THE HEADS - 'RELAXING WITH (RSD 2017 VERSION)'

Formats
  • ROOSTER15BV - LP
    5060446121429
Details

Vinyl of this reissue went out of stock within 6 months of its re-release in 2012,, so now, in the Month of its 21st Anniversary (it was indeed, released in the midst of Britplop in April 1996), the band have repressed it on blue vinyl for RSD. In an attempt to keep it in print and not see it go for £50+ on nefarious auctioneering sites. Fresh cut by Shawn Joseph, incredible art redux from Johnny O, and with MP3 DL code / FLAC DL code. "Relaxing With?" is the first Heads album, its reissue, remastered and boosted with extras has been a long time coming: Rooster is mightily proud to announce its release at last.. The Heads had self-released a couple of 7"', and then Cargo Uk's inhouse label Headhunter UK got to release a further 7", and then the Debut album in 1996. Amidst a world suffocating in Britpop smarm, the Heads cut a timely swathe with their unkempt rock psychedelique. The album contained 10 tracks of guitar driven, amp destroying rock, with cues taken straight from the US underground, Stooges, MC5, Mudhoney, Pussy Galore, early Monster Magnet too but with a disitinctly British stamp, some of the drone and fuzz from Loop / Spacemen 3, some of the attitude of the Fall, Pink Fairies and Walking Seeds and overlaid with the spaced rock of early Hawkwind. It was obvious that the four members of the Heads were music obsessives. The debut album was recorded at Foel studios (owned by Dave Anderson from Hawkwind) and engineered by Corin Dingley, it was mastered by John Dent at LOUD. For this reissue, the album was remastered by Shawn Joseph, Theres the full 2CD complement on the DL codes / this time theres a FLAC version too.. A release that confirms the Heads status as " a national treasure". Released on the band's own Rooster imprint, 1000 NUMBERED TRANSPARENT BLUE VINYL. Individually numbered 1-1000

VARIOUS - 'SHARON SIGNS TO CHERRY RED'

*SOLD OUT, ALL STOCK FULLY ALLOCATED* ONE OFF RSD 2017 PRESSING OF 700 COPIES / BLACK VINYL School Daze and RPM proudly present a compendium of the demo cassette generation from the early 1980’s, filtered through (principally British) independent women of the post-punk era. ‘Sharon Signs To Cherry Red’ began life as the archetypal independent single released on the obscure Lowther International label by archetypal independent act, The Kamikaze Pilots, the review of whom by Danny Kelly in the NME gives us the starting point: “Disturbingly, also from Norwich…comes this plaintive tribute to/assassination of all the earnest misery gobs ever signed to Cherry Red’s roster, with particular reference to the Tracey Thorn pantheon”. What was a gentle mocking of The Marine Girls et al is now the starting point for this meander through the 80s’ underground, a period which enabled more involvement from women in independent music, a slight, if not complete, freeing up of the male-dominated hegemony that had existed before punk. Many of these artists were night-time John Peel session regulars, fighting for daytime coverage in the press, walking the fine line of questioning from the NME (hip young gunslingers asking sexual politics) and Smash Hits (Milton Keynes readers asking which hairspray they used). ‘Sharon…’ is but an overview of a fertile time, when the democratization of music through punk had resulted in new viewpoints, talents and perspectives finding their voice. The breadth here is a joy: from the sugary Dorothy (originally on Throbbing Gristle’s Industrial Records) to ex-Dolly Mixture Debsey Wykes’s Coming Up Roses, from the punked scrawl of The Petticoats to the avant funk of Bristol’s Scream & Dance, the one thread all these groups have in common is their fierce independence. That and their XX chromosomes. Some of these recordings are surfacing for the first time on “Sharon Signs To Cherry Red,” while others are from rare 7”s and compilation releases. School Daze is a new imprint from the Glasgow-based Night School, focusing on discovering and sharing the past.

THE PIN GROUP - 'AMBIVALENCE'

Formats

Details

New Zealand’s Pin Group emerged out of the early ‘80s Christchurch scene and, with just two stunning singles and one brilliant five-song EP, have become an archetype for nearly all indie bands ever since. Ambivalence was not only The Pin Group’s hypnotic debut, but also the very first release on Flying Nun. While guitarist Roy Montgomery, bassist Ross Humphries and drummer Peter Stapleton build off each other’s jittery riffs, Montgomery’s uncanny baritone pierces the torrential clangor. Conjuring both Wire’s Chairs Missing and VU’s White Light/White Heat, the band captures a truly unique sound – evocative, yet austere. Wasting little time, The Pin Group released Coat in November 1981, merely two months after their first single. On the title track, Humphries’ distant vocals call out as tense rhythms gradually push listeners over the edge. B-side track “Jim” could easily have been recorded in Manchester circa 1979, but remains a master class in NZ post-punk atmospherics, menacing from start to finish. The Pin Group went back into the studio in January 1982 to record their third and final classic release. Featuring an expanded five-piece lineup with Mary Heney on guitar/ vocals and Peter Fryer on viola, Go To Town is a work of taut perfection. Showcasing the band’s dramatic chiaroscuro textures and arresting lyrics, “Long Night” and “When I Tell You” make staggeringly clear how much sonic ground The Pin Group covered in their unfortunately short tenure. These first-time standalone reissues, featuring Ronnie van Hout’s original sleeve designs, are pressed on limited edition color vinyl. The 12” includes liner notes by Liz Harris. Now is the time to discover again the monochrome magnetism of this unparalleled and legendary band. • First-time reissue of classic releases from legendary New Zealand band • Featuring singer/guitarist Roy Montgomery • Original copies go for high collector prices (IN THE £100s!!!) • 12” includes liner notes by Liz Harris • Limited edition colour vinyl

PURE HELL - 'WILD ONE / COURAGEOUS CAT'

Details

RSD 2017 - STILL AVAILABLE!!! In The Red and 2.13.61 are proud to announce this co-release for Record Store Day 2017! Pure Hell – The 1975 Acetate Side A - Wild One Side B - Courageous Cat Recorded at Magnagraphics Enterprise Studio NYC 1975 Kenny "Stinker" Gordon - Vocals + bass on Wild One Michael "Spider" Sanders - Percussion. Preston "Chipper" Morris - Guitars Lenny "Steal" Boles - Bass These tracks are two of six that were recorded in the session. The other titles are Pretty Poison, I'm Crawling, Rot in the Doghouse and Cosmic Love. The session was cut onto three two song acetates, in the A and B side order above. This single is the audio carefully transferred from the actual acetate, the only one we have been able to find so far. I have loved this band for nearly 40 years. The chance to team up with Kenny, Larry and Mike to bring this to you is beyond exciting. Long live Pure Hell. – Henry Rollins At the time we were unaware that a whole new trend to be coined 'Punk Rock' would evolve as it did. I'm amazed that this acetate resurfaced after being lost along with the other two, and that Henry, and Larry at In The Red Records would be the ones to illuminate it in the 21st century! - Kenny Gordon
