AL LOVER - 'CAVE RITUAL'

Formats
  • SBR-014 - LP
Details

BACK IN STOCK ON BLACK VINYL! Al Lover is a producer from San Francisco, but there’s more layers to his wall of sound than meets the ear. Over the last few years he has gained much notoriety for his melding of contemporary and past garage and psychedelic rock into spaced out abrasive beats. Often compared to producers like Edan, J-dilla and Gaslamp Killer, Al gravitates towards a sound composed of crunchy drums, shaky percussion, chopped samples and layers of textured effects building on the psychedelic music of the past and present. His first release through Stolen Body Records will come out on January 26th and is called Cave Ritual. COLORED PURPLE IN GREEN VINYL!

PAPER DOLLHOUSE - 'AEONFLOWER'

Formats
  • LSSN029 - LP
Details

An exploration of warped, dream-like atmosphere and taught, noise-ingrained electronics, Paper Dollhouse has evolved from the solo work of Astrud Steehouder into an expansive, cinematic project now involving visual artist Nina Bosnic. Recorded with a stronger focus on electronic processes and with a deeper, light-starved aesthetic, Aeonflower’s emboldened use of crushed-noise dynamics takes the London-based group’s debut “A Box Painted Black” (2011, Bird/Finders Keepers) frame into darker, murkier and more thrilling territory. Aeonflower is the slow decent of a newly-discorporated spirit into a fogged, neon-lagoon, a drowned world still-lit. If the first LP was a box of raw secrets with hints of obscured folk roots, Aeonflower is the endless rain of expression, experience and change. On this outing both artists’ vocals are expressive, forgoing complex lyrical concerns for minimal text invested with emotive power. Opener Oracle bleeds into Stand, the first of Steehouder’s haunted vocals, a fragile minimalism augmented with barren guitar. Helios sees a drum-machine kick + ride cymbal pin down an dark, enveloping vocal duet until Psyche obliterates it all with billowing noise, a thrilling shock to the system. The swirling synths and suppressed emotion of Your Heart peak in the centerpiece Diane, a shadowy piece highlighting Steehouder’s minimalist approach. Side 2 acts as a mini-suite, with Diamanda Galas-inspired vocal abstractions and walls of sound coming down with stand out ambient track Black Flowers. Dark and light interplay beautifully on album closer Siren, a turbulent if ambiguous build -up of harmony and noise. A cinematic portrayal of an internal hinterland, Aeonflower is a complete, encompassing world.

LANTERNA - 'BACKYARDS'

Details

Independent Project Records is pleased to announce a vinyl edition of Backyards, the beautiful new album from Champaign, Illinois’ Lanterna. On the ten-song collection (licensed from Badman Recording Company’s instrumental label Jemez Mountain), multi-instrumentalist Henry Frayne crafts landscape of warm, instrumental tapestries. Backyards is the fifth Lanterna album to be released by Badman / Jemez Mountain, and the first of them to be released on vinyl. For Frayne, the inception of Backyards began almost a decade ago and is a culmination of his career as a versatile musician best known for blending genres and guitar styles to create layers of airy overtones. Frayne composed the underlying textures of the record with a heavy influence from the Nashville tuning—the practice of utilizing very light strings to produce an angelic sound. Frayne learned the technique from bandmate Brendan Gamble during their time in The Moon Seven Times. The cinematic photos of Boston-based Kevin Salemme have graced several Lanterna releases and Backyards is no exception. Bruce Licher, guitarist of the band Scenic and of Licher Art & Design (and of Independent Project fame) once again stepped in to design the album artwork. Lanterna has always been about taking a journey through sound, and through these photographic images Salemme and Licher hold up their end of the bargain. “Flurries of rippling arpeggios, rich ringing chord clusters and long, sustained single notes that hang in the air” —San Francisco Chronicle

Hairy Chapter was found in 1969 by Harry Unte (Vocals), Harry Titlbach (Guitar), Rudolf Oldenburg (Bass) und Rudi Haubold (Drums). The band existed for only two years and released two albums. Can't Get Through was their second album which they recorded with engineer & producer Dieter Dierks. Dierks introduced strong Psychedelic Rock elements into the obvious straight Blues Rock sound of Hairy Chapter. He created a record, which combines Blues Rock with strong Elements of Hard- and Krautrock. Though for most critics the band never was considered to be real Krautrock. 180g Vinyl, blue vinyl.

NEKTAR - 'A TAB IN THE OCEAN'

Formats

Details

In the early 70’s Nektar were one of the most popular bands of the German underground, along with Amon Düül II, Can and Guru Guru. In the beginning, however, only few people knew that they weren't Germans at all, but came from England. In Hamburg Nektar met their lighting specialist Mick Brockett, who had worked with Pink Floyd in the end of the 1960’s. In no time Nektar became famous not only for their excellent music but for their spectacular light show on stage. In early 1971  producer Peter Hauke caught notice of the band and arranged contact with bacillus records. Tab in the Ocean was a bombshell among Nektar fans. The album paved the way for Nektar's future success both in- and outside Germany. The exciting artwork by psychedelic painter Helmut Wenske, who was still at the beginning of his career back then. Listening to the album today, it's magic continues and is a delight not just for fans of Krautrock or Psych! Gatefold 350g, Inside Out, 180 g, magenta vinyl including a download code. EPSILON - 'EPSILON'

Details

The great debut-album of German Prog-Rock legend Epsilon from 1971! Epsilon was founded 1970 in Marburg, Germany. The band consisted of Michael Winzkowski (Ex-Orange Peel, Nosferatu), Walter Ortel, Michael Ertl and Hartmut Pfannmüller. Their successful debut-album was originally released in March 1971, three month after the band went into the studio. All songs are sang in English language and the album hardly has anything to do with the (over)experimental Krautrock genre. But it can be easily compared with such underground, organ-oriented bands from UK as "Atomic Rooster", "Cressida", "Beggar's Opera", "Fantasy", "Still Life", "Argent", "Bodkin" and even "The Nice". For fans of organ-driven heavy prog and classic rock! Includes their stunning cover version of Rolling Stones' classic hit "Paint it black" under the title "Paint it black or white"! With bonus-track "I’m not my brothers keeper" that was previously released only on 7" vinyl single in 1971. 140 gr Vinyl, Gatefold + MP3 Download

MESSAGE are similar in sound to NEKTAR though slightly heavier, darker, jazzier and rawer. Originally a German-British band, their music oscillates between a proto heavy rock and psychedelic rock. "From Books And Dreams" was recorded under the direction of the famous musical engineer Dieter Dierks, who recorded many "Krautrock" Bands between '69 and '75 (Nektar, Amon Düül, Tangerine Dream, Guru Guru etc.). The result is very melodic, with a ravishing and an accomplished lyrical sense of composition. Message are delivering impressive, extended, mainly instrumental heavy/ space rock tracks which can be compared (in some parts) to NEKTAR's first effort. “SUNDAY NIGHT AT LONDON ROUNDHOUSE “ The highly acclaimed concert from 1973 for the first time on double-vinyl! When Nektars "Live At London Roundhouse" was released in 1974 there was a bit of confusion going on because only one side contained recordings of the concert. In 2002 more recordings of the Roundhouse concert were uncovered and the band released a remastered full double-cd with roundhouse recordings only. Vintage Piss is the baby whose seed was planted on the 2003 Rocket From The Crypt US tour, which also paired some members of the band with legendary 1970s New York outta control rock ’n’ roller Sonny Vincent. After the Swami release of Vincent’s previous band Testors’ Complete Discography, Speedo (John Reis), Ruby Mars (Mario Rubalcaba) and The Notorious ND (Andy Stamets) served as the man’s backing band and slashed through his Testors repertoire resulting in a primo barrage of 1970s neo-proto-punk. After one particularly meaty performance in Chicago amidst high fives and ass slaps signifying a job well done, the inspiration to write and record new songs struck. Back in San Diego, late 2003, the group incubated in Drag Racist Studio (where Rocket From The Crypt recorded Live From Camp X-Ray and Hot Snakes Suicide Invoice). They employed a steam-of-consciousness approach to making noise by recording songs and ideas live in the studio without rehearsal. With Vincent’s voice and blazing, James Williamsonesque Les Paul attack leading the way, the band followed him into the punk abyss, emerging with a record that is both Sonny Vincent and Rocket From The Crypt. Unfortunately, the studio and Swami Records became buried by transition. It was to be the last thing recorded at Drag Racist before the studio shut its doors. The recording lay dormant, unmixed and unfinished. With the 2013 reformation of Rocket From the Crypt and the continued rerelease of Sonny Vincent and Testors material, a rekindled interest in the lost artifact of rock ’n’ roll led Swami to revisit these masters eleven years later. Tapes in various state of degradation were baked and restored to playability, resulting in the unearthing of a true forgotten gem. Produced and recorded by John Reis, mixed by Ben Moore, mastered by Dave Gardner at Magneto Mastering and featuring artwork by savage visionary Chris WeThreeClub, Vintage Piss is essential for fans of Rocket From The Crypt, Sonny Vincent, Testors and those attracted to the maverick, Cro-Magnon spirit of punk rock’s beginnings.

No Fans Compendium is a deluxe, limited-edition seven-disc set of Richard Youngs’s recordings for his long-running private No Fans label. Five CDs are the artist’s personal selection from his No Fans releases, all of which were issued in tiny editions (20-50 copies) and only available for sale at his rare shows or at Glasgow’s now-defunct Volcanic Tongue shop. In addition, Youngs has included two full discs of material previously unavailable in any form: a recording from 1989 predating his earliest widely known work, and a new recording from late 2014. Unbeatable as a survey of Youngs’s career, everything here is of equal quality to his over-the-counter releases. In keeping with his penchant for unpredictable stylistic mashups and reinventions, there are folky laments, achingly beautiful “songs,” tape collage, rude prog noise, minimalist experiments, multi-tracked vocals, etc. Each disc is housed in an individual card folio with artwork repurposed from the original releases.

Blow-out enthusiasts, make ready to scarf this down without chewing: “How many licks does it take to get to the spider egg in the center of this sugar bomb? “You got the jitters, and dude, there’s blood on your shirt. “I like gore with my goth. “Hey, you got your pop sensibilities on my explosion!” Strong vocals à la Modern English, back-beat complete and foamy bass bleached onto half-inch tape specially for Castle Face. Seven headstrong tunes to clatter your phonograph needle. I’ve always loved Matt Jones’s (ex- Blasted Canyons) vocal stylings, rich with tenor muscle flexes. Over the top in its endeavors and reaching, always reaching. Primal gas-guzzler drumming, center speaker from Adam Cimino sets the ear up for a beating. And hell, it’s got the old (and I mean old) bass player, Mark Kaiser, from Mayyors; solid-state aggression at its mid-low, knuckle-dragging finest. A slap in the brain done up nicely here on wax. Your guide is always in the shadows, you can’t make out his face but you hear his crazed diatribe as he wards off all affronts. Razor-sharp punk at its core, Fight Fire is fleshed out with inventive and catchy synth work—and the floating bits of atmospheric expansion between tracks only heighten the paranoid atmosphere. These tunes have a sci-fi depth, a moody bite, and a startling clarity sharpened to a point by the wizard hand of Chris Woodhouse, who helmed the magnetization. ALEX COBB - 'CHANTEPLEURE'

Formats
  • SOD113 - LP

Details

The trajectory of Alex Cobb’s music over the course of the last decade could be viewed as a distillation of tone and atmosphere to arrive at Chantepleure, his most optimistic and sanguine musical statement to date. The album, however, was created at a time of heartache, isolation and emotional upheaval and acts as a balm of tender tones where abstract guitar lines circle and suspend in a kind of refined elegance. Noise, once a hallmark of Cobb’s music, has not been entirely removed, but manifests here in a different form. A delicate dissonance shades the edges of the these four tracks, providing textural color and gorgeously offsetting the lush nature of the music. Even in short spans, this approach yields substantial results. At three and a half minutes, “Disporting with a Shadow” pulls back the curtain just enough to let flecks of natural guitar notes and traces of alluring melody seep into the mix. The album closes with the side-long “Path of Appearance,” a cathartic composition that is best described as a poem of overtones which, like the rest of the album, is sourced from electric guitar and minimal effects but feels more akin to the sun stretching to fill all corners of a darkened room. A testament to sonic refinement, a way of coping, an exciting step forward for an established artist—the minimalist Chantepleure is all of these things.

Imagine a version of Julio Cortázar’s The Night Face Up where there is no motorcycle crash and no series of dreams about trying to outrun Aztec warriors determined to capture you for human sacrifice. There is still darkness in this story—the darkness of living in post-Reagan America, existential dread, the futility of living one’s dreams and still waking up every day. Devil Worshipper is the dream that swirls and reflects landscapes in chrome as snakes dance in your spine. THE BLOOD TUB ORCHESTRA - 'WE'RE GLAD YOU'VE GOT A GUN'

Formats
  • PHOER0027 - 10"
  • PHOER0028 - CD
Details

The Blood Tub Orchestra, set to be 2015’s most interesting and innovative outfit, are delighting and enthralling listeners with their wholly unique idea. Unearthing Victorian and Edwardian music gems from often long-forgotten artists, The Blood Tub Orchestra evolve the pieces into fully-formed 21st century creations that still possess the characteristics and soul of the original historic works. The ghost is firmly spooking the machinery. When we look into our histories, we often do so with a rose-tinted and fantastical idealism of what entailed in those previous years, belying the actual truth whilst embracing the myths. This music most certanly isnt that! With the cosy mothball whiff of fancy dress nostalgia removed, a straight bare knuckle fight between the song and the performers is left to find its place creating the most mouthwatering proposition since The Rolling Stones re-introduced Blues to America. Great Britain, this means you! The songs on this EP are selected for their timeless relevance and irreverance, We’re Glad You’ve Got A Gun, of which no known original recordings exist, is a chilling call to arms propaganda song aimed at the popular music markets of it’s day. The Modern Mephistopheles is a damning a bitter whimsical mocking version of a song about poverty and ‘domestic bliss’ that was popular in its day. The Blood Tub Orchestra is comprised of a ragtag assortment of musical waistrels. Tim Whelan (Transglobal Underground, Furniture etc), Ashley Davies (Project Dark, London Dirthole Company etc), Kirsten Reynolds (Project Dark, LDC etc), Rob Lewis (Pulkas, LDC etc), Debbie Smith (Echobelly, Ye Nuns etc) plus various guests

HERCULES II - 'HERCULANEUM'

Formats
  • RWR11 - LP
  • RWR11BOX - BOXSET
Details

Hercules II is the long term project of C. Poulsen, an elusive Danish recording artist. Previous short run releases have mostly been on Køleskab Dommedag as well as a split 7” with Atomic Suplex on Radiowave in 2009. Hercules II has always had an ever evolving one-off line up, this one sees Ashley Davies and Rob Lewis reuniting with C. along with fellow London Dirthole Co. members GG and Roger Carne; Sebastian Büttrich formerly of Danish noise group 18th Dye; former Nikki Sudden cohort Andy Bean; Keith Goldhanger formerly of noise terrorists Headbutt and last but not least another noisenik oddball, Matt from Black Time, completing an incendiary line up of very noisy bastards…2 drums, 2 bass and 5 guitars for clarification. Hercules II serve up a maelstrom of heavy dramatic pulsating instrumentals. The crunching bass drives the engine as the slave ship drums pound and the guitars weave, spurt and spiral shards of molten lava all over the decks as the ship lurches from one massive wave to another File under: Heavy Petting The Hercules LP is on splatter vinyl (clear + black) in a clear sleeve and looks great. The Hercules box set is limited to 50 copies and contains the splatter vinyl + CDR + badge + patch + A4 poster. The lid of the box has a metallic sticker. (WE ARE ONLY GETTING 15 OF THE BOXSET)

APOSTILLE - 'POWERLESS'

Formats
  • LSSN034 - LP
Details

Apostille is the solo musical guise of Glaswegian DIY protagonist Michael Kasparis. Initially a creative harbour from his groups Please and The Lowest Form, Apostille has grown into an explosive synth-punk project unafraid of both physicality and emotional leakage. Powerless is Kasparis’ first album proper, following exploratory works on Goaty Tapes and Clan Destine, and is Apostille’s first release on his own Night School Records. Fiercely independent in practice and execution, Apostille’s stated purpose is to bridge the gap between audience and performer, to connect through the fog of power structures and post-modernism; to ferment a direct pop music unconcerned with control. Powerless explodes with Life - a rage of brilliance that acts as a communal outlet of shared frustration and confusion at the world. At moments haiku-like mantras lament over a damaged industrial de-composition as in The Collector, at other times there’s a Depeche Modish fragility as in Side 2 opener Deserter. In warped, subterranean ballad Olivia’s Eyes an almost decapitated duet details criminal instincts, while live favourite Slurry demolishes proceedings with a Suicide-like take on Chicago house; a mammoth journey into the psyche of a ‘Falling Down’ prototype, lost in a world of perpetual motion, speeding up and uncaring. Touchstones of early Mute artists like Fad Gadget can be found in Apostille’s overwhelmingly physical live performances but like Tovey’s best work, or perhaps that of Crash Course in Science, there’s a depth on record that paints in more complex colours.
