A Winged Victory For The Sullen, the otherworldly collaboration between Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie and Dustin O’Halloran, commence the New Year with their third full-length titled Iris – available worldwide via Erased Tapes on January 13th 2017. Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie and Dustin O'Halloran first met the director Jalil Lespert after he had discovered A Winged Victory For The Sullen on a music search online. After listening to their music, he immediately knew: "it was the sound of my new film". With an excellent cast of France’s finest actors Romain Duris, Charlotte Le Bon, and the director himself, plus a script filled with tension, sexuality and darkness, they knew there was a lot of musical territory to mine. It was agreed that they wanted to explore more analogue electronique experiments as well as working with a large string ensemble, to create something that felt very modern and still cinematic. “Despite A Winged Victory For The Sullen being associated with film score type music, trying to survive the process of creating the modern film score is not for people with fragile egos. It requires those who are the most responsive to change. The director and the film presented a new set of challenges, so we decided to stop thinking about cinema as an object, and moved closer to using the film’s images as triggers for experiences. The more we were able to let go, and see the music as something that happens, like a process – not a quality, the more we were able to reach a place that sounded like us. It was as if we were making our first record all over again, except being filtered through another language littered with dead metaphors”, the duo elaborate. The recording sessions began with their long time sound collaborator Francesco Donadello in the form of some modular synth sessions in Berlin. Dustin and Adam began working from the script in their own studios, and after filming commenced they continued to create music that could be used for first edits of the film – each day getting new scenes that triggered ideas that would become the base of the film score. Over the course of the next few months the two slowly crafted the music with weekly discussion from their studio to the editing room. The final sessions to what is now the score of Iris were recorded with a 40-piece string orchestra at Magyar Radio in Budapest. Upon label founder Robert Raths' request the over sixty minutes of material were then edited down to a concise album listen at forty-one minutes with a physical release set for January 13, 2017. The digital bonus track edition includes two solo pieces by Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie entitled The Endless Battle Of The Maudlin Ballade Part 2 and The Endless Battle Of The Maudlin Ballade Part 3, as well as tracks by Petite Noir, dOP, DJ Pone and The Shoes which feature in the film. The artwork was created by Berlin based illustrator Stephanie F. Scholz who also created the iconic cover for Nils Frahm's Music for The Motion Picture Victoria.

GOLDEN PELICANS - 'LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS'

Formats
  • TMR-390 - 7"
    813547023513
Details

Golden Pelicans happens to be one of the great rock ‘n’ roll bands to ever come out of Orlando, Florida. Ain’t no conspiracy whatsoever. Although, we must insist you see them live for max impact. This, however, will no doubt tide you over, with four songs striking a perfect balance between sloppy -party-punk and dive-bar-arena-rock. Solos that totally rip, drums like a beautiful drunk machine and gritty vox. Not to mention they exist at the center of the Total Punk Records / Florida’s Dying culture hub. Don’t talk yourself out of this one. Take a chance and sink your teeth into real rock minus the cheese.

CRAIG BROWN BAND - 'OVERTHINKING'

Formats
  • TMR-416 - 7"
    813547023599
Details

Craig Brown Band represents the closer-to-Canada, mostly Midwestern take on a sound that has long belonged to Nashville. Consider this the bastard child of Neil Young and Bob Seger. This is diet twang with a backbone. This is Northern Country. Craig Brown is a Detroit hero and the closest thing to a proper mayor the city has had in years. He’s one part blue collar and no parts ivory tower. He is a dude. He makes music. He is essential to the fabric of the scene. When he isn’t constantly touring with Terrible Twos, Liquor Store, King Tuff, or running the merch table for Natural Child, you can find him behind the counter at El Club or Lager House or just around. Go Pistons.

NOTS - 'LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS'

Formats
  • TMR-391 - 7"
    813547023490
Details

NOTS hails from the Goner Records enclave of Memphis, TN, all female post-punkers (with a no-wave tinge) that formed alongside the scene stalwarts Ex-Cult. The drums? Heavy but not heavy-handed. The vox? Booming and drastic. Acerbic yet memorable synth lines, implosive guitar, and, what is often the cornerstone of the genre, bass that is imaginative, thoughtful and indisputably cold.

WATCHER - 'LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS'

Formats
  • TMR-392 - 7"
    813547023476
Details

Watcher is a bawn ‘n’ bred Nashville, TN, blunt, post-rock menace with cutthroat precision. Riding on a wave of hard-to-find self-released cassettes, they were first introduced to the TMR family opening for Death From Above 1979 to a sold-out crowd. We invited them back shortly thereafter to open a bill with NOTS and Golden Pelicans on deck. They killed. What makes them so remarkable is the sheer power of their performance. It is always in the realm of life or death without turning existential angst against the audience. The riffs are stellar, the lyrics smart, the drumming insanely tight with three howling voices tying it all together.

MARC BARRECA - 'ABERRANT LENS'

Formats
  • PoL012017 - CD
    700261451343
Details

Marc Barreca’s seventh solo album for Palace of Lights extends his work with a broader and deeper palette of synthesized and sampled sound, including sources as diverse as prepared guitars, pianos, Indonesian metallophones and glass harmonica. The music of Aberrant Lens employs long MIDI delays, synced MIDI processing via MAX for Live and extreme warping of disparate looped sound sources driven into entirely new states. The results are new, coherent aural structures: music that questions traditional definitions of ambient and electronic forms. And, to the educated ear, within this search for innovation and experimentation Aberrant Lens reveals many of Barreca’s earliest influences. Even when integrated in thoroughly non-retro compositions, the hints of homage to Cluster and the first Fripp & Eno releases inhabit these twelve new settings. Marc Barreca has been creating and performing electronic music since the mid-1970s. His 1980 album, Twilight, was one of the earliest releases on Palace of Lights. His cassette-era album Music Works for Industry is being reissued by the RVNG spin-off Freedom To Spend, and his early cassette work is included in the upcoming VOD box set American Cassette Culture, which also features Marc’s early electronic music group Young Scientist. His work is included in the collection of The British Library.

OH BOLAND - 'SPILT MILK'

Formats
  • VOLAR49 - LP
    N/A
Details

The debut LP by the Irish garage-slop-punk-pop trio who’ve toured their home country with Parquet Courts and supported the likes of Metz, Sheer Mag, Protomartyr, Speedy Ortiz, and the Growlers. Formed in 2012, the trio of songwriter Niall Murphy (Guitars, Vocals) Eanna MacDonnchadha (bass) and Simon McDonagh (drums/vocals) came together to form Oh Boland over the course of drunken pub crawls in their small town of Tuam, Ireland. The band eventually recorded a couple of EPs with Brian Kelly of So Cow, and began venturing out into Galway City, leading to involvement with Dublin-based collective Popical Island and their release of the Delphi split LP with fellow Ireland indie-poppers Me and My Dog. The Delphi recordings brought them together with producer Mark Chester, who makes his own music as Ginnels and plays in No Monster Club. After the band realized they were sitting on a number of songs, they decided to go back in with Chester to record this first full-length, Spilt Milk, over the course of two days over Halloween weekend 2014 in a cottage in one of the most isolated parts of the west of Ireland, Carraroe. Most of the tracks were written in the town of Tuam while Murphy worked slow day shifts in a bar populated by agrarian tragedies, gambling addicts and mislaid bachelors. Boredom-fueled pop melodies driven by a love of girl group, country music and 70s power pop, enshrouded in the drunken slop of the Irish barroom rock n roll band and the unbridled motion of punk rock. Over the last few years, the band has had the honor of touring Ireland with Parquet Courts and playing with the likes of Sheer Mag, Protomartyr, Metz, Speedy Ortiz, the Growlers, the Sonics, and Paul Collins (the Nerves).

SUSAN - 'NEVER ENOUGH'

Formats
  • VOLAR48 - LP
Details

The debut album by Los Angeles trio SUSAN, Never Enough, follows their Just Call It EP released in September 2014 (also on Volar). Produced and recorded by SCOTT CORNISH and DREW FISCHER, Never Enough covers themes of personal independence and emotional confusion. Layered vocal harmonies, reverb-washed pop hooks, and a touch of apathy convey hesitation and personal conviction while making the point that even though they don't know where they are going, they are sure they will figure it out. Even if they have to rip it up and start all over again. Edition of 400 copies on black vinyl.

THE DACIOS - 'BEYOND THE BOTTOM HOUR'

Formats
  • HOMELESS30 - LP

Details

It's been 7 years since THE DACIOS gave us a modern miracle in the form of Monkey's Blood—an album of startling and wild rock 'n' roll honesty. The current line up sees the return of original member ROBERT "POPS" JOHNSON on drums, the introduction of noise guitar maestro BONNIE MERCER and the reunion of bass player MINDY MAPP, with BEAN and LINDA J, who formerly all played together in legendary Tasmanian outfit LITTLE UGLY GIRLS. Now The Dacios release their long awaited second album; Beyond The Bottom Hour—a ten-track art rock extravaganza. Limited edition of 400 copies with printed innersleeves and download. "The Dacios are heavy the way the MC5 were heavy—not just a raucous and groovy band that kicked jams, but a band that uses lyrics and riffs to scream and rant at the heavens, or to tear and claw at the soul."—Michael Stasiak (Best Tape Ever)

MEN WITH CHIPS - 'ATTENTION SPENT'

An agitated alliance of atonal string, wind and percussion. Thick and chunky with a Black Eye and Aberratn sauce.Adelaide’s insoluble MEN WITH CHIPS submit to scanners this battered platter. Sharp implements smothered in a dry-retch resonance, shoved into corrugated tubs. Like when Jim Barnes and Don Cherry went into the landscaping racket together but it didn’t work out. “Adelaide’s Men With Chips are part sunglasses-at-night scuzz rock smart arses, part no-wave art-punk de(con)structers.”—Repressed Records. Limited edition of 400 copies."Adelaide, AUS three-piece, no-wave art-punk scuzz-rock, hyphenated all to hell. sometimes it?s a free-jazz soiree, featuring atonal strings, wind and percussion (even a woodstove!), others it?s an angular aussie-rant. jangly, noisey, messy, a little something for everyone. reminds this loser of drunken-confidence, viewed from the sober-perspective." ?Adelaide?s MEN WITH CHIPS are part sunglasses-at-night scuzz rock smart arses, part no-wave art-punk de(con)structers. The extended number on side B Great Ape With Rib has a great Clear Spot era Captain Beefheart boogie going on.? ? Repressed Records ?Five song groinage from an Adelaide trio who wrap each other in bass strings as tight as possible before taking turns to lick side b of Tripod Jimmie?s A Long Walk Off A Short Pier. There may be some Aberrant/Black Eye precursors too, but you knew that already. The 10 minute improv closer ?Great Ape With Rib? clinches this as yet another essential slice from the City of Churches.? ? Fuckin Record Reviews

THE BLIND SHAKE - 'LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS'

Formats
  • TMR407 - 7"

Details

The Blind Shake represents the strengths of the Minneapolis music scene. Theirs is a sort of toxic post-rock with bursts of noise that speak directly to the proximity of Amphetamine Reptile Records. There are undertones of Devo, A-Frames, Thee Oh-Sees and more. The momentum here is impeccable and the cold North is no doubt alive with the sound of music. • Previous releases through Castle Face Records, Goner Records, Slovenly Records, Amphetamine Reptile Records. • Hometown: Minneapolis, MN

FRED & TOODY - 'LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS'

Formats
  • TMR408 - 7"
    813547024039
Details

Fred & Toody are two-thirds of the legendary rock ‘n’ roll band Dead Moon. These two are rock ‘n’ roll lifers: touring relentlessly, writing relentlessly, performing relentlessly and it’s clear that their bond to the music is as powerful and genuine as the bond they share with each other. No fake news, all fact on this front. Here we have a document of a stripped-down set with a bittersweet vacancy on the drums—Andrew Loomis having passed in early 2016—lending a strange atmosphere and energy to the performance. It may have been one of the most life-affi rming and heart-wrenching shows we’ve ever had in the Blue Room. • Fronted by Fred and Toody Cole (Dead Moon, The Rats, Pierced Arrows), legends and veterans of Portland’s independent rock scene. • Hometown: Portland, Oregon

ARCHIE & THE BUNKERS - 'LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS'

Formats
  • TMR404 - 7"
    813547023995
Details

Archie and The Bunkers hail from the birthplace of punk and a major rustbelt gem: Cleveland, Ohio. Self-described “hi-fi organ punk”, the band is two brothers still in high school - one on drums, the other on Farfi sa organ. Although newcomers to some extent, the results are electric and positively explosive, some say reminiscent of The Cramps, The Hentchmen, Billy Childish – every incarnation of top-notch rock you can imagine. It’s rare to take an organ and make it the centerpiece of a rock ‘n’ roll band and have it make so much sense. Clearly musicians to keep your eyes on for years to come. • Hi-fi organ punk from the depths of Dirty Water Records. • Hometown: Cleveland, OH
