*LP BACK IN STOCK*Miss Destiny are a band from Melbourne, Australia who play music that’s reminiscent of a mythical time when guitar music’s material of choice was transitioning from denim to leather. Post-hippie, pre-punk era rock ‘n’ roll meets the origins of New Wave of British Heavy Metal, with a glimmer of Sunset Strip feel-good excess. While this could sound like another careful curation of rawks past, and eggheads could argue about the relevancy of rock music in 2016, there’s a life and spirit in this band beyond the typical genre curations that often render rock music one dimensional. Their self titled debut album will be released by R.I.P. Society Records / Agitated in October 2016 and was recorded across a couple of hot summer days in 2015. The all-female line-up on the recording was Harriet Hudson (Circle Pit, Ratsak, Southern Comfort), Harriet Stewart (Sleepless Nights, School of Radiant Living), Annie Llewellyn (Grotto, The Angel & Baby Chain) and Emily Jans (Straightjacket Nation, Bloody Hammer). This record extends on the “muscle and bite” (Evan Minsker, Pitchfork) of their debut 7” on Hozac Records, with a startling leap in the departments of power, precision and overall toughness. No doubt this has to do with powerhouse Emily joining behind the kit, who recorded both this and the forthcoming Straightjacket Nation record while very pregnant! Find another example of this in punk/hardcore/rock ‘n’ roll history, I dare ya. The track “Killers” focuses on the horrendous effects of domestic violence, it’s Miss Destiny’s reaction to the number of women murdered or harmed by domestic violence in Australia in 2015 - a big ”go fuck yourself” to the perpetrators, and a song for those affected and those who stand up against the perpetrators to draw strength from, and party to. It might be said that any time a woman rebels against archaic societal gender roles by playing music and having a voice, it’s a political act. And while this record label and Miss Destiny would agree with this, the band are weary of being positioned as such - they’re just just a rock band having a good time. They possess a self-deprecating sense of humour and deep appreciation of the excesses of rock ‘n’ roll - shared beers, shared jokes, shared experiences. Miss Destiny are having a laugh while sticking it to the man. The ladies in the band say their main influences are KISS and Danzig, but I can hear a bunch of gals from a punk/D-I-Y/basement rock perspective getting hip to Di’anno era Iron Maiden and Girlschool. But mostly it just sounds like them being their true selves, fierce and fun. Like the Runaways if they recorded for Neat records.. .Denim and Leather and Studs and Bullet Belts!!!!

LAST OF THE EASY RIDERS - 'S/T'

Formats
  • AGIT041 - MLP
    5060446121030
Details

While Last of the Easy Riders formed last summer in Denver, the band of sonic nomads each converged high in the Rocky Mountains individually from various parts of the country. Even with dissimilar backgrounds, each of the musicians shared one common vision: to create cosmic rock ‘n’ roll. The outcome is the band’s naturally formulated blend of raw Midwestern treble and passionate deep-south rhythm and bass. That acoustic integrity shines bright on the group’s gutsy self-titled debut EP on Agitated Records. Much like their iconic heroes in bygone country-rock outfits like The Byrds and The Band, each member contributes song credits to the new disc. The band comprises guitarist/vocalist, Christopher Minarik, Mitch Mitchum (drums, vocals), Daniel Duggan (bass, vocals) and guitarist, Bradley T Grear. “It’s what makes us dynamic – four individual songwriters playing in one band,” said Minarik, who refers to Last of the Easy Riders as “southwestern psych-rock.” The earthy, inspired track list projects the tranquility of the outdoors, or perhaps hazily driving through Joshua Tree National Park with the windows down, while a CCR cassette warmly hums in the background. It’s an honest, but optimistic batch of original tunes. “It conveys the aspect of moving across the country,” Minarik added. “Or overcoming past experiences and crossing into the next stages of modern adulthood.” And even though this freshly pressed EP was recorded earlier this year in a remote cabin in Rollinsville, Colorado – the production and arrangements throwback to the golden days of ‘60s American music – back when Buck Owens still ruled Bakersfield and Gram Parsons still had a chance. A full album is due in 2017! 500 copies only on orange/white swirl vinyl, comes with a DL card also!!!

Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie, the creative force behind A Winged Victory For The Sullen and Stars Of The Lid, is to officially release his score for the non-fiction film ‘Salero’ on November 11th. Having channelled some of the most iconic drift music of our time through A Winged Victory For The Sullen and Stars of the Lid, 2016 has already seen Erased Tapes luminary Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie provide original scores for a number of feature films including Jalil Lespert’s ‘Iris’ and ‘The Yellow Birds’ by Alexandre Moors. It’s on ‘Salero’ however, that we see Wiltzie weave some of his finest work and deliver an expertly distilled accompaniment to director Mike Plunkett’s sprawling, uncompromising visuals. Set in Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat, the narrative follows the region’s ‘Saleros’ – those who have for generations gathered salt and earned enough to somehow carve out an existence in such a barren landscape. It’s with the discovery of huge Lithium reserves – a mineral used frequently throughout the tech industry – under the scorched earth that acts as a catalyst for exploitation of the environment and its people; holding a microscope to the drastic effect industrialisation has on local culture and tradition. “I have always said that composing music is infinitely easier when you have beautiful images to be inspired by. It was a pleasure to write a score over this captivating place of endless, glimmering salt before its impending demise. I was fascinated by this mythical space and its ability to define the identities of the people who live in its vicinity, where this vast salt flat itself would be a central character” – Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie Recording took place in Adam’s Belgium-based studio for the guitars, percussion and small string ensemble tracking. Hungary was chosen for the final large string orchestra recordings at Magyar Radio Studio #22 with the Budapest Art Orchestra. The original motion picture soundtrack to ‘Salero’ will be available on CD, vinyl and digitally from November 11th via Erased Tapes.

DESTINY 3000 - 'S/T'

Formats
  • RIP047 - 7"
Details

Other than a very short run live cassette this is the first release from Sydney's most fab gals, Destiny 3000. D3000 injected a much needed energy into ol’ Sydney town, 5 girls that seemed to have a parallel universe of what’s cool and polarised some ideas of what’s what around these parts. They could be 4-guitars-n-drums or switch a guitar out for bass/synth, always instrument swapping, different set of songs every time you see them. Live they straddle the line between restlessly energetic and nervously adorable but evened out with a sense basement outsider cool. More in common with the murky mashing of psych/pop/punk that happened on the South Island of New Zealand (Look Blue Go Purple, The Clean, The Stones etc) than many claiming the Flying Nun throne. And while this certainly ain’t no 90s revival I could certainly see Destiny 3000 appealing to those who enjoy the sensibility of that wave of lo-fi independent rock: Strapping Fieldhands, pre-Matador Guided By Voices, V3, various Ron House groups etc…. for a more palatable 90s reference one song is titled The Real Kim Deal, in tribute to you know who. This 4 track 7” was recorded by Lincoln Brown (Housewives, Ghastly Spats) and captures the best bits of their live existence. The melody, the chaos, the fabulousness.

RUINED FORTUNE - 'BULLS EYE'

Formats
  • RIP027 - 7"
Details

Ruined Fortune - Bulls Eye 7”, hear the a-side in the link below. The b-side, Hope Diamond is driven by a guttural bass line with vocals that sound like a child in exorcism, musically fitting somewhere between Fang and The Go Go’s. Recorded by Owen Penglis, who was also “hired” to hit the skins. Bass/guitar/vox by Nic and Angie.

KITCHEN'S FLOOR - 'REGRETS'

Formats
  • RIP007 - 7"
Details

Originally released in 2010 in edition of 300 and selling out within a couple of months. Reissued (and I say reissued as we had to get new plates made) in July 2013 as it’s an important part of the KITCHEN’S FLOOR discography. Although some would argue that Still Night is one of the worst Kitchen’s Floor songs, the consensus at R.I.P HQ is that it’s one of the best. Here’s the mastermind of group MATT KENNEDY’s recollection of the recording… These 3 songs were recorded in an old dilapidated share house in Spring Hill, Brisbane. They were recorded by JORDAN SWEENEY (who would shortly afterwards do an excellent job recording the White Cop EP) on an old reel to reel tape thing. This was late 2009, not long after Loneliness is a Dirty Mattress had been released to massive success and I was finally able to make a living from selling photos and t-shirts of my house. Many people have commented on the complete lack of appreciable sound quality for this record. Some have told me that ‘Still Night’ is the worst song I have ever written. I don’t think it is my best either but I have written worse, ‘Insects’ for example. I am proud of this record, it is honest and is what it is. ‘Orbit’ and ‘Regrets’ were written from the heart, and these versions of them are raw as heck. Prominent in the mix is the sturdy bass playing of GLEN SCHENAU, and the impeccable drum work of JULIA NORRIS. That percussion pot never sounded finer than it does on this release. So go forth and listen! And hit me up if you want photos or t-shirts of my house. Australian import.

WHORES - 'MOB REALITY'

Formats
  • RIP026 - 7"
Details

“I wanted to come up with a heaps sick little blurb for the debut 7" by Sydney's WHORES but I spent the last week dealing with sewerage issues in house and getting sick due to these issues so my brain is dead. Something along the lines of.... they've consistently been one of the best, most intense live bands I've seen over the last few years.... they really sum up the often ugly, hostile atmosphere of Sydney.... although they don't really sound that much like Feedtime or Venom P Stinger, I reckon they're taking the same devolutionary path... Recorded by ANDREW “Cured Pink” MCLELLAN.... ‘brutal’ (do people still say that?).... something about sounding like a ‘Before the Quarrel’ era Cro-Mags sharing a practice space with the Electric Eels.... Excellent record, make thy purchase once available...” Australian import.
