Penglis record and produce their music – the likes of Royal Headache, Circle Pit, Living Eyes, The Frowning Clouds, The Gooch Palms have all used his bathroom and in 2012 Owen produced and recorded the who’s who of the Australian Garage scene for a 40th Anniversary tribute to the hugely influential Nuggets compilation. Rising is an exciting follow up to ‘It’s Happening’ and sees the band step things with their warm and dirty garage pop sound. For fans of: Pebbles, Nuggets, Lollipop Shoppe, Kinks, and all that Brit-Invasion sound, but also all the new slew of garage chug, Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Black Lips…
