VARIOUS - 'THE INTRODUCTION TO LIVING COUNTRY BLUES USA'

Formats
  • LR711914 - 2xLPs

Details

Living Country Blues USA is a series of albums on L+R Records. The material was collected by German Blues experts Siegfried A. Christmann and Axel Küstner on an extended trip thru the south of the USA in the fall of 1980, in the form of so-called "Field-Recordings" - recordings made in the natural surroundings of the artists and not in the studio. Travelling 10.000 miles (16.000 km) by car in 2 1/2 months, they used 180.000 feet (54 km) of tape and took hundreds of photographs to document various aspects of Country Blues, as well as work songs, fife and drum band music, field hollers and rural Gospel music, performed by 35 artists, some of whom appear on record for the first time…INC MP3 DL

Living Country Blues USA is a series of albums on L+R Records. The material was collected by German Blues experts Siegfried A. Christmann and Axel Küstner on an extended trip thru the south of the USA in the fall of 1980, in the form of so-called "Field-Recordings"… Introducing Bowling Green John & Harmonica Phil Wiggins What is so remarkable about the duo is their intensive commitment to the black Blues and Gospel tradition - without diminishing the quality or spontaneity of their performances. By hearing John Cerpas with his guitar one quickly gets impressed by the power of his playing. Deeply rooted in the so-called "Piedmont" Blues tradition of the East Coast, ragtime influence and complex rhythms produce a strong emphasis on melody - much in contrast to the harsh Mississippi Blues with its hard beat and drive. When recording this album Phil Wiggins was 26 years old and despite his young age he already could be rated as one of the top Blues harp players. Influences include Hammie Nixon, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter and Shakey Hotton. He played alongside Flora Molton, Archie Edwards, Big Chief Ellis, the late Esther Mae "Mother" Scott and John Jackson as well as jamming with such well known Blues veterans as Sunnyland Slim, Johnny Shines and Louisiana Red - shaping his technique to perfection, be it in the Country Blues or with ampli?ed harp in the best Chicago tradition.

BLUES ON HIGHWAY 61 - 'ORIGINAL FIELD RECORDINGS VOL: 2 / LIVING COUNTRY BLUES'

Formats
  • LR713017 - LP
    4003099713017
Details

Living Country Blues USA is a series of albums on L+R Records. The material was collected by German Blues experts Siegfried A. Christmann and Axel Küstner on an extended trip thru the south of the USA in the fall of 1980, in the form of so-called "Field-Recordings" ….. Blues On Highway 61 with James on' Thomas, Sam Chatmon, Walter Brown, Joe Cooper, Cleveland Broomman & Eddie Cusie Feeling lonesome, being down and out, nowhere to go, walking the highway up and down, riding the Greyhound bus, catching a freight train - all central themes in Blues, and the men you can hear on this record have lived the Blues and this was reality to them. The Blues has always been more than just one person's story, they are reflections and descriptions of a common lifestyle and experience. These artists tell the truth - the truth about being a black man in Mississippi, across the United States. The artists you can hear on this record all came from the same region of Mississippi. Their communities were centered around 61 Highway and lay only a couple of miles apart. Many Blues have been made about 61 Highway. Linking rural Louisiana and Mississsippi with northern industrial areas, thousands of blacks have travelled this road in hopes of a better life and future. Walter Brown's "Keep On Walkin"' can be seen as a reflection of their sufferings and struggle, the long road America's blacks had to walk since they were ?rst brought to that country as slaves.

EXHAUSTION - 'BIKER'

Formats
  • AARGHT031 - LP
Details

Biker unleashes seven slabs of free-form guitar and ecstatic No Wave atonality atop giant churning bass and thundering motorik drums. Jensen Tjhung (Deaf Wish, Lower Plenty) and Per Byström (Ooga Boogas, Leather Towel) anchor the blown-out epics with pummelling lock grooves as vocalist/guitarist Duncan Blachford dispenses improvised six-string sizzle in a style that synthesises classic post-Hendrix psych and the reverb/delay clouds of the Mizutani/Haino tradition with the rawness of Bruce Russell. Recorded in gristly no-frills fidelity at the band’s own studio, Biker is a high-potency emission from the deepest reaches of the Melbourne underground.

COOL GHOULS - 'A SWIRLING FIRE BURNING THROUGH THE RYE'

“San Francisco’s Doomed” ... or so they say. There are, however, four Cool Ghouls who will have none of that. Born and raised in Fog Nation’s strip-mall suburbs, these boys dreamed of the day when they would move to Shaky City. San Francisco was their destiny—the town their electric heroes Creedence, Thee Oh Sees, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape, Flamin’ Groovies, etc. call(ed) home. Thank the gods their dreams came true! Their loud guitars, acid riffs, party screams, and stacked-as-fuck three-part vocal harmonies are echoing down the alleys and shaking foundations. A Swirling Fire Burning Through the Rye is Cool Ghouls’ sophomore full-length album, and it rules. Recorded live to tape by San Francisco’s Sonny Smith (Sonny and the Sunsets) and mixed and mastered by Mikey Young (Total Control, Eddy Current Suppression Ring), this record elevates the band’s psychedelic garage jams to a whole new level. Empty Cellar Records is very stoked to present ten new, delectable Cool Ghouls songs brimming with infectious, creative energy. This record is an excellent complement to the never-ending nights of a never-ending summer. San Francisco is still doomed... it always has been and always will be. At least these Cool Ghouls are here to help it go down with just a little bit of true class.

SECRET PYRAMID - 'THE SILENT MARCH / MOVEMENTS OF NIGHT'

Formats
  • SOD110 - 2xCDs
    600197511022
Details

Students of Decay presents a specially priced double-CD issue of Secret Pyramid’s two albums, The Silent March and Movements of Night. Originally released in 2011 on cassette by the Canadian micro- imprint Nice-Up International, The Silent March can be viewed as something of a mission statement for Amir Abbey’s skyriding Secret Pyramid project. Critics have compared his sound to the more blasted entries in the Popul Vuh catalog and to Flying Saucer Attack’s cherished fuzz devotionals, and indeed Abbey’s reverb-drenched songforms and titanic edifices of drone do feel at times as though they’ve been cut from the same cloth. Abbey weaves themes of birth, death, nostalgia and existential dread into an album as cohesive as it is all-consuming, a spell that seeks to simultaneously welcome and protect against darkness in its many forms. 2013’s Movements of Night finds Abbey further develop and refine the haunting, faraway sound-world that earned the aforementioned release well-due praise. Deftly navigating the properties of sleep and unconsciousness, Abbey charts a course that is equal parts harrowing and funereal, tranquil and sublime. Juxtaposing the everyday with the obscured, the half-there melodies and arcs of hazy guitar histrionics dissolve into a more familiar, tangible atmosphere in which radiant drones are tethered to a driving bassline. With Movements of Night, Abbey casts his net into the abyss of the unconscious and returns with a potent paean to the dreamworld.

SECRET PYRAMID - 'THE SILENT MARCH'

Formats
  • SOD109 - LP
    600197510919
Details

Originally released in 2011 on cassette by the Canadian micro-imprint Nice-Up International, The Silent March is the precursor to 2013’s Movements of Night and can be viewed as something of a mission statement for Amir Abbey’s skyriding Secret Pyramid project. Critics have compared the Secret Pyramid sound to the more blasted entries in the Popul Vuh catalog and to Flying Saucer Attack’s cherished fuzz devotionals, and indeed Abbey’s reverb-drenched songforms and titanic edifices of drone do feel at times as though they’ve been cut from the same cloth. Opener “Outside” might be best understood as the soundtrack to slow-motion video footage of a first-person plunge over some impossibly grand waterfall on an endless loop, as tumbling overtones fight for air among turbid plumes of distortion. “Still Return” finds acoustic guitar figures struggling to escape a blinding mist, their resolution finally arriving in the form of the sublime tranquility of the titular track which follows. Abbey weaves themes of birth, death, nostalgia and existential dread into an album as cohesive as it is all-consuming, a spell that seeks to simultaneously welcome and protect against darkness in its many forms. This edition of The Silent March features an improved mix-down by Abbey and a remaster by James Plotkin to insure maximum transport.
