WOOLEN MEN - 'TEMPORARY MONUMENT'

Details

“Our hometown has been buried under an avalanche of condos and pointless businesses catering to the newly rich. Noise complaints shut down our shows and pull the plug on countless DIY venues. The places where we lived are being torn down; the rent keeps climbing up. Born too soon or too late; the recession’s effect on our youth was as invisible as it it was profound. “Music today is rendered powerless—white noise made in the echo chamber, for the great Smooth Face that gazes once and moves on. So here it comes, some noise from the dustbin. The internet is a sham: Temporary Monument, we made it for ourselves. Look us in the eyes and tell us you’re not getting old.” —Woolen Men

1099 - 'YOUNG PINES'

Formats
  • LYTLP001 - LP W/ CD
    036663952226
Details

Norwegian instrumental rockers 1099 have been around for over ten years. Two EPs were released in the late part of the 2000s before their debut album, the self-titled «1099», arrived in February 2013, both digital and on vinyl. 1099`s second album «Young Pines» was released digitally in February – and now the double LP edition will be available from late August. It encompasses eight tracks for a total of over an hour`s worth of music. On this record the band wanted extra focus on melodies and structure, but without compromising the dynamics and huge sound they are known for. Early reviews have noted the ever-changing palette in moods and sounds on the album, this being a testament to the variation and creativity found on «Young Pines». «Young Pines» was recorded and mixed in their hometown Trondheim by Håkon Aaltvedt (Tuna Laguna), and produced by 1099 and Aaltvedt. The album was mastered at Golden Mastering in California. 1099 is drummer Pål Leer, bassist Lars-Erik Berg, and guitarists Anders Kalland and Kristian Krokfoss. As per usual the band asked good friends and musicians to contribute to the record. Nikolai Sødahl plays the electric piano, and Jørund Waagø adds strings, as well as vocals and additional guitars. Kåre Kolve - the jazz saxophonist famous from Mezzoforte, Lava and his own band - adds saxophones and flutes to several of the tracks, giving them a distinct sound different from almost any other music in the same genre. «Young Pines» will be released on vinyl in early September through the band`s own label «-lyte», and distributed throughout Europe by «Stickman Records». They will play several concerts in Norway in the end of September and beginning of October. The complete album is available for streaming and as a name-your-price download at www.1099.bandcamp.com.

NATURAL SNOW BUILDINGS - 'TERROR'S HORNS'

After a string of Natural Snow Buildings reissues, each more elaborate then the last, Ba Da Bing presents their first ever release of new material from the band. For a group known for its use of horror imagery and lyricism, perhaps the most shocking thing of all is that this album clocks in at just under 45 minutes. If there ever was a release that served as the proper entry point for Natural Snow Buildings, Terror’s Horns is it. It would be a stretch to call this Mehdi Ameziane and Solange Gularte’s pop record, for Terror’s Horns continues the duo’s tradition of combining many layers into sometimes blissful, sometimes contemplative, often menacing conditions. Stringed instruments trill, percussion gongs, feedback hisses and vocals maintain near monotone as if in a cultish trance. The songs still unveil themselves slowly, and the album’s progression lends the impression of descending down through the depths, past hidden cavities and chambers never to be unseen once experienced. Terror’s Horns features new artwork by Gularte that pays tribute to the backwoods horror of massacres involving chainsaws.

SEWERS - 'WEIGHT'

Formats
  • HOMELESS18 - LP
    9342478005585
Details

Saddle-up for Sewers ‘Weight’ LP, for the outback cowboy is dead, this is a completely different smelly log-ride. Bolstered by the recruitment of a second guitarist the band has been able to morph into a less rigid outfit. Releasing the vocalist to do whatever he pleases. The enema has typically been employed by new-age clinics but here Sewers usurp this tool to let go of their old influences. Cleansed, they hone in on their own sound. Each track is a shake of the magic 8-ball forcing you to guess again. Sewers are all too aware of the scorn and malevolence that oozes through every person’s pipes but rather than displacing, they want to share and explore the burden. The rats are still scurrying around the tunnels but now the sludge has reached such pressure that it burst the pipes flush into our clean drinking water! Fear these miscreant mutants as they stick their arms’ out of the manhole looking to snatch a passer-by’s leg. “These new tunes show an evolved band bringing you some of the finest Australian outsider scuzz heard this decade of the 21st Century. Only an infuriatingly indifferent place like Brisbane could give rise to these disillusioned guitar slingin' goon sackers, and the sonic nihilism on display here is a glorious call to arms for the disaffected. This release will hopefully continue to pump Sewers unique brand of aural sewerage into the ears of the small but loyal army of weirdos and freaks synonymous with good taste and eventual cultural progress.” – Matt Kennedy (Kitchens Floor) • second album on Homeless by Brisbane noise-punk miscreants • limited to 300 copies only • includes download code • toured USA July '15 • RIYL: Country Teasers, The Fall, King Snake Roost, Lubricated Goat

hMAS - 'FEAR GOD HONOUR THE KING'

Formats
  • HOMELESS17 - LP
    9342478005578
Details

Having brought legendary Tasmanian acts The Stickmen, Dacios and Night Terrors to vinyl and the accompanying wider audience, Homeless now presents its FIRST ARCHIVAL RELEASE – the art-damaged spazz-punk of h M A S – with their unreleased LP, Fear God Honour The King. Almost two decades after being recorded, this album of lost recordings will be issued on vinyl (or any format) for the first time! Formed in the early '90s amongst the small town confines on the NW coast of Tasmania, Ben Crothers and Duncan Robinson found a new beginning in the music handed down from Ben’s older sister. Anything that came from reading NME and Select got them buying and listening to everything from Pixies, They Might Be Giants and Devo to XTC, Buzzcocks, Wire and Black Sabbath, not forgetting Tlot Tlot. In the time since its recording in 1997, the original master tapes have been lost and this single attempt at a mix is all that remains. In a way this makes Fear God Honour The King exactly like everything h M A S had always done before - spontaneous but flawed, pointless but essential. “While the rest of the world was caught up in grunge, Britpop or the Spice Girls or intentionally reacting against these things, Duncan Robinson and Ben Crothers were listening to Devo and Pixies, obsessing about other Hobart bands, watching lots of David Lynch, consuming sherbet at an unhealthy rate and making a virtue out of short attention spans. The music that emerged at a stunning rate, sounded something like the cast of Rugrats scoring Japanese advertisements with a Casiotone, a broken guitar and the world's oldest drum machine.” - Andy Hazel • archival recording from 1997, previously unreleased • limited to 300 copies only • includes download code with bonus cassette-only albums h M A S...Goes Pop! and The Computer Tape • inner sleeve with liner notes by Julian Teakle (Native Cats, The Frustrations) and Andy Hazel • remixed and remastered by Mikey Young and Ben Crothers • RIYL: Wire, No Trend, Dinosaur Jr., Tlot Tlot

ZIG ZAGS - 'SLIME'

Formats
  • FC034 - 7"
    655035003474
Details

***Los Angeles scuzz punks Zig Zags are back in action! Famous Class Records releases 4 songs bursting with more metal, punk, hardcore, pop and 7 Seconds covers, than your human mind can handle. Beware of Cronenberg-style head explosions! Opening track, “Gröth” kicks things off with fuzzed-out bass over hardcore riffing. Next comes “Slime” which sounds like early Metallica fighting off a gang of Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers! The B-side finds Zig Zags veering into classic pop/punk territory with the irresistible, “Sunken City”, an ode to San Pedro and their heroes in The Minutemen. And finally - the worship culminates in a cover of the 7 Seconds track “We’re Gonna Fight” - this one recorded alive and on the airwaves. So turn up the stereo… and flip the fuck out! Zig Zags started in a room lit by a single green light, going on to record a song with Iggy Pop and an album with Ty Segall, from playing house parties for pizza to staring off the stage at the Fillmore West. Theirs is the nightmare of the insane and the all-too-normal, the Bermuda Triangle between sci-fi and lo-fi and no-budget, the Twilight Zone twist ending where it turns out everyone ELSE was an alien the whole time. When Cliff Burton wore that Misfits shirt? Zig Zags. When the Emergency Broadcast System interrupts that John Carpenter movie? Zig Zags. When a soggy pile of Thrasher mags and Jack Kirby comics spill out of a dumpster behind the Sunday School? Zig Zags. When the Ramones were scared of the basement and the Angry Samoans couldn’t find the right side of their mind? Zig Zags. When a kid breaks his elbow copying a WWF heel’s piledriver and starts laughing instead of crying? Zig Zags. And when the electricity goes off forever and torchlight reflects off chrome? Zig Zags. They chainsaw through weirdo film and caveman rock and space noise and make smart sound so dumb it turns inside-out and becomes...brilliant. Alternative
