GRUPPO DI IMPROVVISAZIONE NUOVA CONSONANZA - 'S/T'

Formats
  • SV067 - LP
    857176003676
Details

Considered the first collective of experimental composers, Gruppo d’Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza formed in 1964 in Rome to chase the expressive potential of live improvisation to its furthest reaches. Led by Franco Evangelisti, Gruppo also included Ennio Morricone before he found fame composing soundtracks. The ensemble advanced the innovations of 20th century avant-garde in laboratory-like studio settings where the intuitive interplay between members flourished. Before 1976’s benchmark release, Musica Su Schemi, Gruppo recorded this eponymous album in 1973. Whether the passages are jarring or soothing, clamorous or silken, the ensemble retains astounding organic coherence. An ultra-rare entry in Gruppo’s formidable discography, Gruppo d’Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza is finally reissued for the first time ever.

PETER JEFFERIES - 'ELECTRICITY'

Formats
  • SV055 - 2xLPs
    857176003553
Details

Peter Jefferies (This Kind of Punishment) released his brilliant sophomore album Electricity in 1994. While his solo debut, 1990’s The Last Great Challenge in a Dull World, has drawn comparisons to classic singer-songwriters like Nick Drake and Townes Van Zandt, Electricity is a far more sparse and nocturnal affair. Jefferies’ earthy baritone weaves between piano, guitar, cello and analog tape machine noise, pulling in listeners to the deep pastoral life of his music. With guest appearances from heavyweights in the New Zealand music scene (Straitjacket Fits’ Shayne Carter, Plagal Grind’s Robbie Muir and the Dead C’s Bruce Russell), Electricity has garnered a cult following among fans, yet the songs possess a singular quality—every note, utterance and flourish reflect back to Jefferies alone. The simple arrangements, in particular on ballads such as “By Small Degrees,” convey fiercely intimate moments as well as Jefferies’ tremendous range and playfulness as a writer. This first-time vinyl reissue includes four bonus tracks from 1992’s Swerve EP and is highly recommended for fans of Flying Nun Records, John Cale and Jim Shepard. After 20 years, now is the time to revisit the groundbreaking work of this New Zealand legend.

Castle Face announces a loogie-shined re-release of Coachwhips’ Get Yer Body Next Ta Mine on CD and vinyl! Following last year’s reissue of Hands on the Controls, the label continues dusting off the vaults, unearthing another screeching, swaggering beast. The tracks have been re-tweaked to taste (a pinch of capsicum) and what a picture emerges—the scuzz and squall cracking ever so slightly and revealing a coffee-can full of earworms underneath. The zombie-shuffle come-on of the title track is worth the price of admission alone, but there’s adrenalized bludgeoners here as well: “1000 Years,” “UFO, Please Take Her Home” and “Yes, I’m Down” all capture the band at their sweat-soaked best. You know there are a ton of Oh Sees back catalogue releases available exclusively from Forte —why don’t you contact your sales person for a complete list?

On the same day Ba Da Bing releases an album by Dunedin legend Hamish Kilgour, the label is honored to present the city’s current artists. The tiny city of Dunedin, located in the Otago Region of New Zealand, is synonymous with smart bands, incredible melodies and a wholly distinct and innovative music. Thanks to The Clean, The Chills, The Bats, The Verlaines, and The Dead C, Dunedin has amassed a worldwide reputation for innovative music. Local label Fishrider Records has taken on the mission of compiling and producing an album that casts a light toward the Dunedin of today. These bands have all created their own sound away from the shadow of their city’s past, yet like many of their predecessors they retain the air of slightly disturbed melancholia along with a sense of space and distance from the rest of the world. Whether it is dark synth-pop, teen angst noise pop, guitar-and-organ jangle, or all-out psychedelic weirdness, these songs all come from a place on the edge of the world where the young still read books in abundance and fend off boredom by creating music and art in cold houses. Yet again, an extraordinary number of incredible groups are populating the scene, and the songs on Temporary are the best of the best—a Dunedin Double Plus Good, if you will.

THE DACIOS - 'MONKEY'S BLOOD'

Formats
  • HOMELESS5 - LP
    9342478005394
Details

 Vinyl only release, includes download code + inner sleeve with lyrics  250 hand numbered copies  8 track debut album, previously CD only, released 2009  EXCLUSIVE VINYL ONLY TRACK – “Dirty Dogs”  Remastered by Mikey Young “Amongst the messy history of Australian Rock and Roll it’s rare to find a band who get to the point and nail that point all the way the fuck home as convincingly as The Dacios; clarity, volume, ferocity, a hard-earned swagger and a complete absence of posing or conforming. Monkey’s Blood finds The Dacios sounding as if a young Jason Spaceman had drunk beer instead of taken drugs, replaced an orchestra with a pissed-off Patti Smith and got to the point. If the point of rock is riff and attitude, then Monkey’s Blood steamrolls any competitors, finding the core of both and bringing it to you at a volume and brevity that’s formidable.” – Andy Hazel (Interviews/Reviews – An archive of articles) The Dacios, from Melbourne via Hobart, are named after the village weirdos in the town where its members grew up. But weird is not the first word which springs to mind in describing this album. In fact, unlike a lot of current new releases, it’s not weird at all, and there are no traces of quirkiness or outlandish eccentricity. Instead, The Dacios serve up a powerful album of weighty rock'n'roll music, draped in super-scuzzy riffs which, when matched with clever, soul-tearing lyrics, provide a robust one-two punch that is the knockout. A family affair, The Dacios are a vehicle for the darker, more violent musical aspirations of siblings, Bean and Linda J Dacio, who initially came to the attention of major record labels whilst playing in their earlier band, Little Ugly Girls. Since those heady days, Bean and LJ continued to blaze a scorching trail across the Melbourne music scene, becoming respected stalwarts along the way. Originally released in 2009, The Dacios' debut Monkey's Blood is a filler-free compendium of forceful, authoritative compositions which, in the old vernacular, are all A-side material. Opener, “Liberty Lover” drips sex and acid all over the bastard hybrid of The Stooges and Velvets in preparation for the body-slam that is “Monica”. The title track is like a declaration of love that is so harrowing you can no longer tell good from evil. “Buzzard's Hide” picks up the pace before the dirty pop glory of “Grey Machine” and the kraut-ish “Girl In The Mirror”; it’s back to growling and gnashing of bones with the EXCLUSIVE VINYL TRACK “Dirty Dogs”; with the delicate "good hard fit" of “Shoe Size” wrapping up what we consider a perfect album. If ever there was an album that was just meant to be heard on vinyl, this is it. The Dacios' Monkey's Blood - a classic album that is now a classic record! Homeless Records most limited release to date - just 250 hand-numbered copies.
