Following on the heels of their latest release Battles, out on Division Records and distributed by Stickman Records in Europe, Norway’s Orango returns with another album of masterfully crafted rock. The Mules of Nana is the band’s sixth full length in a long career showing no signs of slowing down. The virtuoso trio of Trond Slåke, Helge Bredeli Kanck and Hallvard Gaardløs’ shines in 10 tracks of blues-tinged, folkey and soulful rock and roll with three part vocal harmonies that would bring a tear to the eye of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Orango’s confident brew of good ol’ southern rock, west coast style vocal harmonies and an amazing live energy, has been fine tuned with every album, peaking with the recording of their new album, The Mules Of Nana. The music was recorded purely out of internal inspiration; playing for the love of music in itself, and not compromising on their true affection for the genre’s influencers. The Mules of Nana is released on vinyl in gatefold sleeve , CD and digital.

WOODS - 'LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS'

Details

There are certain bands in this supersaturated, hyper-fragmented, temperamental internet era that rise above ephemeral popularity because they deserve it. Woods is one of those bands, and their wheelhouse is a decidedly mellow blend of “campfire folk,” psych, soul, and funk that’s wise beyond its years in timbre and lyric and takes influence from many a surprising source. Woods brings songs into the world that are at once comforting and challenging, and the band’s members take their job as music makers seriously, pumping out nine full-length studio records in the past 10 years and running their own label Woodsist out of Brooklyn. With over ten years and nine studio records under their belt, Woods joined us for a meditative masterclass of a live taping in our Nashville Blue Room this past May, performing to a packed house of loyal fans, happy to go on whatever journey the band had planned for them. (View photos from the show.) Frontman Jeremy Earl’s soul-quieting falsetto stylings are the center of Woods’ sound, in the studio and on this live record. But, the shamanic folk vibes of their earlier records gain an urgency and anxiety here, as they have on their newest release City Sun Eater In The River of Light, thanks to a horn section, African jazz influence, and the clear inspiration of the increasingly chaotic world in which we find ourselves living. The journey we all took with Woods at the helm on May 2nd, 2016 has been immortalized now as part of Third Man Records’ Live LP series, and it’s a journey we highly recommend taking in the comfort of your own home — with a glass of your favorite beverage in hand, fire roaring, and mind malleable.

APPLES IN STEREO - 'SCIENCE FAIRE'

Details

The Elephant 6 Collective’s family tree is beyond diverse. The first seed to take hold was E6-001, the 1993 self-titled EP (referred to by fans as the Tidal Wave EP) by The Apples in Stereo, then known simply as The Apples. It was recorded and produced on four-track cassette by Elephant 6 co-founder Robert Schneider, who would soon apply his genius to the records by Neutral Milk Hotel, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Minders, Beulah, and countless others in the E6 pantheon. In 1994, the renamed Apples In Stereo released a subsequent EP on the Bus Stop Label along with a peppering of seven-inch split singles before their first full length, Fun Trick Noisemaker, came out in 1995. The band has consistently stated that vinyl is the primary medium for, in the words of the Summer 1993 E6 catalog, their “dense chiming classic pop... soaked in fuzz.” Long out of print, Science Faire collects these earliest recordings as originally released, how meant to be heard: on seven-inch vinyl! Complete with posters, stickers and books, Science Faire has been lovingly reproduced. Each side stretches to the sonic limit with maximum music per side, just as with the originals. And as with the original 1996 pressing of this collection, there is never-before-seen artwork (for the “Time for Bed” single) from the early ’90s by Elephant 6 co-founder W. Cullen Hart of The Olivia Tremor Control. As a bonus, the track “Onto Something” is included here which wasn’t included on the original release.

MY CAT IS AN ALIEN / JEAN-MARC MONTERA - 'UNION OF THE SUPREME LIGHT'

Formats
  • H28 - LP
    655035302812
Details

Joining Maurizio and Roberto Opalio on their fourth album for Starlight Furniture Co., legendary French-Corsican guitarist and co-founder of Groupe de Recherche et d’Improvisation Musicales brings his noisy lyricism to three long tracks of oddly sensual and animalistic space howl. As their past collaborations attest, My Cat Is An Alien’s self-sustaining biosphere is an environment where the surreal dreamscapes of mavericks and eccentrics flourish. Jean-Marc Montera’s home-made guitar table, objects, and electronics forge metallic ribbons that twitch between the distant clangs of gigantic spores, while Maurizio (on home-made double-bodied string instrument and effects) and Roberto (on alientronics, effects, and modified electronic devices) set worms adrift in a zero-gravity aviary stocked with narcotized satsuma fowl. Roberto adds disorientation to the trio’s fog-blurred horizon with wordless vocalizations that could pass for billowing laments hooted by mutant sea mammals with enoki mushrooms growing on their larynxes. “Since the late 1990s My Cat Is An Alien have successfully renewed a commitment to psychedelia as a revealing factor of the soul. Brothers Roberto and Maurizio Opalio’s interest in John Cage’s thought and in free improvisation is hardly a secret; hence the attraction toward architectures based on the concept of instantaneous composition, created from extended practices. In March 2015, serendipity brought together My Cat Is An Alien and guitarist Jean-Marc Montera in Marseille, for a concert where complicity manifested itself immediately, thanks to simpatico affinities (Montera in France is a pioneer of non-idiomatic improvisation) and encounters (among which we will just mention Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo). The trio set out for the beyond, in search of the Harmony of the Spheres, as they have, again and again.” —Philippe Robert
