ROSE MCDOWALL - 'DON'T FEAR THE REAPER'
Formats
LSSN030 - 12"
Details
Rose McDowall’s trajectory from punk provocateur to chart-subverting pop star to underground neo-folk legend has been one fraught with strain and adventure. In 2015, Night School Records is attempting to tell the story of this wayward daughter of Glasgow through a schedule of reissues and unreleased material. Record Store Day 2015 sees the first fruit of this collaboration, an official release of the unapproved 12” single of Don’t Fear The Reaper, originally waxed by McDowall in Don’t Fear The Reaper has been remastered and re-edited by legendary engineer and selector Sean Pennycook for 2015. McDowall’s clear-as-crystal vocal performance sails above a latin-flavoured disco beat with the original’s doomy chord changes revitalized into a shiny, gloriously hedonistic brew. Accompanying is the original “Crystal Days,” a track that featured on McDowall’s self-released “Cut With The Cake Knife” demos, a set lost, until now, to history. On the flip Sean P cuts up the original Reaper into an Italo-ized disco re-edit before the instrumental plays out. McDowall’s treatment of Don’t Fear The Reaper speaks volumes of where her head was at in 1988. It was the singer’s first solo release after the break up of Strawberry Switchblade and even then it was unapproved. Rush-released by a collaborator and without her consent, “Reaper” quickly vanished and has become the stuff of legend for pop, disco and Strawberry Switchblade fanatics alike. Now fully approved and with new, minimal artwork by Russell Elder, Rose invites us to take her hand. 600 copies only world wide

KIASMOS - 'LOOPED EP'

Details
*REPRESS* Feat. Remixes from DAUWD and LUBOMYR MELNYK After releasing their debut album of unique Nordic electronic sounds in late 2014, Kiasmos – made up of Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen – return with a special 3-track EP featuring album highlight ‘Looped’ and remixes of album tracks ‘Held’ and ‘Burnt’. Made in Ólafur’s newly build studio in Reykjavík, Iceland, the title track ‘Looped’ was recorded using acoustic instruments next to a variety of synthesizers, drum machines and tape delays. It also features Ólafur performing on the grand piano, producing an ambient, textured sound, which makes it a perfect home listen and equally danceable tune. UK electronic producer Dauwd (Kompakt/Ghostly), who Kiasmos specially selected to perform at their sold out London album release show as well as remix their track, has crafted a chilled club version of ‘Held’. Whilst Ukrainian pianist and fellow Erased Tapes artist Lubomyr Melnyk has created a unique re-interpretation of ‘Burnt’ in his signature “Continuous Music” mode, performed on two pianos. “It was an honour to be asked to remix an artist for Erased Tapes. Both the label and the artists I admire. And it was such a pleasure to work with the source material from Kiasmos. The parts had so much texture and warmth that working with them in my own space was quite inspiring. I tried to respond impulsively to the parts and allow anything to happen. I think I achieved something with a balance of the original vibe and looking in another direction.” – Dauwd “I really enjoy the music of Ólafur and Janus. And this was a wonderful opportunity to take their theme for ‘Burnt’ and turn it into some Continuous Piano. A tiny new cadence crept into the piece. And that this is on vinyl with 24-bit sound is all the better!” – Lubomyr Melnyk “We were very excited to get two of our favourite active musicians to do these remixes for us. Lubomyr providing a very special and unique rework with his double piano recording and Dauwd with a great dance centered remix. Both musicians brought out very interesting things in the originals that we had even missed ourselves.” – Kiasmos 1000 copies worldwide

THE HEADS - 'NOBODY KNOWS'
Formats
ROOSTER21LP - 2xLPs
Details
In 2014 The Heads reissued their 2000 album "Everybody Knows We Got Nowhere" in full remastered / deluxe boset glory, and to much acclaim. In the boxset, they added a 70 minute Compact Disc of demos, unheard versions etc of material pre -2000 recorded in the rehearsal room on a walkman. For RSD 2015, and to celebrate their rare live performances at Roadburn 2015, Simon Price has taken the material he edited for the bonus CD, and added more tracks to the pot. With the mastering expertise / tape polishing skills of Shawn Joseph, Price has created a warts'n'all document of the time in the heads' rehearsal space just prior to the making / construction of the Every Knows album. This double LP is 10 tracks of the Heads in their element, raw and alive in the rehearsal room prior to 2000, tracks being formed, prototype Heads' riffs in the sonic gloop. Hear this era of the Heads in its speaker blowing, walkman warping glory, a true psychedelic rock morass. Wrapped in a Simon Price sleeve, a gatefold sleeve to boot! naturally! A "fin de seicle" of sorts, "Nobody Knows" is a closing chapter, a sonic glossary to the band's Everybody Knows' legacy. 1200 COPIES WORLD WIDE FOR RSD 2015 ON BLACK VINYL, NO DOWNLOAD CARDS/CODES, NO REPRESS. COMES WITH POSTER.

THE RESIDENTS - 'SATISFACTION'

Details
"THE RESIDENTS' 1976 version of The Stones' "Satisfaction" is nearly everything the better known version by DEVO from a year later is not: loose, belligerent, violent and truly fucked-up. A real stick in the eye to everything conventionally tasteful in bicentennial America. Delightfully painful to listen to thanks to Philip "Snakefinger" Lithman's completely unhinged lead guitar and mystery RESIDENT member's menacing vocal, this is a timeless piece of plastic." – Brad Laner

THE DILS - 'I HATE THE RICH'
Formats
SV080 - 7"
857176003805
Details
THE DILS formed in Carlsbad, California in late 1976, although they soon relocated to San Francisco (and later Los Angeles) to become one of the preeminent bands in early West Coast punk. Their debut 45 appeared on What Records?, the same label that released THE GERMS' Forming single. While "I Hate The Rich" combines catchy melodies with a perfectly punk politique, "You're Not Blank (So Baby We're Through)" features brothers Chip and Tony Kinman's harmonizing vocals and the group's tight, breakneck rhythms.

X - 'ADULT BOOKS'
Formats
SV081 - 7"
857176003812
Details
Formed in 1977, X quickly established themselves as one of the best bands in LA's flourishing first wave punk scene. Featuring vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist/bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom, and drummer DJ Bonebrake, their debut 45 was released on the seminal Dangerhouse label in 1978. While these songs were later re-recorded for their second album, the versions on Adult Books / We're Desperate reveal X's raw talent for totally sincere songwriting and stripped-down rock n' roll.

FLIPPER - 'LOVE CANAL'
Formats
SV082 - 7"
857176003829
Details
FLIPPER formed in San Francisco in 1979 on the cusp of Ronald Reagan's presidency. It seems fitting that their debut single (originally released on Subterranean in 1981) turns environmental disaster into the band's modus operandi. Chorus-less and catchy-as-hell, "Love Canal" features all that would become FLIPPER trademarks in four art-damaged minutes: knuckle-dragging tempo, ear-splitting feedback, basslines to crash your car to and a depraved frontman wailing about uncomfortable American matters. "Ha Ha Ha" is even more direct in its intent, mocking suburbia with a flat, almost psychotic laugh.
