Preceding her epic new record Imaginations, due May 29th, Single features two exclusive new songs not available on any other release. Molly Nilsson is in a mood: the mood for love, perhaps? For an artist who has spent almost 10 years skirting the issue of love, almost addressing it, taking it out to dinner only to stand it up, “Single” almost lands a sucker love-punch to the listener’s heart. About Somebody seems to be about somebody, or maybe even somebody’s body, about desire too, perhaps. How else to interpret the line “Babe I want to party with you every night, and have a hard-on for the rest of my life?” But this is a Molly Nilsson song, and this is Empowering Content. Over a rousing, even anthemic, verse/chorus one-two, a soaring synth-string hook that rides the handclaps beautifully, we‘re soon left wondering whether our beloved narrator is really focusing on the “other” at all. Love lets you down: treat it mean, keep it keen, and remember if you can’t love yourself how the hell are you gonna love any body else? On the flip, Quit (In Time), is a classic minor-key Nilsson elegy to obsession and addiction, sounding almost close to an early 80s Springsteen love-story. Here we imagine Nilsson at the piano, her heart a resounding bell for all longing. If About Somebody is the tumultuous onset of an affair, here we’re hopelessly drawn to the flame, unable to leave alone that which causes the sweetest pain. It’s a universal theme, the longing for something we shouldn’t have, and Nilsson seems to elucidate the feeling with a precise, razor-sharp lyrical nous that fans will instantly recognize. “Single” is about the self and the other; about navigating the love of others that tries to trip us up. But it’s also about you. “Single” is because you’re worth it.

TODD ALBRIGHT - 'DETROIT TWELVE STRING BLUES AND RAG'

Details

Todd Albright is a Country Blues, finger-style 12-string guitar player and singer living in Detroit, Michigan. An evening’s sonic evocations of pre-WWII Blues covers an extensive selection of material recorded in the 1920’s and 30’s. Playing the 12 string guitar, Todd brings to life an era composed of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Sylvester Weaver, Blind Willie McTell and Leadbelly, among others. Todd’s history playing the Blues reaches over 25 years, though he does not remember a time that a guitar wasn’t in his hands. He first heard the Country Blues at the age of twelve, thanks to a gifted John Lee Hooker record from his sister. The experience was a profound one—the Blues felt right, and he immediately became a self-taught student of the genre aiming solely to interpret the sounds of the masters. Todd has performed across the U.S, both as a solo musician and alongside his former country blues string band band, The Staving Chain. Throughout the years, Todd has enjoyed sharing the stage with notable musicians and friends such as Dakota Dave Hull, Roy Book Binder, Charlie Parr, and Paul Geremia.

Aaron Lee Tasjan is a songwriter first and foremost whose typical sound is a massive, cosmic country bottled into a potent concentrate. Lilly Hiatt, an East Nashville rabble-rouser, finds the sweet spot between melancholy and peace with no shortage of bite. Together, their music crafts a sort of dance, a stomping swing led equally from both sides of a locked gaze. Rayland Baxter’s music is at once otherworldly and down to earth, steeped in singer/songwriters such as Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. Sarah Jarosz is a 2017 Grammy Award-winning artist for Best Folk Album joined here by Parker Millsap, an Oklahoma native whose star is now rising brightly in Nashville. Their collaboration, including a cover of “The Glory of Love” made famous by R&B crooners, The Five Keys, is smart and harmonious. Also worth noting is the bare bones drum machine and laid-back acoustic guitar, with the spotlight on nuanced vocal interlacing. This one’s for the books.
