PROSTITUTES - 'NOUVEAUREE'

Formats
  • LSSN025 - 12"
Details

Prostitutes – aka Cleveland, Ohio marauder James Donadio - flexes a whole new set of muscles on Nouveauree, his first work for Night School. Sticking to an all-analogue machinebased strategy, Donadio has warped and stripped his palette to create a juddering force majeure across 5 tracks and 28 minutes of power play. With previous work on labels such as Mira and Spectrum Spools, Prostitutes has deconstructed Techno forms and re-invigorated 4/4 structures to delirious, often psychedelic effect. Nouveauree can be viewed as a purge, a palette cleanser, a slab re-formed white-noise, bass-heavy kick drums and searing, improbable sampling. Mastered by James Plotkin and cut by Matt Colton, each sound and bar is perfectly placed for maximum stereo-field contamination. Opening stomper “Late To Take It Light” merges echoing, obfuscated sound with a doom-laden kick before collapsing into an analogue, almost-improvised climax. “Hate’s In The City” ups the tempo with masterful, bass-heavy rhythm and faded static bursts before “Punk In The Street” jumps in, quite possibly the most audacious track of Prostitutes’ career. A definite highlight, the track is infected with a deeply offensive horn sample that does battle with a rumbling, deafening drum machine, a battle that is decided with one of the most extreme 15 seconds waxed this year. Side 2 allows Donadio some breathing space, with “Dragged It Home To Bed” reveling in a more rolling rhythm punctuated with lush frequencies and expert filtering. “So Goddamn Gaunt” rounds off Nouveauree, a harking back to the classic Prostitutes sound, claustrophobic samples interspersing the tight, natural funk that Donadio has made his own.

We all have cousins, but COUSINS are not actually cousins. COUSINS are Leigh and Aaron (not Lee Aaron) and they are, and have been the hardest working band in Halifax, Nova Scotia for some time. COUSINS are a guitar/drums duo that play the rock and roll music of and for today; their Halls of Wickwire are generously filled with fuzz and reverb. There are/have been/forever will be ten thousand bands in Halifax, rising up, gasping for air, sinking, stuck in the mud, or flaring up like model rockets over the harbour’s shitty waters. The geographic, cultural, and economic factors of the region take their toll on the lifespan of the average Atlantic Canadian rock unit. But these COUSINS have persisted and carry on. After several years of skin shedding metamorphosis, near-endless north American touring, two full length albums, and a string of limited edition releases on various formats and labels, they’ve grown up, they sound refreshed and unencumbered by the weight of the region, or their own history. This band is poised, clean, and lean. This COUSINS version of rock and roll music will break through fences and set off roman candles. It is devastating and joyful, full of love and punk romance. It will fix your bike and leave paint under your fingernails. It is music that will shake off all that faux, dead, cool. This record will change your life if you let it. A heartbreaker and a healer, it looks an awful world dead in the eye, fills the lungs up with all that pain and worry, and then comes back breathing a beautiful fire. This is the fine art of defense and hope. A ramshackle monument built over a steady spring of melancholy. Electricity and blood in the lines. Guitar and drums. A musical avalanche set apart from the macho and debaucherous posturing and fictions of rock culture. This is a sound set loose, rolling down hill in a shopping cart, at once full of confidence, excitement, dread, and anticipation. The specs for the detail oriented: - COUSINS are Leigh Dotey & Aaron Mangle. - This is the third COUSINS full length album, and their first with Mutations Recording Co. - The album was recorded in a week at Candle Studios in Toronto, Engineered by Josh Karody (Beliefs) and Produced by Graham Walsh (Holy Fuck). - There is a Wickwire law firm in Halifax, Nova Scotia and a Wickwire assisted living home in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. You be the judge.

ARNDALES - 'DOG HOBBIES USA'

Formats
  • ITR261 - 12"
Details

Arndales consist of four men whose ages range from 42 to 51. Notable bands / artists with which they have been / are involved: Country Teasers, Thrilled Skinny, Badgewearer, Gag, Montana Pete, Pregnant Neck, Collapsed Lung, Zuno Men and Jad Fair. They’re menacing, menacingly good, regional treasures, stalker, very dangerous stretches of road, and I hate noise and scandalous handmade postcards. This is good, black crosses for eyes. Frantic, frenetic, edgy, disturbing, scratchy low-end menacing new wave. The whole presentation is something to be desired. John Peel would have played this lots, I guess we still miss him, when will they replace him? This band should be on your list, these songs should be on the list, that line should be on your list. Time to kill in your office? Listen to this. Angular but not in that obvious way, solid, national statues more Fall than Franz. They’re from the Three Counties, where ever that is, somewhere in Southern England, sounds more like a regional bus company. I’m out of milk again, and famous things in history. Great songs, menacing songs, new wave with excellent benefits and reading books, shared common interests, ancient Greeks, iced tea. Definitely not Ice-T. Plunged in to lots of things, they do a lot of things, they hope that bothers you. Arndales have things to say— pop that’s wrong, Wrong Pop. Before we ask the question and ask of selfsustained adventure (like John Wark in Escape to Victory). Not a bad song on here, just answers to the new town problem, national airline meals and oriental murder mysteries. This is very good, menacingly good and rather recommended and you won’t have to wear a suit.

COLORED BALLS - 'BALL POWER'

Formats
  • DEFCON5 - LP
    934334401809
Details

Rocket is mighty proud to be announcing the vinyl reissue of an all-time classic - and we REALLY MEAN ALL TIME CLASSIC - - Australian album, the Coloured Balls' 1973 album, Ball Power. Featuring guitar god Lobby Loyde at the helm, it remains one of the most revered Australian albums of all time, one with a massive cult following in both Australia and overseas. Originally released in 1973, it's a hard-hitting, high-energy mix of hard rock and proto-punk, very much in line with other outfits of the day such as the MC5 and the UK's Pink Fairies. Considered the poster boys of the sharpie scene (a peculiarly Melbourne gang phenomenon not unlike the skinhead movement), they were known for their riotous live shows and uncompromising music. Along with the band's Heavy Metal Kid LP from 1974 (also released on Desperate: DEFCON3), it's an era-defining slab of pre-punk Australian rock & roll. This Desperate edition has been remastered by Gil Matthews from the original tapes and it absolutely ROARS. Make no mistake: this is the best version of the album which has ever been available. Pressed at RTI in the US, the sound quality will blow minds. It comes housed in a gatefold tip-on sleeve on 180-gm vinyl with a decorative obi strip. 1,000 copies.

MV / EE - 'ALPHA LYRAE'

Formats
  • COM041 - LP
  • COM041CD - CD
Details

Child of Microtones proudly announces the release of its first LP! MV & EE’s Alpha Lyrae is a heartfelt paean to cosmic children and beasts everywhere. > “i was feeling rockets all the time when we were creating and listening to this record. sometimes they were bottle rockets, imaginary rockets, estes, space crafts and gimongous star machines that haven’t been built yet. more importantly i was feeling stages, secondary...tertiary…beyond growth. definitely alotta triangulation with the “eye” and geometric eye in the sky -> always liftoff/ground, fruit/roots. ∞ philosophies. those kinda sounds often bless our head to remind us heads, they peak and peek out of the spectra as explosions. hopefully that translates for you, it will if you are that kind. dig it in headphones.” - matt valentine maximum arousal farm (vermont 2014) “Some people have a hard time picking sides, not me, not here: I’ll take the flip. It starts high on the crazy horse, all gallop and fuzz, and begins to fray in the most glorious way. When the tambourine starts to shake, the jam goes to shambles — they coulda let it in, coulda made some rock heroism out of it, but they let it soak, standing outside, staring through the window as the storm rages on. It’s one of those moments that makes it real clear why MV&EE end up on bills with boundary pushers as often as mellow jammers. Of course, matt and erika being who they are and doing what they do, bring it back home, nice and comfortable like a loaned drug rug on a cold night, with some song stylings that showcase finger picking and ghostly harmonies and that inimitable siren’s wail of EE’s slide. I’ve got plenty of shelf space given over to the road ramblings of the various incarnations of their band, but the studio outings are always something special, and this one gets better with every spin.” - peter meehan/lucky peach (NYC 2014) “brother...u’ve outdone yrself on the ‘alpha’...this is one of the best sounding records i’ve heard in forever...y’ve taken it all to another plane...wow... spectra-4-life…” - matthew “doc” dunn (the wolfking of TO)

TASHI DORJI - 'S/T'

Formats
  • HH01 - LP
    655035210117
Details

First release on Ben Chasny's (Six Organs Of Admittance) label. Tashi Dorji grew up in Bhutan, on the eastern side of the Himalayas. Access to any music created outside the country is limited, as are most cultural options, given the geologically isolation of the country. How Dorji went from a life so remote to developing his innovative and revelatory guitar style is mind-boggling. Yearning for access to the world outside, Dorji pursued and obtained a fully-paid scholarship to a liberal arts school in Asheville, NC, in his early twenties. He’s since settled in there (save a short stint in Maine), soaking up a vast array of music, most notably the works of Derek Bailey and John Zorn. Along the way, Dorji developed a playing style unbound by tradition, yet with a direct line to intuitive artistry. His recordings feature improvisations that spasmodically grow along tangential, surprising paths. All references break loose during a composition, as Dorji keys into his own inner world. After a handful of cassettes on various labels, Dorji presents his first proper album on Hermit Hut, the label created by Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance) and inspired by spreading word of Dorji’s talents. The six compositions here are hand-picked by Dorji and Chasny as the most representative and far-reaching of his recordings. Taken together, they announce a new guitar music unlike anything being made today.

MEATBODIES / WAND - 'VOID'

Formats
  • ITR267 - 7"
Details

The dudes in the Meatbodies and Wand are buddies who go way back. Wand front man Cory Hanson and main Meatbodie Chad Ubovich have been friends since childhood and still remain musical allies. Cory sometimes fills in on lead guitar in the Meatbodies and both guys play together in Mikal Cronin's touring band. Both of their bands have full lengths coming out on In The Red soon! With all of that said, it only made sense to do a split single with the two. As a testimony to the musical psychic connection these sonic brothers have, when faced with the task to come up with a new song for this split on the quick they both wrote songs about the “void” without any knowledge of what the other was doing. The Meatbodies urge you to feed it while Wand wish to be taken back to it. Both sound like an excellent idea. Into the void – now!
