POWER - 'LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS'

Formats
  • TMR405 - 7"

Details

Power is the import from the punk-rich city of Melbourne, Australia, where some of our favorite music has been birthed this decade, with a strong emphasis on punk, garage rock, and unique amalgamations of “alternative music”. For the uneducated and uninitiated, Power’s music most notably employs volume and velocity, taking strong cues from seismic Aussie proto-punk from the ‘70s. Both sides of the Serpent City/Road Dog single begin exactly how you’d want - a squeal of amp feedback fading into bangover riffage. A more anthemic shitstorm does not exist.

The Terminals are the best rock band New Zealand has ever produced. Period. There’s heavy competition, but believe it. No group has lasted over three decades and maintained such intensity, structure and mood better than the core team of Steven Cogle and Peter Stapleton. Cogle’s voice is a quavering incantation of deep spell-casting, throwing more dirt onto already gritty guitar squalls. Stapleton’s rhythm section propels songs through lightning charges of tempo and energy. Age has only embedded the band’s mastery of deep sonic realms. The ten years between their last album, Last Days of the Sun, and the release of Antiseptic whip by in a flash when these records are played next to each other—they never disappoint, they never relent. This latest album does mark some changes, however. Longtime guitarist Brian Crook now lives in the California desert, so Nicole Moffat has replaced him, providing violin and vocals. Mick El Borado thickens the atmosphere with his improvisational keyboard playing. A group that has stayed together so long knows instinctively where a song can go, although it is often the maverick pieces—ones that at first don’t seem to belong—that end up on the records. Their work together has become only more sagacious, and The Terminals don’t waste an intended or improvised note. This is a peerless rock album—think of another group who’ve stayed as heavy, as broke, and consistent for this long.

The third thug rock masterpiece from these Orlando miscreants lays waste to the land with gruff voice and loud, raw guitar backed by in-pocket bass and drums. As of late, their boot-stomp beat has been ringing true across the land—born of Slade and AC/DC, Rose Tattoo and Coloured Balls, it’s the sound shared by punkers Slaughter And The Dogs and modern acts such as Melbourne’s Power. Golden Pelicans blends this blast with only the strongest essences of punk, hardcore, and metal on Disciples Of Blood, their latest album. Guitar attack has been given more space to do its damage, and the band moves into a new, even more aggressive direction. Check out the cover, once again by Mac Blackout— this time the mayhem has been taken from black and white into full-color carnage. Just as their live shows are guaranteed ceiling-breakers, this album rages from note one to note last, perfect to accompany late-night speeding through residential back alleys, smashing bottles and crashing into trash cans. “Break the cosmos, with your mind!” seems an appropriate and possible goal when screamed at you by vocalist Erik Grincewicz. And remember... it ain’t psychedelic until you kill someone, and this record is psychedelic as hell.

“Wisdom comes with age, so it’s no surprise that Woods have grown more sage in the twelve years since they formed, expanding from sylvan drum circles into increasingly elaborate, transcendent psychedelia.” —Pitchfork “We walked down streets and crammed onto trains, our faces masks of fear. Unsure how to react, we, collectively, did not react. We grieved for a country and an ideal we never thought would die. We grieved for a loss of certainty. We argued about what we thought would happen. We preached understanding. We advocated for anger. Some people said that we’d at least get some incredible art, other people said that was a small view of a world we were quickly realizing we’d misunderstood. Everyone was right. Everyone was wrong. Art made in precarious times matters as much as we let it matter. But what are we looking for from the art we enjoy? Escapism? A reckoning with harsh reality? A temporary shared hallucination? Music can heal because it presents the pain of being human as universal. Love Is Love was written and recorded in the two months immediately following the election, but it’s not a record borne entirely of angry, knee-jerk reaction to what America is becoming. Instead, it’s a meditation on love, and on what life means now. Taking cues from last year’s City Sun Eater In The River Of Light, it feels very much like a record made from living, shoulder to shoulder, in a major city: weaving psychedelic swirls of guitar between languid horns reminiscent of the best Ethiopian jazz—Love is Love is a distinctly New York record. It is a document of protest in uncertain times and an open-hearted rejection of cynicism in favor of emotional honesty. It is bright, and then, unexpectedly, a little dark sometimes too. There will be parts of life where we will watch as events unfold and we will feel helpless. We will not be sure of the future. On good days, we’ll have each other. On the bad ones, we’ll turn to the art that helps us feel something. Love is Love is a document of the new world we live in, proof that light can come from despair and hope is still possible. We just need a little help remembering it exists.” —Sam Hockley-Smith

Since the release of her sophomore album Life On Earth, Seattle-based musician Jesy Fortino has become a civil engineer. While studying at University of Washington to pursue a wholly new life direction, she wrote and recorded Tiny Viper’s Laughter. Although it seems like a deviation from the singer-songwriter albums Fortino released on Sub Pop, it continues early works such as Empire Prism, and later instrumentals such as her 2015 contribution to the Ambience series (Box Bedroom Rebels) and her collaborations with Rafael Anton Irisarri and Liz Harris (Mirrorring / Grouper). Though previous works like Hands Across the Void and Life On Earth are collections of songs, just underneath their façade simmers a raw emotional expression that goes beyond words. Laughter is the result of experiments deconstructing pop tropes. Fortino takes inspiration from early electronic pioneers like Florian Fricke of Popol Vuh, as well as the raw experimentation of ’80s proto-industrial tape culture. Additionally, she carries the seemingly disparate influences of Slava Tsukerman’s Liquid Sky soundtrack and Meredith Monk’s exercise in turning the human voice into a spectral instrument. The apprehension that comes along with attempting something new and challenging is captured in the fragile structure of these compositions, which threaten to fall apart almost as soon as they come together. NEIL MICHAEL HEGARTY & THE HOWLING HEX - 'LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS'

Formats
  • TMR406 - 7"

Details

Neil Michael Hagerty is best known as the laconic frontman of 90s noiseforward rockers Royal Trux. Back in September of 2016, NMH and The Howling Hex showcased an off-kilter garage stomp fused with avant-blues aggression. The two songs presented here are the surest insight into the mind of someone who helped redefi ne rock ‘n’ roll by completely destroying it, but has since settled into more cogent outbursts. • Hometown: Washington DC / Denver, CO • Recorded September 23, 2016 in Third Man’s Blue Room
