GOD Double Vinyl Reissue LP features the seminal Melbourne band's 1987 mini-album Rock Is Hell and For Lovers Only (1989) together for the first time on full waxy goodness! "GOD was a giant exploding quagmire of a calamity of a band, but they had their bad days as well. At their best, which was neither live nor in the studio ? maybe it was during band meetings ? GOD sounded like a ten train smash-up in Tin Railroad Town, which was hilarious, because they were trying to encapsulate stadium rock at least half of the time and the "monster riffs" ? and they had those, and some sneakily grabby songs as well ? often sounded like a kids' playgroup had broken into the bottle recycling bin combined with that siren song of crap amps buzzing and wheezing you sometimes hear just before they blow up. You just looked at those guys, and even listened to them, and you just knew right away they were the coolest thing going ? a buncha hairy brat kids doing KISS meets punk, heads down and blasting away like a mining company that's just been given the green light on a few hectares of unexploited desert. Tim Hemensley, Joel Silbersher, Sean Greenway, Matty Whittle ? in the annals of rock history, these are names that will never mean anything to anybody, no matter how good they were in GOD or how much great stuff they recorded separately after they broke up. The annals of rock history are fucking stupid, that's why. Thanks to my telcom company sending me a magazine subscription I never wanted instead of cutting their prices down to something a human being might be able to afford, I just got a copy of Rolling Stone today. It eulogises all those great artists whose albums you supposedly rilly need to hear this year, dude. From the front cover photo of 2007's leading fat rock chick Jack White, through to the rock'n'revolutionary mobile phone ad on the back, there's not one single human gazebo in there who, in the broader artistic scheme of things, deserves to scratch the crust off GOD's underpants. There's only one album rock lovers need this year. That's GOD. Same as last year, only now it's on vinyl. Like Radar from "M.A.S.H." once said, "Put a new fang in your tone-arm cobra", and blast it today." -Leaping Larry L. 300 COPIES WORLD WIDE OF THIS ON DELUXE 2LP / GATEFOLD SLEEVE. This reissue of Everybody Knows We Got Nowhere will be available as a lavish 5 LP boxset, a double CD package, a double LP as well as the obligatory MP3 download. Broken hands, lost Rickenbackers, and sliced tendons aside, The Heads – Simon Price (guitar, vocals), Hugo Morgan (bass), Wayne Maskell (drums) and Paul Allen (guitar) - hit many highs during this time. ***BACK IN STOCK***"Fuck nostalgia. Live the truth. Truth is feeling, truth is sound, truth is motion. I am believing. I am seeing. I am moving. Truth is forever. Meet the Tim Presley / White Fence Truth Serum. Imagine, if you will, that your Uncle Frank, Aunt Jane and Cousin Ricky all made out with George Harrison at the same time and felt good about it. That's what the Family Perfume smells like. Like the real shit. This ain't your regular mutton-chop rock. This is freak your fucking mom out 'cause she caught you naked in the backyard blasting this shit rock. This is not a joke. This is the hit factory. This is the eye. This is another planet. And hurry up, cause this perfume ain't available at no Macy's. Fuck the Rolling Stones. Long live Keith. We're already dead. Smell the truth. Fuck the truth. Fuck rock and roll. Love rock and roll." -Ty Segall "Wake up. Write. Write. Record. Tweak. Write. Record. Swallow. Tweak out. Tweak. Bounce. Write. Wake up. Record. Sex? No. Sleep. Wake up. Record. "I hardly have anything but this anymore.... I had 80 songs, then chopped it to 60 and now to 30. It's a collection, and an album. I have some important things to say to myself. I'm a rock 'n' roll soldier forever. I melt music. When people talk to me, I'm thinking about some song to do. I think I've been cursed. I have no say in the matter. A rainbow Vex. It's OK though; it's for the greater good. "A song can make someone feel so good, or make someone want to write a better one. And sometimes, it could make you rob a liquor store. These are the songs of a man in a bag, and his blue pen." -Tim Presley

Andrew Weatherall never wakes up in the morning and decides to start a new album that day. Instead, recording music is a continuous process usually working with different collaborators and seeing where the muse takes him. Somewhere down the line the rewards of a collaboration will coalesce into a body of work between thirty minutes and an hour long and he will put a call into the Rotters’ team to say he has a new release ready to go. We were visiting the studio catching up on new tracks in various states of readiness when he offered up some remixes of tracks from his recent “Ruled by Passion…” he’d been sent by fellow musicians. Tim Fairplay, Andrew’s partner in The Asphodells, Sean Johnston from A Love From Outer Space and Scott Fraser live and work in the area and all popped in at various points. Andrew’s black book reads like the who’s who of contemporary music but rather than plunder it for remixers he’d let drop the idea of a remix with friends and neighbours. These plus a couple a swaps with musical friends who were new to the concept of remixing, gave Andrew an hour of music he thoroughly enjoyed listening to. It goes without saying none of the tracks are duds but our ears always prick up when Justin Robertson’s take on “Beglammered” ups the heart rate or Daniel Avery’s own unscrewing of “… the Axis” ruffles the neck hairs. We’ve stopped arguing in the office about which is the best track. They all are.

BRIGITTE FONTAINE - 'BRIGITTE FONTAINE EST...FOLLE'
Formats
SV041LP - LP

Details
***BACK IN STOCK***French poet and chameleonic vocalist Brigitte Fontaine’s career spans over four decades. Only a few years before her 1968 debut, Brigitte Fontaine Est…Folle, she moved to Paris to become an actress and took her prodigiously mature voice into the studio. Rich in the drama she brought to theater, Fontaine synthesized chanson (French pop song) and world music, which eventually won her international acclaim as a performer and collaborator with a variety of artists from around the world (Art Ensemble of Chicago, Sonic Youth and Stereolab, to name just a few). On Est…Folle, Fontaine takes flight over conductor Jean Claude Vannier’s brilliant arrangements. Vannier, best known for his work on Serge Gainsbourg’s Histoire De Melody Nelson, is in fine form, using what would become his trademark stylings: lush strings, taut rhythms culled from across the globe and a healthy dose of whimsy. “Il Pleut” swings from understatement to rapturous delight. “Une Fois Mais Pas Deux” is an infectious pop song that could have been culled from a French New Wave soundtrack. Fontaine is adventurous and multi-dimensional with sophisticated lyrics, poignant melodies and enthralling delivery. Such artful handling of meter and rhyme (or lack thereof) is rare in pop song. Far from the era’s yé-yé phenomenon, but never fully removed from its traditions, Est...Folle is an essential link in French pop music, exuberantly pushing the genre into more conceptual and experimental sounds.

ALICE COLTRANE - 'UNIVERSAL CONCIOUSNESS'
Formats
SV070 - LP
857176003706
Details
Originally released on Impulse! in 1971, Universal Consciousness is a major turning point in Alice Coltrane’s momentous career. While her previous albums pushed the limits of spiritual free-jazz and featured much of her late husband’s band, Universal Consciousness expands the harpist / pianist’s compositional palette with organ and strings (working with Ornette Coleman). “Oh Allah” is the finest example of Coltrane’s new direction: tense violins dissolve into sublime organ solos and exquisite brushwork from long-time Mile Davis collaborator Jack DeJohnette. While the title track undulates with a fierce clamor, “Hare Krishna” showcases Coltrane’s uncanny ability for transcendent and slow-paced arrangements. In The Wire’s “100 Records That Set the World on Fire,” David Toop writes, “[Universal Consciousness] clearly connects to other dyspeptic jazz traditions—the organ trio, the soloists with strings— yet volleys them into outer space, ancient Egypt, the Ganges, the great beyond. The production is astounding, the quality of improvisation is riveting, the string arrangements are apocalyptic rather than saccharine, the balance of turbulence and calm a genuine dialectic that later mystic / exotic post-jazz copped out of pursuing. Her lack of constraint was dimly regarded by adherents of ’70s jazz and its masculine orthodoxies, yet Alice deserved better credit for virtuosity, originality, and the sheer will power needed to realized her vision.” This first-time vinyl reissue has been carefully remastered from the original master tapes.
