Considering they’ve collaborated ever since they were kids living under the same roof, The Baird Sisters arguably could have made an album like Until You Find Your Green years ago. They’ve released two live recordings (the first recorded by their dad) and made plenty of demos, but this marks the first time Laura and Meg Baird decided to write and record a full-length on their own terms. The songs, recorded in Laura’s house, have a familial intimacy joined by skillful depth, the ideal blend for a folk record, an equal mix of comfort and talent. Growing up surrounded by music, the sisters have traveled separate paths while remaining close. Laura studied piano and trombone in school and has collaborated with Glenn Jones on his recent releases. Meg has played in Espers, Watery Love, and currently drums/sings in Heron Oblivion. She’s also released a few solo albums on Drag City. Laura’s first solo record will be released by Ba Da Bing early next year. These recordings capture the complexity of seventies progressive folk rock, emphasizing acoustic instrumentation with a lack of self-consciousness that can only come from a private domestic environment. Meg plays guitar, Laura banjo, singing in harmony, and ornamenting their songs with flute, cello, fiddle, mandolin, upright bass, percussion and a cricket chorus. Until You Find Your Green’s songs seem traditional, but that’s deceptive, and they unfold in greater depths the deeper attention paid to them.

MV / EE - 'ROOT / VOID'

Formats
  • WOODSIST087 - LP
Details

“MV & EE take their homespun hypnotics and cosmic country sounds to new levels on Root / Void. I love this album— it trips hard and hauntingly—a gift for languid golden afternoons or late night moonlight powwows. Anthem-worthy tape edits on some cuts crack open surreal and cinematic vistas. While joined by fellow travelers here and there, this album remains in essence a fecund duet from two entwined souls, updating and re-defining their unique pool of sound. Intrepid audio bathers: get thee immersed!” —Lee Renaldo, Italy, July 2016

Thor & Friends is the eponymous full length debut from the avant-chamber ensemble formed by polymath percussionist Thor Harris. It was recorded in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and produced by Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost from A Hawk & A Hacksaw and Deerhoof’s John Dieterich. The three core members of the band are Peggy Ghorbani on marimba, Sarah “Goat” Gautier on marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, organ, voice, mellotron and piano, and Harris on sundry percussion and wind instruments including some of his own devising. They are joined Jeremy Barnes on accordion, drum, and mellotron; Heather Trost on violin, voice & marimba; John Dieterich on guitar, bass, castanets and special effects; and Raven on bone flute, and electronic sounds. The band was inaugurated after Harris toured for five years as the percussionist of iconic avant-rock ensemble Swans. As a vehicle for experimentation with American Minimalism with a rotating cast of Austin-based musicians, Harris draws on composers including Terry Riley and Steve Reich, but also such diverse influences as Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, Moondog and The Necks; the album centers around a polyrhythmic core of mallet-struck instruments— primarily marimba, xylophone and vibraphone. Circling these core motifs are shifting streams of everything from processed pedal steel and analog synthesizer to violin, viola, stand-up bass, clarinet, duduk and oboe. By rooting their art in both improvisation and the involvement of neighbors and friends in their process, Thor & Friends embody utopian optimism, making use of what and whom is around at any given moment to make music with.

LIGHT FANTASTIC - 'OUT OF VIEW'

Formats
  • SPIRITUAL019 - LP
    096962271619
Details

“You can either take a dreamy glide on the waves of the Pacific Ocean or you can let the waves engulf you... either way your senses take in something that’s not unlike the sparkling music and voices of Light Fantastic. “The sophisticated yet innocent jangle of their debut long player Out of View on the Spiritual Pajamas label is a fresh neighbor to the trippy head music for which San Francisco is usually known. But somehow it lives quite happily in the midst of giant Redwoods, the thick cold waters of the foggy coast, or the laid back urgency of a late night out in the Mission with your head in the clouds. From The Fillmore to The Whisky a Go Go, to The Hacienda in Manchester, the ten songs on this album work as a sort of View-Master / time machine... ‘feels like I’ve been here before’… and you wanna stay for a while and smile. “Terry Sowers, chief songwriter armed with his trusty Rickenbacker six-string and melancholy vocal / lyric delivery, powers the Light Fantastic. Bassman Jeremy Bringetto hooks you in with his super melodic but well-rounded bass lines while Rachel Hoiem twinkles and pads the songs with her keyboards and harmonies. Recording mastermind Rex Shelverton and his colorful guitar comes through like a lighthouse in heavy fog, lighting the way for the group and Terry’s tunes to take you on a trip. This ain’t what you call surf rock but you’ll find these guys out on every swell. And if you do surf, these are the tunes that are in your head while you’re paddling for the next wave... the next wave? Light Fantastic.” —Brent Rademaker (Beachwood Sparks, The Tyde, GospelbeacH) Southern California, Summer 2016

NEGATIVLAND - 'OVER THE EDGE VOL 9: THE CHOPPING CHANNEL'

Formats
  • SEELAND032 - CD
    753762003221
Details

Negativland’s newest album is the summation of years of on-air research and development of the Chopping Channel: A place on the dial where music—and lots more!—was swallowed, digested, exhumed, consumed, and presented for sale at prices that didn’t last long. Broadcasting live from Negativland’s legendary Over The Edge radio program, this album brings you cultural appropriation at its most typical, with jokes that aren’t that funny because they aren’t really jokes. Atop a relentlessly atomized mix of thousands of fragmentary samples of indeterminate origin, re-mulched into one continuous and time-saving stream of music, the salesmen (and woman!) of the Chopping Channel dare to sell you the music you’re already listening to, as well as the culture you’ll need to survive in the years to come. A cavalcade of special guest hosts, including Mark Gergis (Porest, Mono Pause / Neung Phak), alongside regulars Bud Choke and Help Suit, breathlessly parade the goods you need and instant-compose new modern music classics. The Over the Edge program is history’s longest-running freeform radio show, as heard on Thursdays at midnight on KPFA FM in Berkeley, California. Originally helmed by the late Don Joyce, and now by Jon “Wobbly” Leidecker, it’s the latest release in a series of Negativland albums carefully crafted from on-air recordings, and represents the last released work completed with Don Joyce before his death in 2015.

THE MOONDOGGIES - 'DON'T BE A STRANGER'

Formats
  • HAR004 - 2xLPs
    0098787300413
Details

"I can't for the life of me figure out why The Moondoggies aren't one of the largest independent bands in the country." -- Performer Magazine "It's the rich three-and-four-part harmonies that really give the Moondoggies' expansive, epic jams their distinctive, vintage sound." -- Pitchfork he Moondoggies have hit upon a nice balance of tradition and contemporary influence." -- The Big Takeover Everett is a small city in northern Washington state, perhaps best known as the birthplace of Kenny Loggins, Carol Kaye, and, as of 2006, The Moondoggies. The Moondoggies are a four-piece band that plays timeless American music. Warm three-part harmonies, gothic Rhodes organ, and wanderlust guitar mark a sound rooted in boogie blues and cosmic country; their whip-smart songwriting leads to hook-heavy tunes that bristle with originality. The Moondoggies’ inaugural full-length release, Don’t Be a Stranger, was first released in 2008 and contains shades of gospel, blues, rock, and country — each of these songs have earned their slot in the great American jukebox. As of 2016, The Moondoggies as a band will have existed for a full decade. To commemorate, Hardly Art will issue Don’t Be a Stranger on vinyl for the very first time. In addition to the original album, five previously unreleased bonus tracks have been tacked onto the release, all recorded during the same Don’t Be a Stranger sessions with producer Erik Blood in Seattle. The Moondoggies are pleased to re-present this album and its new-old songs to you, dear listener, in lieu of new material that has been brewing since 2013.
