NOTS - 'VIRGIN MARY'

Formats
  • 119GONE - 7"
Details

**NOW IN STOCK**“Virgin Mary” is the synth-induced followup single to Nots’ debut LP, We Are Nots. Recorded half on Natalie Hoffmann’s four-track in the industrial dazed storage unit where the band practices, and half in Burgundy Studios with Keith Cooper (the rock ’n’ roll warlock responsible for capturing the two previous Nots 45-RPM assaults), “Virgin Mary” delivers hellish synth and guitar that swirls around the hypnotic rhythm section as the band simmers into the sonic void. “[‘Virgin Mary’] finds the band back in the studio with Keith Cooper, the guy who recorded their first two singles. While it certainly sounds like a Nots song, there’s a significant departure from We Are Nots: Alexandra Eastburn’s synthesizer isn’t centrally responsible for the song’s melody. Instead, it burbles in the background, giving the track an unsettling and celestial undertone. And Natalie Hoffmann’s voice howls, her ever-unsteady and unpredictable guitar needles into the frame. Here, the rhythm section, Charlotte Watson and Madison Farmer, come off as the track’s ever-churning center. Nots aren’t exactly reinventing themselves—it’s familiar, but feels new. If this is a portent of their next moves, though, the impending chaos ought to be interesting.” —Pitchfork

ATLAS - 'ATLAS'

Details

180g - Download code - Remastered ATLAS was a short lived Austrian band project that combined Jazz and Soul Funk in a unique way. The band was active from 1975 to 1978. The group consisted of various musicians from Vienna and Lower Austria who released one LP in small quantites in 1977. Responsible for the recording was Ernie Seuberth who later produced lots of Austrian New Wave records in his Viennese Gorilla studio. The album contains a great cover [XTR] version of AIN'T NO SUNSHINE by BILL WITHERS. Two tracks on this album were sampled by Australian band GOTYE for their 2011 album MAKING MIRRORS: PLAY IT COOL (featured on SMOKE & MIRRORS) & WE ARE HAPPY (featured on IN YOUR LIGHT).

COUNTRY TEASERS - 'SCIENCE HAT ARTIST CUBE MORAL NOSEBLEED EMPIRE'

Details

REPRESSED AND AVAILABLE ON VINYL FOR FIRST TIME IN AGES!! The COUNTRY TEASERS are best known for their stunning output on the Crypt and Fat Possum labels. How a band of Scots and Londoners crazily influenced by the likes of The Fall, Joy Division, Devo, Bauhaus, hip hop and country & western music wound up recording for labels best known for American rootsy-down-home-style output is anyone's guess. But here they are again with their most expansive and eclectic endeavor to date. Science Hat Artistic Cube Moral Nosebleed Empire collects obscure singles, demos, outtakes and home recordings spanning the band's seven-year existence. 'Teasers front man Ben Wallers painstakingly pored through nearly twenty hours of material to find the best forty selections for the vinyl, and twenty for the CD, the concept being that each set of ten tracks represents a complete album. All together: "huh?" Wallers insists the double-vinyl set is actually four albums—pressed in an edition of one-thousand in a beautiful color gatefold jacket, by the way—and the compact disc, with twenty tracks extracted from that collection, is actually two albums. Science Hat Artistic Cube Moral Nosebleed Empire offers the broadest range of the Country Teasers' styles, from the most savagely raw post-punk stomps to experimental electronic blow-outs. This collection is absolute proof that the Country Teasers are one of the most original bands around today. * Popular group with previous releases on Crypt and Fat Possum * Brilliant (and until now) underappreciated band

ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS - 'A SHIMMERING REPLICA'

Formats
  • VHF138 - LP W/ CD
    783881013818
Details

On the cover of the latest wire!!!! Instock next week….. This first-ever VHF release by the 21-years-running Ashtray Navigations brings one more core piece of the UK freakout underground back to the mothership. With a discography that boggles even the most ardent Discogs user and an on-point WTF graphic sensibility, Ash Nav fits perfectly into the extremely fertile and prolific scene that has produced titans like Sunroof! and Vibracathedral Orchestra. On this generous 100-minute package, Phil Todd and Melanie O’Dubshlaine essay a kind of guitarand- electronics exotica with burbling rhythms, Heldonlike laser guitar leads, field recordings, synth racket, etc. The totally fun take on Les Baxter’s all-time classic “Quiet Village” (here wittily retitled “Quite Village”) is a good example of the explorer spirit at work. Considering the amount of unhinged psychedelic fuzzwah lead damage laid out across this thing, it’s arguably the most effusive guitar heroics record of the genre, hopefully inspiring a new generation of young rockers out there to get on the bus.
