THEE OH SEES - 'THE MASTERS BEDROOM IS WORTH SPENDING A NIGHT IN'

Formats

Details

BLACK VINYL REPRESS!! Somewhere beyond nostalgia, beyond the garage, somewhere beyond the fireside song and supposed goo-rock, you will find the latest incarnation of Thee Oh Sees, now a quartet composed of John Dwyer (OCS, Coachwhips, Pink & Brown), Brigid Dawson, Petey Dammit!, and Mike Shoun. The prolific John Dwyer contends again for best album of his career with "The Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending A Night In". Following 2007's "Sucks Blood", the album weaves Dwyer's signature AM radio howl with the catchiest of driving tunes, Dawson's gorgeous harmonies, heightened fidelity, thick spring-reverbed bombast, mighty drums (at times in pairs), and an undeniable pull. The tracks were recorded by Chris Woodhouse in San Francisco except three which were done with Chris Moore and Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio) in New York City. From the introductory wailing feedback of "Block Of Ice" to the heavy-footed trudge of "You Will See This Dog Before You Die", you will be captivated.

CC DUST - 'S/T'

Formats
  • LSSN045 - 12"
Details

CC Dust's Self-Titled 12" EP will be available Summer 2016, released in USA by Perennial Records and in Europe by Night School. CC DUST is a new duo from Olympia, Washington featuring Maryjane Dunphe and David Jaques. Channeling an elemental life-force hewn straight from the heart, Dunphe's voice bursts into every melodic line, a cracked, soulful instrument powered by conviction, duetting, duelling and dancing with Jaques' crisp production. A light that casts shadow, CC Dust is doomed, romantic music anchored by Jaques' live bass and the powerful performance values Dunphe has honed both in her punk group VEXX and in various film and performance projects. Musically, CC Dust's precedents might be considered the European synth pop originators of the early 80s, there's also an abundance of low-end hooks played on baritone and bass guitars that teases the ear like early New Order productions, but in Dunphe's passionate vocal performances there's a close-to-the-bone reality that bypasses cool detachment. Their self-titled debut explodes with Never Going To Die, an anthem for the seizing of the day, the rush of standing on the edge looking outwards, invincible. Tonopah slithers into view, Jaques baritone guitar weaving patterns around Dunphe?s voice before the emotion swells in the chorus. Baby Boy is decidedly more ominous, a slow burner that climaxes in an incredible falsetto performance. Abra is another high point, a sweeping waltz that spins the listener around into a tumult, a bittersweet accompaniment to the opening track. Mutiny feels like the end of a phase in your life "let's be rid of our obsessions, don't you agree" begs Dunphe, sounding as obsessed and passionate as ever. It's an ode to desire, the euphoria it grants and the consequences. CC Dust play and write real songs lived. A desire for desire. What is it? How does it manifest? Is it all worth the tumult? CC Dust offer no answers as there are none, but they ask the right questions in a life-affirming way. Doomed, romantic, unanswerable and vital. 300 Copies on Vinyl only.

BAD SPORTS - 'LIVING WITH SECRETS'

Formats
  • ZZZ143 - 12"

Details

Bad Sports return with a jaw-dropping new 12-inch! While the band hasn’t released anything in a couple of years, the individual members have been anything but idle during that time. Orville Neely continues his slow takeover of the world with rock juggernauts OBN IIIs (who have released two albums in the past two years), while Daniel Fried and Gregory Rutherford’s band Video got signed to Jack White’s label Third Man Records, and has been touring ever since. The pair have also been touring a ton as one half of Radioactivity, who released the stunning Silent Kill on Dirtnap last year. Originally conceived as a series of three singles, the band and label realized that the individual seven songs worked as one piece. Living With Secrets is another step forward for Bad Sports—moving away from both the ebullient punk/power pop of 2011’s Kings Of The Weekend and the anything-goes grimy punk of 2014’s Bras, this EP is their darkest, most powerful, and weirdest. The lyrics are bleak and desperate, but the music is more dangerously catchy than ever.

2. Living With Secrets
3. Done To Death

SARAH MARY CHADWICK - 'ROSES ALWAYS DIE'

Formats
  • RINLP042 - LP
    9332727039379
Details

Following three critically acclaimed solo albums, Sarah Mary Chadwick’s Roses Always Die expands on the quiet intensity of her previous work, exploring memory, grief and personal analysis. Her unflinching approach to songwriting introduces complex, often difficult subject matter as vivid as it is understated. An old immobile organ provides the only accompaniment to her voice, giving the album an eerie consistency that perfectly underpins the diverse, open-ended narratives that run through each song. The second album recorded with Geoffrey O’Connor (Crayon Fields), it has a more organic sound than the wall of synths used on 9 Classic Tracks, with most songs comprised of just one voice and a live ’70s Yamaha analogue organ—a huge, heavy, double-tiered beast with built-in percussion beats and pedal bass —recorded on site in the loungeroom at Sarah’s house in Collingwood, Melbourne. Unembellished and at times brutally sparse, these songs are whittled down to their surprisingly hooky, heartbreaking, wry, bare-boned essentials. The sentiments are personal and the refrains are huge and ambitious, while Sarah’s voice is strong and vulnerable — it croons and croaks and cracks, conjuring grief and memory. “Sarah Mary Chadwick’s new album is a beautiful and insightful collection of songs. Her work achieves a poignancy which is distinct as it is rare.” —Henry Rollins

TR - 'MANIFESTO RUMORATORIO'

Formats
  • SB182 - LP

Details

When we last heard from Pietro La Rocca, he was honing his inscrutable craft with the unflinchingly great Sicilian ensemble, Oper’azione Nafta, whose Cavuru forged the skree of High Rise with the yelp of Sun City Girls. On Manifesto Rumoratorio, La Rocca teams up with ex-pat Polish vocalist Patrycja Stefanek with the results running the gamut from agog to agape. Utilizing a small array of gadgets (Walkman, delays, toys, and tapes) in conjunction with voice and guitar, the results simmer in an ardor of abstract improvisational babble—think Vetza / Joe Potts (LAFMS), Jim French / Diamanda Galás on Metalanguage, Joan La Barbara / Bruce Ditmas on Wizard Records, or Suckdog. Polarizing? Sure, but like the deep end of the pool, it’s great once you get in. Produced by Siltbreeze majordomo Tom Lax, in conjunction with the Oley Freindschaft Guild of Braucherei Practitioners and the Guild of Urglaawe Braucherei and Hexerei Practitioners, Manifesto Rumoratorio possesses a language understood by, if not hundreds, then literally dozens of rabid, abstract-clatter-wanters. The rest of you? Bring a coat, it might get chilly.

“There’s a reason why our relationship with The Dead C is Ba Da Bing’s longest running. It’s not because they are the hardest working band we’ve ever met. It’s not because they are the largest selling band we’ve ever released. It’s not because we’re inspired to support our local music scene. “Yes, there’s definitely a reason... please give me a minute... oh, ok, I got it (just put on this record). Like every time I hear their recordings, I’m reminded that they are one of the greatest rock bands to ever pick up a guitar and attempt to play it wrong. Listening to The Dead C causes me to think differently. It brings up emotions with which I’m otherwise unfamiliar. It strikes to the essence of my being and reveals what otherwise remains hidden. I take solace in knowing that one out of every thirty of you reading this know exactly what I’m talking about. “On the spectrum of The Dead C’s sound output, Trouble could very well be seen as springing from the same realm as the massive “Driver UFO,” one of the band’s greatest tracks ever, off Harsh 70s Reality. There’s a youthful aggression here, a churning anger, deadened by pounding drone. Much like H70s, this record serves as a gateway drug— if you were ever looking for an album to play to a newbie curious about experimental rock, this would be it. The visceral strength of their performance trembles out of the speakers. The magnificence of their stamina survives each album side. “We are in a creative highpoint for the trio at the moment. Bruce Russell has just released a captivating solo album on Feeding Tube, while Michael Morley’s solo project Gate just put out a release on MIE. Robbie Yeats has been performing of late as backup for Alastair Galbraith. The fact that there are still means to commute between Lyttelton and Port Chalmers on the South Island of New Zealand means these three can still find time to get together, and allows for what we have here today. And it’s fucking glorious. ’’ —Ben Goldberg, Ba Da Bing
