POSSESSOR - 'STAY DEAD'

"Something sinister is looming in the mist…" Following the success of last year's debut album, "Electric Hell", London’s occult metal monsters POSSESSOR are back with a highly-anticipated follow up in the shape of their new EP, “Stay Dead”. Maintaining the trio's love for all things vintage and terrifying, the four tracks on display here crackle and explode like it’s the band's last day on earth. Malevolent high speed thrash riffs tumble and crash into a swamp of sludgy old school British doom, bringing to mind the savage lo-fi lunacy of Bathory and Venom with the hooks and claws of vintage Electric Wizard and 90s filth such as L7 and early Nirvana - all as if beamed to us straight from the set of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Cloaked in a black and white sleeve that brings to mind both Black Sabbath and the hammiest of Hammer Horror flicks, “Stay Dead” will secure Possessor's place in the mysterious annals of British heavy metal, and is a delicious taster for the band's next full length which currently lies festering in the crypt…ready to be resurrected. “Stay Dead” will be released on 12” clear vinyl in an edition of 500. this is the second release on the Creepy Crawl label… “Something was creeping and creeping and waiting to be seen and felt and heard.” H.P. Lovecraft

THE LAVENDER FLU - 'HEAVY AIR'

Formats
  • MEDSIX - 2xLPs
Details

Heavy Air is a 30 song puzzle / map masterminded by Chris Gunn (The Hunches, Hospitals). Recorded on analog tape machines over a period of years and outside of the genre concentration camps. A home recording project approached completely open to experimentation but in love with songs. Like Terrence Malick's Tree Of Life remade by the ghost of Phillip K. Dick; projecting sounds as images inside your head. It's extremely psychedelic and dense with layers and layers yielding new secrets with each listen. Songs / melodies / lyrics appear and reappear as half remembered dreams or reconstructed memories. It's a circuitous path through pop songs ("My Time", "Those That Bend" - with a Waterloo Sunset vibe), blasted rockers ("Fingers Like Wounds"), beautiful instrumentals ("Feel The Ground", "Telepathic Axe"), fractured folk ("Between The Trees"), weirder experimental songs ("Vacuum Creature", "La-Bas"), straight up fried epics ("Transcendental Hangover") plus a few covers in the mix including a maximal / minimal take on The Godz mantra-like ode to sun worship and a Townes Van Zandt tune that is derailed by a massive panic attack. Traces of Big Star, Royal Trux, Brian Eno, Meat Puppets II, American Beauty are in the DNA but The Lavender Flu is its own beast. While it is obviously insane to release a double album debut in the current no-attention-span era, it is the only way. Put in the time, you will be rewarded. This is one of those rare double albums that isn't overripe or padded with mediocrity. All killer, no filler! Super dynamic pressing! Completely insane on headphones! Recorded by Chris at home with lots of help from Justin Higgins (of Old Standard Sound), Lucas Gunn (The Blimp), Scott Simmons (Exiled Records, Helen), Ben Spencer (The Hunches), Adam Stonehouse (The Hospitals), Hart Gledhill (The Hunches), Spencer Clark and others. Mastered by Timothy Stollenwerk. Lacquers cut at Ardent (Big Star) by Jeff Powell on the old Stax Lathe. Vinyl cut at Quality Records.

VARIOUS - 'WHY THE MOUNTAINS ARE BLACK: PRIMEVAL GREEK VILLAGE MUSIC: 1907-1960'

Third Man Records is proud to present a truly rare musical oddity—a two disc collection of primal and unhinged Greek village music that at times sounds more like free jazz or doom folk, feral and trance-like as it is. After years of research, fieldwork and collecting, Christopher King—Grammy-winning producer, sound-engineer, curator and writer—has gathered together from his private 78 rpm archive the most mind expanding and libido inducing song and dance music from the rural hinterlands of mainland Greece and its islands. Recorded between 1907 and 1960, this collection contains the first and the last—the alpha and the omega—of Greek demotika—or folk music. And it is not what you would expect. Remastered from the original 78 rpm discs, this set contains 28 previously unissued recordings made in the cramped, primitive studios of Athens, Greece, New York, NY, and Chicago, IL. Crazed Macedonian bagpipes, keening violins, shiver-inducing zournas and shepherd-pipes are found throughout the two discs. Cover artwork is by legendary underground artist R. Crumb and designed by Grammy winning Susan Archie. A beautifully thought-provoking if not radical essay on this music by King accompanies the lavish package. Not simply for historians or collectors of long gone sounds, this compilation is intended to push the limits of what we have come to expect of music, its purpose and indeed its origin. You will experience a profound musical transformation immediately upon listening. •Produced by Christopher King who has been profiled recently in the New York Times Magazine, Oxford American Magazine, and on NPR.

CORNELIUS ASPERGER & THE BI-CURIOUS UNICORNS - 'S/T'

Formats
  • BR47/REP124 - CD
    038161004728
Details

The highly dubious idea known as Cornelius Asperger and the Bi-Curious Unicorns was concocted when vocalist Sammytown (from distorto-punk virtuosos Fang) got back together after a 30-year hiatus with original Fang guitarist Tom Flynn (formerly of Star Pimp, Duh and the Melvins) for a cruise into the musical unknown. Also buying a ticket for this weird and wonderful three-hour-tour were bassist Dave Chavez (Verbal Abuse, Sick Pleasure, Code of Honor) and local clown-around-town drummist Stark Raving Brad (Hellbillys, Marginal Prophets). Their fifteen-track self-titled debut album was recorded over two long weekends by the scholarly Tim Green at his scenic mountaintop fortress, and is brought to you through the dual marketing might of Reptilian Records and Boner Records. It includes various examples of dirtbag heavy-ness, blues-metal arty-ness and punk rock noisey-ness. It soon becomes apparent, however, that each tune appears to have been gleefully taken apart and then put back together again the wrong way. Odd rhythm shifts, garbled guitar flips and assorted grunts and groans are some of the attractions. “If Only” dredges up a three-note bass riff from the bottom of the sea while over-amped organ and guitar fight it out in the rolling waves above. “Call the Doctor” opens with plinking piano ominous-ness before the kindly Dr. Munchausen rides the riff-truck into town, unloads a shrieking guitar solo, and finally lets the drums waltz everyone off into the sunset. “Waiting Around to Die,” a cover originally performed by country-folk bad-vibe spreader Townes Van Zandt, is dumped in a swamp and topped with vocals clogged by tar, nicotine and cough syrup. For the old folks, “Neon Baby” and “Sins of Mercy” are unhinged punk rock pancakes just like grandma used to make, while “Jamey’s Love Song” showcases earnest monkeys on cowbells as they teach drooling, untuned-guitar playing cretins how to do the butt-rock boogie. The album ends with Sammytown’s true tale of his fun-loving prison associate, a gentleman by the name of “Lunchbox” (the titular box being where the authorities found the head of his victim). Tribal beats, biblical jabbering and woozy distorted discombobulations send us off down the path to paradise.

OLAFUR ARNALDS & NILS FRAHM - 'TRANCE FRENDZ'

Formats
  • ERATP081LP - LP
    4050486110539
Details

Having been available exclusively as the second disc to 2015's 'Collaborative Works', Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm's improvised audio recordings 'Trance Frendz', taken from their 45-minute studio film of the same name, have been given their own vinyl release – out March 4th, 2016. Prior to a string of collaborative Erased Tapes releases, which include 2012's 'Stare' 10” and last year’s 'Life Story Love and Glory' 7” and 'Loon' 12” – compiled on the 'Collaborative Works' 2-CD set, Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm spent many hours together in their studios across Berlin and Reykjavik. Both have carved out genre-defying musical careers and formed unique live shows, creating a fan base loyal to their prolific output. During a session at Durton Studio in Berlin last summer, Nils and Ólafur invited Alexander Schneider and his camera to document it. The recording continued long after the first take, stretching out into the next day until, eventually, several new improvisations had been recorded in 8 hours with no overdubs or edits. The unexpected nature in which these pieces had been created was reminiscent of their first on-stage improvisation many years ago. It became immediately clear how special these songs were. "At the end of the night we had all this music that sounded unfamiliar even to us, loudly asking to be included in this collection.” Originally made available as a 45-minute film on their joint website (www.arnaldsfrahm.com) last September, 'Trance Frendz' will be available to own on vinyl from March 4th, 2016. Press for their 'Collaborative Works': 'A particularly joyous wash of slinky percussion and juddering layers' (8/10) – Clash 'An enchanting listen. The bar for a Lads' Night In has just been raised a few notches' (7/10) – Drowned In Sound ‘This is music for slowing down the pace of modern life... An immersive listening experience is guaranteed, while we must hope Frahm and Arnalds go on ‘holiday’ together more in future, and don’t forget to take their musical instruments.’ ★★★★ – MusicOMH 'A collection of gorgeously intimate piano compositions and eye-opening synth pieces, each never aggressive but always powerfully poignant' (8/10) – Under The Radar 'What Collaborative Works offers is something strange: a shared world created by two mad geniuses. Long may Arnalds and Frahm tinker' (8/10) – PopMatters 'Collaborative Works further proves just how natural a fit Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm are together' – Resident Advisor

CELLAR DOORS - 'FROST / PRISM'

Formats
  • SPIRITUAL015 - 7"
Details

Hailing from San Francisco by way of Los Angeles, Cellar Doors are blowing up fast within the thriving California psych scene. Leading exponents of what is being called the third wave of psychedelic sound, they have been coaxed out of their thriving underground scene for support slots via invitation from the likes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Roky Erickson, Toy, Allah-Las, Mystic Braves and Alex Maas (Black Angels), among others. Their much anticipated debut album is one of the most hotly tipped in recent times around the Bay Area, dripping with pure power psych melody overlaid onto undulating walls of sound. Powerful, brooding and danceable at the same time, it is at once timeless and cutting edge. Lead single “Frost” sounds like “helicopter blades cutting through thick black molasses,” tearing out of the speakers as if it were a forgotten classic on the jukebox of some faraway planet, conveying the simple electricity of attraction while staring at one’s own life in a hall of warped mirrors. Released in a limited edition on white vinyl by Spiritual Pajamas Records (home to Mammatus, The Entrance Band, Magic Trick among others), the single is accompanied by a video from English director Nathan Seabrook. “Depeche Mode and Joy Division robbed the biggest bank in London, and in the safe they found Cellar Doors. I love music you can rob a bank to and this does that for me.” —Alex Maas (The Black Angels

Formats
  • PMB008 - 12"

Stockholms' Viagra Boys blend hazy, distorted techno grooves with arrogance, grime and catchiness: the result is a mesmerizing punk rock offspring with the narcotic allure of static and ecstacy. With a volcanic rythm section, heat seeking guitars, screeching mellotrone interludes and a sociopath sax player, these cats are fronted by a devil in a pretty dress.
