**NR SHIPPING FOR 10TH MAR**All My Circles Run is the third full-length release by Montreal-based electro-acoustic composer Sarah Davachi and her second outing for Students of Decay. In a move which may surprise followers of her previous output, the five compositions on this record eschew synthesizer entirely, each focusing on a different instrument, including strings, voice, organ and piano. What remains consistent, however, is her striking attention to detail and a commitment to tonal possibilities that characterize all of her work. The sinewy “For Strings” opens the album, with keening overtones stretching out in all directions to form a massive, slow-moving, radiant sound. “For Voice” charts an even more celestial course, as wordless vocals ebb and flow to awe-inspiring effect. The stunning, melancholic “For Piano” closes the record and is a high watermark in Davachi’s oeuvre, with plaintive piano figures nestled atop a shimmering string drone to create a rich, reverent atmosphere. All My Circles Run is a step forward from an exciting artist whose compositional and aesthetic tendencies steer her steadfastly toward both the subjunctive and the sublime.

Oh my, what is this? The alien globule of Damaged Bug’s errant planet has circled the sun and is re-entering our orbit where last year’s Cold Hot Plumbs left off. Urgent falsetto morbidities detail this most rhythmically adventurous offering yet: Bunker Funk — syncopating lush landscapes with moon-shot death rays. Witness in horror the tractor beam pull of “Slay The Priest” — a breathless sprint through unfamiliar enemy territory — erratic laser beam synths dredge the lake, hard panned double drums resurrect dead heartbeats: load thy crossbow, friend, this night is long and we appear beset on all sides. The Bug is back and more hideous than ever — join us as we gawp at its iridescent shell, its alien mandibles… and the guts streaming from the wound.

JOHN ANDREWS & THE YAWNS - 'BAD POSTURE'

Formats
  • WOODSIST089 - LP
    655035048918
Details

Throughout years of traveling, John Andrews has documented his life with his home recordings. His first record, Bit By The Fang, found him living in the amish country of Lancaster, PA. On his latest record, Bad Posture, he waves farewell to Pennsylvania and greets the wooded hills of Barrington, NH. These songs were written slowly and quietly throughout the winter, usually late at night next to the wood stove. It was recorded in Andrews’ barn with the doors ajar, welcoming the springtime — inviting the outside noises in. You can hear the crickets chirping and the occasional truck driving by. The songs themselves lend their hand like slow backwoods Beatles demos covered in a thin blanket of tape hiss. Andrews’ band, The Yawns, has been crystallized with staples from the New England freak scene: Rachel Neveu and Lukas Goudreault (MMOSS / Soft Eyes) and Joey Schneider. The album was mixed with headphones at the foot of Emma Critchett’s grave, who lived in the Yawns’ house during the 1800s. The record is an ode to her and all who have lived there. It paints a picture of living in the “freecountry” on the precipice of a rapidly changing political climate.

Lone Piñon is an acoustic trio from New Mexico whose music celebrates their region’s cultural roots. Using violin, accordion, guitar, guitarrón, upright bass and harmony vocals in Spanish, English, and Nahuatl, the group has revived and updated the Chicano string band style that once flourished in New Mexico, bringing a devoted and explosive musicianship to Northern New Mexican polkas and chotes, virtuosic Mexican huapango and son calentano, and classic borderlands conjunto. The musical landscape of New Mexico, like its culture, is beautiful and complicated. Lone Piñon is the first of their generation of musicians to embrace the full scope of that complexity. Onstage, they cluster around a single microphone and play with a fiery intensity, moving seamlessly through several dozen of the dance forms that resonate in their home state. The result is a new sound, rooted in a deep respect for the past and undeniably alive. “Lone Piñon is easily the best band in New Mexico right now. They have tapped into an almost forgotten vein of rich Chicano folk music, learning from some of the great elders of the tradition like Antonia Apodaca and revitalizing the Southwestern string trio with a wonderful virtuosity.” —Jeremy Barnes (A Hawk And A Hacksaw, Neutral Milk Hotel, New Mexico native)

SILVER SHADOWS - 'COLD PLASTIC'

Formats
  • VOLAR51 - LP
Details

SILVER SHADOWS seem so-named because, since forming in 2013, they've illuminated and charged dark places—Oakland squats and warehouses, dim-lit San Francisco basements—with kinetic streaks of melody and beaming vocal harmonies. Cold Plastic, the group’s debut full-length, captures and vivifies the dark luster, fidgety propulsion, and circuitous melodies that distinguish Silver Shadows as a live band. Touchstones include the enveloping choral sensibility of Grass Widow, plus the texture and introspection of Pacific Northwest outfits such as Broken Water. 4AD flag bearers loom in the narcotic murk, though not much more than the homespun pop groups on Flying Nun. Which is to say, comparisons fall short. The choppy post-punk disjunct of “Crowned” and “Own the Night” abuts intermingling expanses of guitar and keyboard on “Fragile Dawn.” “Concrete miles” is frenetic and incisive. “What’s the Reason,” a simmering slow burn. The lyrics, delivered by three lead vocalists within the group, are fittingly allusive, embedding evocative imagery within sci-fi themes (among their influences is the writer Ursula K. LeGuin). The instrumentation is dense and saturated, glinting aurora-like at all times though not at the expense of melodic invention. Cold Plastic, recorded by EVAN HASHI and BRIAN TESTER at New Improved Recordings, follows an eponymous 12” EP released to warm reception in 2014 by Gilgongo Records.

ANGEL - '2017'

Formats
  • FARO01 - LP
Details

ADAM STONEHOUSE (ex-HOSPITALS) has finally released his follow up to Hospitals' Hairdryer Peace. His new band is called ANGEL. The album is called 2017. "...Like 300 years later Stonehouse has come out of nowhere again with another insane record. Sounding like field recordings of good hard rock when that still existed but without any 80's nostalgia. Not hiding behind any lo-fi production or hazy vocals. Don't worry, dude is still weird as fuck and has done a record that nobody else could do. Probably my favorite fucking rock record since the last one this guy did. Recorded with a full band (RACHEL BLOTZER) on drums and VINCENT ROSS on guitar) now and joined by SKATERS alum SPENCER CLARK and LAVENDER FLU guitarist CHRIS GUNN, this thing shreds. Fans of Hairdryer Peace will dig this but it's in a completely different direction... A fucked up party record for 2017."—Hicham Chadly (Cairo)
