RIO EN MEDIO - 'RIO EN MEDIO RADIO'

Details

It has been said that no person can step into the same river twice. Rio en Medio’s Danielle Stech-Homsy delivers a similar experience with her new album of inspired folk music, some covers, some originals. Shifting waters graze the shore, mesmerizing ripples evoke a myriad of images and sentiments, depending on what time of day it is or season of the year. Language itself turns fluid, as Stech-Homsy sings in English, French, Welsh and so on. Stech-Homsy’s approach is organic, with spartan baritone ukulele, guitar, cosmic keyboards and harmonizing vocals forming the backbone of the songs. Here and there a friend drops in to play along—in this case, Terry Cox, original member of the 1960s folk-baroque band Pentangle (and contributing drummer for David Bowie, The Bee Gees) lends his nuanced approach on drums, while Dave Roe (Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Three) chimes in merrily on bass to fill the speakers at just the right moments. Nathan Shineywater (Library of Sands, BrightBlack Morning Light) contributes lead guitar and percussion in highlighted places. Harmonica is played by George Flynn, a 90+ year-old veteran and former chauffeur for Hank Williams. With Rio en Medio Radio, Stech-Homsy explores connection between nature, literature, traditional folk music and pure flights of fancy. Delicate vocal lines and harmonies form an unusually strong thread, carrying the music along its watery way. The album convincingly weaves a path through time, picking up voices from the near and distant past and igniting meaning with subtle instrumentation. For the song “Terrapin Karma,” 12th Century troubadour poetry opens a traveller’s diary. Its meandering lyric is met by earthbound lines from Thoreau’s “Walden” and it somehow all makes sense. In the song “The Fox & The Little Prince” Stech-Homsy explores song creation inspired by a meeting of creatures in the book The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.”Darlin’ Corey” sprites Flynn’s harmonica Americana while an old Martin guitar and Stech-Homsy’s dynamic storytelling takes the radio a pilgrim’s way to old American song, while “Y Deryn Du,” a Welsh folk ode

The husband-and-wife songwriting talents of Jeffrey Clarke (Demon’s Claws, Hellshovel) and Emily Frances give one the feeling that Milk Lines have been commissioned by time itself to build a dream-like bridge, so that reality might have the chance at a glimpse… Their wide range of influences and unique brand of music are organic, primitive yet thoughtful. The lo-fi, trippy and sometimes country-laced tunes display a fresh and original sound. After having played a few select events in the Montreal- Toronto area, Milk Lines were noticed by Toronto’s Fucked Up and asked to record their first and only release to date, the Crystal Crown single. The band has since been tapped by The King Khan & BBQ Show to support them on two of their US tours. In The Red is now proud to announce the release of the band’s debut full-length, Ceramic

MAGIC TRICK - 'HALF MAN HALF MACHINE'

Formats
  • SPIRITUAL014 - LP
    096962271558
Details

“Sound structure or randomness will fill the mind with a certain primal need for an evolution that inherently limits the imagination. Half Man Half Machine, the latest Magic Trick release, builds and then explores a sonic landscape that is constantly in bloom. “Whether it be in the slipstream and eddying of triumphant washes of melody, in the serpentining elegance of percussive brambles, or in the perseverance of the laconic lilt, woven upon revelations of transcendence and frailty from the mouth of Tim Cohen, one is invited into a landscape that shifts and grows based on its own ulterior nature...and one must only listen to find it for themselves. Listen to the kalimba, metronome, cymbal washes, shaker rattles, mercurial guitars, raga feel, glockenspiel, low-frequency rumble, subtle synthesizer, tabla loops; listen to the glowing of pride, the soft self-consciousness, the deflecting surrealism of your guide’s tongue; let yourself feel swept in its sonic orgy of change and realization; there is form for you to hold, there is path for you to plant, you must allow these sounds, these stories, to envelop your senses, you must let them wash through you, guide you to the structure that looms elusive under the roar—it is trying to tell you something and you have no choice but to feel and listen to the tapestry enveloping you, inviting you into its myriad and continually growing current and unknown direction. “One must listen closely to this record, there is a chemistry of sound and creativity, perched at its cups every edge, that brings an organic and expansive stroke of structure, cohesiveness, imagination and honest human transformation to a time most pummeled by the strictness of the machine. “Let its sonic humanity inspire…” —Tyson Vogel (Two Gallants / Devotionals)

MAMMATUS - 'SPARKLING WATERS'

  • SPIRITUAL016CD - CD

Heavy space rock outsiders Mammatus return with their fourth album, and most ambitious to date. Sparkling Waters is a double LP featuring four multi-movement pieces, each designed to recalibrate the shanga array in your mind. In order to achieve the highest levels of sensory clarity, the group enlisted Phil Manley (Trans Am, Life Coach) as their guiding light throughout the studio production. As a result, these tracks shimmer with a far out, casual glow, like an aural reflection of a Risan steam pool. On Sparkling Waters, Mammatus expands upon the astral grooves and heady riffs of their previous compositions and set a course for the furthest horizon. Celestial arpeggiations of electric guitar ricochet infinitely across vast expanses of cosmic debris. Heavy riffs thunder with a rhythmic groove, like the exploding coast of Ornia spoken of in days past. Pastoral passages of mellow, slow-burning psychedelia give way to Native American flute melodies and the chanting of spiritual incantations filtered through canyons of delay. Heavenly dual guitar leads soar like a hawk gliding over a mountainside redwood canopy. Radiant synthesizers harmonize to create a shapeshifting formation of ambient space that envelops the rock and in some places completely takes over. Sparkling Waters is bound to appeal to a wide range of discerning listeners, as it incorporates elements of heavy riff rock, prog and breath metal while it also features the enhancing textures of kosmische sound coloration, soaring synth leads and astral voyages through deep space. This amalgamation of tones is presented in a way that is wholly original, casting Mammatus as the solitary practitioners of a unique sound that was invented with the express purpose of making you feel... shanga. So breathe deeply, strap on those headphones, drop the needle and get far out.

VAMPIRE BELT - 'UNFIT STRUCTURES'

Formats
  • HH03e - LP
Details

Formed in 2002 in Western Massachusetts, Vampire Belt is Bill Nace (Body / Head, x.o.4, Ceylon Mange) on guitar and electronics and Chris Corsano (Rangda, Joe McPhee, Evan Parker) on drums and electronics. Early on, they selfreleased a couple of ultra-limited CDRs of lo-fi blow-outs, something like a mangled car wreck at the intersection of hardcore and free jazz. Tours followed and then, in the early / mid ’00s, Nace and Corsano partially phased out of Vampire Belt duomode in favor of collaborations with people like Jessica Rylan, Paul Flaherty, Steve Baczkowski, Okkyung Lee, Greg Kelley, Mats Gustafsson, Thurston Moore, Dredd Foole and Bill Orcutt. But in 2014 they made good on a nine year-old promise to Ben “Six Organs of Admittance” Chasny to record a Vampire Belt album for his label. Unfit Structures, Vampire Belt’s first LP, comes via Chasny’s Hermit Hut label and it’s not such a far cry from their obliterating early CDRs: high-energy improvised outbursts with spontaneously structured forms imploding just as soon as they begin to solidify.
