one of the albums of 2007, this one is sjailing out the door (apologies)more structured rock approach to its performances, utilizing a traditional lineup of drums (omar ahsanuddin), bass (dusty jermier), organ (nash whalen), guitar (erik 'ripley' johnson), and vocals. a sound that evokes 77 era suicide, 87 era loop, spacemen 3- playing with fire, guru guru, and the velvet underground. very highly recommended.

ILITCH - '10 SUICIDES'

Formats
  • SV075 - LP
    857176003751
Details

In 1980, Ilitch mastermind Thierry Müller released his second LP, 10 Suicides, on the French imprint S.C.O.P.A. Unlike his debut Periodikmindtrouble (also available from Superior Viaduct), which featured intricately layered instrumentals, 10 Suicides explores a more art-damaged pop sensibility. While distorted guitars and atmospheric synth workouts remain a part of Müller’s signature sound, several songs credit the mysterious Ruth Ellyeri, who was not an actual person, but rather Müller’s female alter-ego. Opening track “Elle Voulait Que Je Sois Drôle” shows Ilitch’s new direction with overloaded vocoders, driving Moog basslines and soft, Eno-like melodic flourishes. The androgynous vocals on “Waiting For Mabelle (Je Ne Viendrais Pas)” resemble an upbeat Gregorian chant bent through a 20th Century lens. 10 Suicides is a staggeringly personal album that still sounds years ahead of its time. This first-time vinyl reissue comes with 16-page booklet and is recommended for fans of Ghédalia Tazartès, Chris & Cosey and Monoton.

ILITCH - 'PERIODIKMINDTROUBLE'

Formats
  • SV074 - LP
    857176003744
Details

In the mid-1970s, Parisian composer and multi-instrumentalist Thierry Müller began operating primarily under the Ilitch moniker. Juxtaposing dark, electronic soundscapes and solo guitar improvisations, Ilitch created some of the most enduring music of the era. It comes as no surprise that Nurse With Wound included Müller on their famed list of influential avant-garde artists. Originally released on Oxygene Records in 1978, Ilitch’s debut Periodikmindtrouble was a shot across the bow for the French underground scene. Comprised of instrumental four-track recordings made in Müller’s dorm room, the album features gritty tape loops, analog synth swells and angst-ridden guitars. “Sequence 4” fills the stereo field with eerie harmonium and kosmische textures, while the side-long title track is a bona fide organ soliloquy, exploring both abrasive and ambient sonorities. “Derriere La Fenetre (Behind the Window)” dives deeper into acoustic patterns to reveal the expressive quality of Müller’s singular style. Periodikmindtrouble lays the groundwork for an impressive body of work that has grown only more unsettling over the past three decades. This first-time vinyl reissue comes packaged in a gatefold jacket and is recommended for fans of Cluster, Fripp / Eno and Heldon.

2. River Scene Theme Variation

THE SHE'S / THE DRY SPELLS - 'CHERRY RED / HELIOTROPE'

Formats
  • EMP028 - 7"
    655035003870
Details

Introducing a new split 45 via Empty Cellar Records featuring harmony- heavy San Francisco legacies The She’s and The Dry Spells. Tight vocal harmonies, ambitious musical arrangements, and diverse influences meet on both sides of this record in a pairing that doesn’t disappoint. A song for the party and one for the comedown. The She’s light things up with their ever-expanding range: the group that got its start in middle school brings their steadily amassed stylistic and dynamic breadth to “Cherry Red,” produced by Patrick Brown at Different Fur. It bursts open with with a driving surf beat cut with laser-guided vocal counterpoint. Aggressive Go-Go’s, The Breeders at the beach, Shonen Knife in the Golden State—call it what you want, it’s irresistible. After winding through a dizzying set of changes, the She’s drop the beat into a half-time dream that would make the Shangri-La’s smile, but also calls to mind English guitar bands of the ’90s, a reference reinforced by singer Hannah Valente musing about painting her lips the classic color that gives this track its name. Then it’s back to the beat! Next, enter the restorative trance of “Heliotrope” by The Dry Spells (members of Sonny & The Sunsets, Jonas Reinhardt, Citay), produced by Tim Cohen (The Fresh and Onlys / Magic Trick) and mixed by Mikey Young (Total Control / Eddy Current Suppression Ring). The track opens with delicate guitar lines reminiscent of Jefferson Airplane’s best slow-psych (think “Today”) spilling from a wash of cymbals. Aquarian? Yes. Wishy-washy? No way, dude: A Fleetwood- McVie rhythm tightens this track, clean, warm and hypnotic under vocal harmonies that rise and rise and rise some more. Enter the guitar solo—nuanced, spacious and moody, it slides across a Fairport violin. This song is not, however, without its grittier influences. The bass line is biting as it is melodic. Sinewy and driving like a fretless Television, it coalesces with guitar and vocals into one final pitch-perfect exaltation before collapsing into the fragile sustain of a tremolo’d guitar.

LIMITED EDITION 7" 2 TRACKS TAKEN FROM DISHOOM SLIP DISC COMPILATION** From rocking Bombay to swinging London: what a terrific trip! In the 60s, young Indians and young Brits struck up an unlikely relationship that resulted in some truly amazing music. For this generation, culture was currency. Hip young Indians rocked up in London. ‘Beat’ bands in Bombay belted out versions of the latest rock’n’roll hits. Indian musicians dreamt of making it big in the West, while British bands were eager to explore mystic, exotic India. Despite their very different upbringings, they revelled in their opposing cultures. Slip Disc is the sound of this cross-continental youth revolution and a long-distance love affair.

MARGO PRICE - 'HURTIN (ON THE BOTTLE) B/W DESPERATE AND DEPRESSED'

Formats
  • TMR347 - 7"
Details

First impressions matter. Time and attention-strapped listeners size up an artist within a song or two, then move on or delve in further. Fortunately, it only takes Margo Price about twenty-eight seconds to convince you that you’re hearing the arrival of a singular new talent. Margo Price’s debut Third Man Records single “Hurtin’ (On the Bottle)” gives a fresh twist on classic Nashville honky tonk tunes and classic tales of drink and misfortune. Her voice has that alluring mix of vulnerability and resilience that was once the province of Loretta and Dolly. It is a tour-de-force performance that is vivid, deeply moving and all true. The exclusive non album B-side “Desperate and Depressed” was recorded live in Third Man Records’ infamous Blue Room, and features classic country staples such as slide guitar and whiskey driven sadness. With a full-length release, Midwest Farmer’s Daughter, in the works for 2016 from Third Man Records, this is just the start of good things to come from Margo Price. • “Hurtin’ (On the Bottle)” recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis. • Full-length Debut Solo LP Midwest Farmer’s Daughter arriving March 2016
