Housed in a gatefold jacket for special re-release, this compilation features the truly intergalactic Float Along – Fill Your Lungs (dateline September 2013) together with its sister album Oddments (dateline Match 2014). The Melbourne, Australia, seven-piece just finished their maiden North American tour, including a run of club dates along with appearances at Austin Psych Fest, Canadian Music Week and a slot at Northside Festival alongside Thee Oh Sees, Mac Demarco, Omar Souleyman and more. The remainder of King Gizzard’s American vacation saw them holed up in Sky Lodge in the Catskills for a month, recording what will be their sixth LP (tentatively scheduled for early 2015 release). They have also just recorded their fifth LP at Daptone in Brooklyn, due out at the end of 2014. The band return to Australia for the rest of the summer before heading back Stateside in October to open a White Fence tour, and then a European tour in November, including a slot at the Iceland Airwaves Festival. In short, there is no slowing this band down. Float along and fill your ears.

**Shipping to stores 23rd Oct** "Roughnecks and Roustabouts is the apex of what has been a remarkable artistic resurgence from original member Of Dexys Midnight Runners - Pete Williams – from being part of the creative triptych with Mick Talbot and Kevin Rowland that produced the last Dexys album “One Day I’m Going to Soar” - to second lead vocalist and on stage super-ego to Rowland in the much acclaimed live performance of that album, with some definitive remake - remodelling of some Dexys classics in the acclaimed tour that followed the release of ODIGS culminating in the Duke of York live shows that were filmed for the “ Nowhere is Home” film and live album, and a headline slot at Glastonbury 2014. Williams’ first solo album “See” was a deep dark truthful mirror that was full of complex songs of the heart and soul that dealt with such subjects such as domestic abuse, paternal angst, - and personal loss that it articulates with an eye dampening profundity, never more remarkably than in the emotive upper cut of “Suddenly Shattered” that is the albums penultimate cut. Roughnecks and Roustabouts is the spring and summer to the sometimes bleak midwinter of See. Articulating the joy of escaping the mundane working class experience of factory drudgery by playing in a band, that the “work retire expire” line from First Real Job sums up so succinctly . The album opener “Breath My Love” captures this flight to freedom perfectly – opening with the noise of a Black Country drop forge till Williams’ perfectly formed melodic bass cuts through the mix and takes us on a soaring ethereal trip of optimism and hope mirroring his personal escape plan. La Cienega Song about a girl who “wore out her knees in the Florida Keys” that swirls around like carnival waltzers driven by Mick Talbot’s keyboards that are just one part of the musical treat that this album delivers – and keeps delivering – for this is an album that seems to constantly reveal new hidden musical depths that betray the mainly “live in the studio” recording that keeps the infectious energy of the band bursting from the speakers - Williams has got a crack core of musicians that bring his hook-laden songs to vivid shimmering life. From the sturm and twang guitars of Shez Sheridan (of whom Richard Hawley says “Shez Sheridan, one of the best musicians I've ever worked with, phenomenal guitarist”) – that are subtle, nuanced and constantly inventive. Williams’ bass connects – conspires and connives with Dean Beresford’s (another fixture in the Richard Hawley Band) drums to give these songs a swing and verve that only adds to the life affirming joy this album bursts with. So get in on the best kept musical secret in Birmingham – enjoy an album packed with seemingly recondite musical ingenuity – an album of uncommon musical depth that will put a smile on your face while you wonder why this album isn’t spoke of along with the prime time works of Costello, Hawley, Squeeze – go on it’ll make your summer holiday complete. The Ty Rex corner of Ty Segall’s oeuvre represents the nom-de-rock behind which the artist puts his spin on favored Tyrannosaurus Rex and T. Rex compositions. With previous releases now dwelling in out-of-print nether-regions, the album compiles the six-song Ty Rex EP (a.k.a. Ty Rex I, originally released by Goner as a limited edition 12-inch for Record Store Day 2011) and the two-song Ty Rex II 7-inch (RSD 2013). As if this wasn’t enough of a corrective gesture, Ty Rex is expanded to include a previously-unreleased cover as a bonus—but first… For those who missed out on this nook of Segall’s rapidly-growing footprint across the rock landscape, here is a cursory rundown: The compilation showcases a nice balance between T. Rex’s ’67-70 psych-folk incarnation under the name Tyrannosaurus Rex and the better-known pioneering and perfecting of glam-rock that defined the initial ’71-73 era under the shortened T. Rex moniker. Kicking things off is the thick, woozily rocking interpretation of “Fist Heart Mighty Dawn Dart,” one of two covers pulled from Tyrannosaurus Rex’s fourth and best album, 1970’s A Beard of Stars. Segall then double-dips into the consummate T. Rex (and for that matter, the entire glam-rock movement) achievement, The Slider, with a rendition of “Buick MacKane” followed by an excellent dirtying-up of the title track. Clearly executed with the ear and understanding of a super-fan, next up is Segall’s awesome tackling of “Woodland Rock” an Electric Warrior outtake that also surfaced on the B-side to 1971’s non-album “Hot Love” single. Returning to Tyrannosaurus Rex fare for the two tracks that originally concluded the Ty Rex I EP, “Salamanda Palaganda” originates from 1968’s Prophets, Seers & Sages: The Angels of the Ages and “Elemental Child” from A Beard of Stars. “Cat Black” (from Tyrannosaurus Rex’s 1969 album, Unicorn) and Electric Warrior’s closing song “The Motivator” follow, before wrapping up this compilation of Ty-Rex material is the aforementioned previously unreleased bonus track, Segall’s cover of “20th Century Boy” (a non-album T. Rex single from 1973). Related Ty Segall catalog titles? We got ’em. Contact your salesperson for the unabridged list.

COURTNEY BARNETT - 'BOXING DAY BLUES REVISITED'

Formats
  • TMR321 - 7"
Details

The time is nigh for yet another exceptional installment of our Jack White produced Blue Series of singles. This time around we’re privileged to work with Melbourne, Australia’s very own Courtney Barnett. Barnett has quickly made her mark on garage pop fans worldwide with her witty, self-deprecating, and authentic observations turned into raw, stream-of-consciousness lyrics and blunt melodies. The wry and dry songstress stopped by Third Man Studios in Nashville over a long weekend this summer to record a couple tracks and damn did she deliver! The A-side “Boxing Day Blues Revisited” is the slinky and bittersweet epilogue to “Boxing Day Blues”, the somber album closer from Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. It’s a strangely catching, plaintive reflection on the loneliness that blossoms when a person you care about treats you like literal garbage. The track is jaunty yet aloof, with CB’s trademark conversational lyricism in perfect contrast to the B-side, a beautifully dark reboot of the Roland S. Howard penned “Shivers” back in the days of The Boys Next Door. Her unfastened delivery of an ironic tale of teenage love and mortality brings a new level of feeling that makes it a welcome addition to Sounds of Late Fall mix you’ve been working on. Keep your eye out and ears peeled for this one ‘cause you ain’t gonna wanna miss it.

EN - 'CITY OF BRIDES'

Details

City of Brides is the third full-length album by En, the Bay Area-based duo of multi-instrumentalists Maxwell August Croy and James Devane. It was recorded over the last few years in a variety of contexts and follows upon 2012’s well-received Already Gone, further developing the diverse palette of that record. Across four sides, the pair presents exotic, transportive and richly detailed pieces that toe the line between ecstatic, long-form ambience and elegant, structured electronic composition. As always, Croy’s koto is a focal point, its distinctive tone ringing out amidst the hazy guitar, vocal and synthesis environments that surround it. The material ranges from moody to celestial, from cool to white hot. Pieces such as “Blonde Is Back” and “Mendocino Nature Rave” merge sizzling modular synth lacework with plaintive, familiar drone clouds to rapturous ends, while the two-part “Songs for Diminished Lovemaking” sequence charts a more minimal and nostalgic course. Students of Decay is pleased to present En’s most realized and defining statement to date, a welcome addition to the ever-expanding and fertile topography of American West Coast drone music.

YAK - 'NO EP'

Formats
  • TMR336 - 7"
Details

Down the road, South of Witch Mountain and across the pond, there’s an uproar in the distance, a sonic demolition of sorts, and it is—what else?—GLORIOUS rock ’n’ roll. We’re thrilled to introduce the thunderous, bruise-blue, screeching dissonance of YAK to the Church of Third Man, who have already whipped up totally frenetic and drastic yelp all across the UK. This November we will be releasing their latest EP (produced by Pulp’s Steve Mackey) stateside, featuring the sloppy, sludgy, searing single “No” with MASSIVE guitars, cantankerous drums, and a defiant, vox maelstrom. It’s gonna gnarl through your speakers and bludgeon you with pure nihilism fuzz. Following “No” on the A-side is “Alas Salvation” a song so chewed up and spit out it could pass for The Upholsterers covering DNA. The B-side ditches the bulk of the grit and instead keeps things icy, mellow, and lonely with “Out on a Limb.” It’s a stately and necessary respite till you flip the wax and strap back in for the A-side. PLUS noted artist and photographer Nick Waplington has copiously tackled the cover art. It’s beautiful and violent use of color are a welcome and complimentary addition to this package. So sit tight and take hold. Yak is poised to make noise and it’s in your best interest to get on board early and maybe JUST MAYBE you could be the coolest kid at school. 3 Song EP w/ locked groove Produced by Steve Mackey from Pulp

Lubomyr Melnyk returns with his new album ‘Rivers and Streams’, the embodiment of his signature style Ukrainian pianist Lubomyr Melnyk has often felt that his unique Continuous Music playing is akin to water – flowing and ever connected. As he further developed his technique, and the more the notes flowed, the closer to water he felt. “I found my hands and arms and everything inside them changing from normal muscle and flesh to well... water.” With his latest album, ‘Rivers and Streams’, Lubomyr focuses deeply on this connection to water, to the point where the music itself begins to embody its liquid form. Produced by Robert Raths and Jamie Perera, the album flows seamlessly from the live recordings of ‘The Pool of Memories’, captured in a church, to pieces entirely born in the studio, such as ‘Sunshimmers’ and ‘Ripples in a Water Scene’, which feature Perera on acoustic and electric guitar. Amorphous, ever-changing, Lubomyr as performer becomes subsumed into the natural ebb and flow of the keys as the album drifts between nascent upstream trickles and deeply reflective passages through winding river valleys. The album reaches its climax in ‘The Amazon’, a 20-minute piece dedicated to the world’s largest river. Raths invited Korean flautist Hyelim Kim to guest on the first part, before Lubomyr closes the album with cascades of arpeggio figures, stretching across the breadth of the keyboard with rapid virtuosity. Following on from 2013’s ‘Corollaries’ album and last year’s ‘Evertina’ EP, Lubomyr’s latest offering compounds upon his existing fluid signature style, and breathes an organic vitality, both nuanced and thoughtful. "In the body of the Continuous Piano Master, the fingers and the hands turn into Water, Air and Stone. These are the three manifestations of the Continuous Technique. And for the Continuous Pianist, the fingers physically transform the music into one of these three elements. The greatest of all miracles in the universe is Water. It is also, I believe, the rarest of all physical things in the universe. Water is the most magical and the most mysterious of all things we know! And so I dedicate this album to the Rivers and Streams of this world – in gratitude for their Beauty!“ – Lubomyr Melnyk The cover artwork shows the surface of vines captured with macro photography by French artist Marion Benoit, which Lubomyr discovered in early 2015 as the perfect visual counterpart. ‘Rivers and Streams’ will be released by Erased Tapes in LP/CD/DL format on November 27th, 2015. MAGIC TRICK - 'HALF MAN HALF MACHINE'

Formats
  • SPIRITUAL014 - LP
    096962271558
Details

• Latest release by Fresh & Onlys leader Tim Cohen under his Magic Trick moniker • Limited to 500 copies “Sound structure or randomness will fill the mind with a certain primal need for an evolution that inherently limits the imagination. Half Man Half Machine, the latest Magic Trick release, builds and then explores a sonic landscape that is constantly in bloom. Whether it be in the slipstream and eddying of triumphant washes of melody, in the serpentining elegance of percussive brambles, or in the perseverance of the laconic lilt, woven upon revelations of transcendence and frailty from the mouth of Tim Cohen, one is invited into a landscape that shifts and grows based on its own ulterior nature...and one must only listen to find it for themselves. Listen to the kalimba, metronome, cymbal washes, shaker rattles, mercurial guitars, raga feel, glockenspiel, low-frequency rumble, subtle synthesizer, tabla loops; listen to the glowing of pride, the soft self-consciousness, the deflecting surrealism of your guide’s tongue; let yourself feel swept in its sonic orgy of change and realization; there is form for you to hold, there is path for you to plant, you must allow these sounds, these stories, to envelop your senses, you must let them wash through you, guide you to the structure that looms elusive under the roar—it is trying to tell you something and you have no choice but to feel and listen to the tapestry enveloping you, inviting you into its myriad and continually growing current and unknown direction. One must listen closely to this record, there is a chemistry of sound and creativity, perched at its cups every edge, that brings an organic and expansive stroke of structure, cohesiveness, imagination and honest human transformation to a time most pummeled by the strictness of the machine. Let its sonic humanity inspire…” —Tyson Vogel (Two Gallants / Devotionals)
